Title: The Iron Trooper Medal as Awarded to the Brigade Champion
Post by: Major Matt Lewis on October 06, 2008, 08:43:27 PM
Ladies and Gentlemen,

After almost two years of working with Steffan, we were finally able to come up with a winner for the Iron Trooper.  This medal is cast out of Silver and is down right beautiful.  There is only one awarded per year and there is a criteria that states it may not be awarded at all if the criteria is not met.  In the history of GAF, there have only been 6 Iron Trooper Medals Awarded.

2004 - Colonel Diamond
2005 - Shoot n Newton
2006 - Major Matt Lewis
2007 - Pitsptr
2008 - Rattlesnake Jack
2009 - Sgt. Drydock
2010 - Col. Drydock ****Congratulations to our first double Champion****
2011- Col. Pitspitr
2012 - Col. Drydock ****Congratulations to our first triple Champion****
2013 - Rattlesnake Jack
2014 - Ned Neiderlander

This is the most challenging prize in all of Cowboy Action Shooting.  Not only must you be quick with the steel, you also have to hit targets farther and more difficulty placed.  You must also know and understand your personification and outfit yourself accordingly.

Major Matt
Here are some better photos of the Iron Trooper. They look better on solid Blue than on striped red and orange.

And winning this year was no walk in the park. The competition level of shooting in the battle rifle classes was up due to increased participation in those classes. And the uniforms there were something to be hold.

I'm glad I won mine when I did. I'm not sure I'll ever be good enough to win again.

Jerry, I'm prouder of this match than any in the 20 years of Action shooting I've done.  I've never had more fun and yet been pushed harder.  In the end it was not speed, but tactical decisions (and not a little luck) which enabled a squeaker of a win in class.  In a military based shooting match, is there any better conclusion that that?  Frankly, I thought I was shooting for 2nd place.  Coupled with a Uniform I've worked years on, it was a run I'll always look back on with pride.

Not to mention watching Texas Sarge work that Trapdoor, or Kate cleaning her stages, knowing they could rack up just as many points as you, not a thing you can do but shoot your own class.

All the more special, because, yep, I may never be able to do it again.

Sorry, everyone - I got my mental USB ports switched.  Congrats to DRYDOCK, then, and, well, maybe next year for you Dusty.

Lt Col Drydock,

I'm a bit late having just returned from an extended tour of the Arizona Territory but lt me also add my congratulations to your achievement.  It was a true pleasure to watch you shoot your Krag and both your field and dress uniforms were outstanding.

I sorta thought it was an Artillery uniform with the red piping. I sent you a PM concerning my latest "find".  I hope to have the Krag in my hands this week. I was able to find 2 boxes of factory ammo for it.
