Title: 2008 GAF Grand Muster Photos
Post by: Pitspitr on October 06, 2008, 10:48:35 AM
I'm going to start a thread with pictures of the Muster. I hope anyone else with good photos will share some of them here. I pretty much only got pictures on Friday.

Our Department Commander at the Ball Friday in his interpretation as a local Buffler hunter and scout, "Little Buckshot" Conrad Wentworth. "Scruffy Skippy" seated on right.

"Windy City Joe", "Curly LaGrande", "Cherry Lake Jake", "Cherry Lake Kate"

"Bow View Haymaker", "Shalako Al", "Major Matt Lewis" timing "Cherry Lake Kate", "Scooter" on the far right, and a gentleman I did not catch the name. Which I regret because he was great to shoot with and even politely laughed at my jokes.

"Dusty Tagalong" demonstrating how to tickle with a pitchfork.

Steffan and family also prepared and served lunch Saturday. Thanks, Dad, for the rabbit ears. :D

The Enlisted Men's Barracks where we all stayed. I have a lot of interior shots of the Barracks, but unfortunately there seem to be a lot of old men in their underwear standing about, so I will forgo printing them. Others I will have to do some doctoring because the light level was very low and they are very dark.

"Rattlesnake Jack" in action with his .577 Martini-Henry.

"Dusty Tagalong" and "Megan O'Ruckus". "Guns Garrett"'s campaign hat is seen behind his lovely bride's head. Wish I had checked the shot and shifted everyone.

The infamous bonus rifle target from the hill. Look for the faint red target at the base of the tree line above the left shoulder rank bar on "Curly"'s buckskin coat.

Looks like I have the honor to post the first photos of the new "Iron Trooper Medal" that the Brigade Champion earns. They are solid silver including the clasp. Rattlesnake Jack took home the 2008 medal.

The white ribboned medal is a GAF 3rd Place finish in a Muster Event and the Red and White one is for an NCOWS Nationals placing I believe.

Title: Re: 2009 GAF Grand Muster Photos
Post by: River City John on October 06, 2008, 09:22:48 PM
The NCOWS medal was chosen to replace another GAF medal won- I believe, awarded the second Muster. Those were the medals that were practically dinner plate size, if you remember. They just do not look right on a uniform, so as the Muster was conducted under NCOWS rules in the beginning it was an appropriate substitution.

Slim, I wish you could have been up there with us. It was a long drive for me. I thought about not going because of the pain in my shoulder from the shingles. Then I thought I might not get another chance to go. Now that I'm an Ol' retired Cop, my schedule is pretty flexible now. I just backed my ears and went for it. I was goin' to spend the night in Kansas and then drive in the second day. I could not lock the bed cover on my truck so I just kept drivin. I got out to the turnoff about 0300. I slept in the truck till 0500. I went back to Ord and went through the drive through at Micky Dee's. I got a big Coffee and a sausage bisquit. I went back out to the Fort and unloaded the truck. Texas Sarge and Scooter(the other two Texans) were the only ones in the Barracks. Del got there Thurday afternoon. Everyone got there Thrusday night and Friday morning. Stayin' in the Barracks was a Blast. I didn't suffer any withdrawl from lack of Laptop or TV. We could use a good Shower area out there.

AND A GREAT TIME WAS HAD BY ALL!!!

Weather was wonderful, fellow shooters were polite, helpful and down-right fine Ladies and Gentleman. It has been quite a few years since I have seen such enjoyable fotos, food and fellowship (not to mention Stephan's home-built WW I  courrier's motor
cycle).  Steelhorse,  start planning right now for next year as I am sure we can get you from western IL. on to Nebrasky.

The greatest surprise was gas in KC at $2.84(only saw this at one station) and $3.05 in Grand Island and then to get home to $2.76 in Carthage.

Just one word to the wise for all you future Muster shooters: After shooting a longrange match, be sure to reset you sights before going on the a regular stage. It helps on the hit/miss ratio (or should that be miss/hit ratio?). Anyways, check your equipment before an engagement.

Will also ask Bro Bob to post pics from his camera to this site.  DID YOU SEE THAT BOB?

Greetings All:

I have just reached home, having traveled via Cheyenne, Wyoming and Butte, Montana (over-nighting in both of those locations).

I am too beat at the moment to post any pictures, but certainly wish to add my sincere congratulations and heartfelt thanks to Col. Pitspitr for a very well-run and exceptionally enjoyable Muster!

I am honoured and humbled to have been awarded the Iron Trooper award, and am also particularly pleased that my performance managed to secure the Divisional trophy for the Division of Canada, Department of the International ....

Pictures to be posted on the morrow, hopefully!

Jack, I enjoyed meeting you at the Muster. I like the Black Watch trousers. I have been told that members of my Clan, Clan Robertson were well represented in the Black Watch.  My Congrats. on winning the Iron Trooper Award. I was the one that asked about a Police Glengary.  I'm glad you made it back to Alberta safe and sound. I come to Calgary to the Rodeo every so often.

Wow - what awesome pics from an outstanding shoot!!!

I love the barracks pic too - that and the pics of the food and nightime lighting just adds that extra piece to this shoot that others do not have.

Who goes to these from the east coast?

Anyone from the NorVA/MD crowd who might like to plan a road trip next year?

YES!!! Please start planning for next year as we need some fresh blood on the firing line ( no pun intended, especially after being hit 6-7 times with lead splatter and shot).  Some candidates from the DelMarVa area would be appreciated. Looking forward to seeing the General next year. He will fall in love with Fort Hartsuff. Just to think of sleeping in the same bunk as an 1880s soldier was enough to keep me awake the first night (that and Delmonico's Turkish coffee).

Col. Pitsptr, I shall endeavor to follow your suggestion and come up with a Lt. Col. dress uniform  but after much thought, it may be that of a Staff Chaplain.  Do you have any suggestions as to where I can research such a uniform?

The stars at 4:00 AM at Fort Hartsuff are every bit as beautiful as at Garnett, KS or here at home in Carthage, MO. The Lord's creation looks great no matter where you view it from.

Gripmaker - the Quartermaster Shop has a Civil War era chaplain uniform.

It looks pretty nice - hope they had a summer time uniform or relaxed allowances for the heat.

YES!!! Please start planning for next year as we need some fresh blood on the firing line ( no pun intended, especially after being hit 6-7 times with lead splatter and shot).

Col. Pitsptr, I shall endeavor to follow your suggestion and come up with a Lt. Col. dress uniform  but after much thought, it may be that of a Staff Chaplain.  Do you have any suggestions as to where I can research such a uniform?

:o YOU GOT HIT WITH THAT MUCH SPLASH!?  :o I thought as far away as I had most of the targets nobody would have to worry about splash. At least we can rest assured that the splash wasn't from a Kansas Marine. Their bullets had a hard time just getting to the target.  ;D

I don't consider myself an expert on officers uniforms by any means, but since they were private purchased you should have a little more latitude. Probably the first place I would check is with St. George. Army Blue and More Army Blue are pretty good books on uniforms.

To reduce splachback from the targets, you might try to angle them down abit more than they were.  I didn'tlook at your stands real close soI don't knowhoweasy that will be.  I think alot ofthe splash was going off to the sides  and could still travle a god ways instead of being difected down into the dirt in front of the tarets.
We've had very little problem withour targets that are angled down/ forward but the ones we have that are more straight tend to have more lead coming backat us on ocasion.
Just some personal observations.  your results may vary.
a great shoot alltogether.  I'm looking forward to more pictures.

Col. Pitsptr,  Yep,  I sure did get hit that many times but mostly when the foragers were shooting shotguns against bowling pins. Apparently the surface sealant was "holding" the shot just long enough that when the pins spun on the ground, the shot was "flung" (MO word) in all directions. Had a few red spots on my tummy when I got back to the wife in Ioway. Her remarks were not those that would elicit joy in the heart of the walking wounded (nor were the snickers appreciated). I noticed that River City John must have taken a hit as he had a blood spot between his eyes after Sat. stages.

Was researching Chaplain uniforms today and found that they were basically the same from 1861-1880 and that, although not really military personnel, Chaplains were paid at the rank of Cavalry Captain. Some apparently took acception to this as they joined the regular service and one rose to the rank of Major General. Bad enough to drop from CSA Brigadier to US Lt. Col. but then to drop even further to US Capt.

Yep...and put me to the ground with one of the ladies making enough noise to gather a crowd.  It must be paybacks for military
time. Never shot at once as even the NVA, KR and CNA like to know locations before unloading SAF or Arty. Absolute concealment  is 90% of coming home in the LRPC game.

Victory is not about dieing for your country. It is about making the enemy die for his...and in great numbers.

Military did not award Purple Hearts in our era. The badge that was displayed was called a scar.

Besides, if getting hit with splatter warrants recognition, might as well just automatically pass it out to everyone. :D

Larry,

I haven't pulled our my post-CW regs, but a quick bit of research on chaplain's uniforms of the War of Unpleasantness revealed that Confederate chaplains had no regulation uniform.  A chaplain of the 4th Texas was observed in September 1861 wearing a single-breasted military style black frock coat with brass buttons and black trousers.  The coat had an "olive branch" in green braid on the cuffs.  No other ornamentation.   Union chaplains also wore a plain black frock coat (civilian or military style) with plain black buttons and black trousers.  However, some wore uniforms of their own design to include shoulder straps and even swords (one chaplain was killed by a Confederate who thought he was a combatant because of his sword).

Secondly, I wouldn't worry overmuch what rank you wear (or don't wear).  I have several uniforms in various ranks from 1st Lt through Brig Gen - some for shooting and some for fancy affairs.  I've been hankering after an NCO of light artillery uniform mostly because I like the look of the red on the blue (and also because I was once a sergeant and I've served with the artillery - though not at the same time).  This is a hobby, so enjoy yourself.

Sir: I totally concur that this is a hobby and I shall continue to thoroughly enjoy every bit of it. However, since ministry has been my main occupation for more than 34 years, I want to make the best of it. Have even entertained the thought of volounteering for the position of Cheif of Chaplains for GAF and am interested in any other ministers who would be willing to join the ranks.
Your thoughts on this proposal would be greatly appreciated.

Gripmaker,

I can't speak for GAF or it's members but I thnk having a chief of Chaplians is a great idea not just for GAF but for Cowboy Action Shoting in general.  And I will add that after getting a chance to meet you in person at the muster yb\ou would be the right person for the job, though it does seam that your a man of many talants.

Around hear and I think in most parts of the country the Cowboy Action events take place on Sunday and many of us miss out on our regular churchin' because of it.
For myself, I feel closest to our creator when outside in all that he created and enjoying our freadoms with good friends, but a bit of the gospel and it's meassage to go with all that would be nice to ad.

Especially at multi day events it would be nice for a match dirrector to know who theymight be able to ask to give a short blessing to the event or even a short service before saftey meetings and such.

I wnated to offer somthing on the Sunday morning of a recend 2-day we had but felt out of my element to lead.
A list or directory or even those in your profession making themselves known if they would be willing to the match directors would be a great idea and might serve to remind us all just how blessed we are.

Again,
Just some of my random thoughts

God Bless and shoot safe, Y'all.

Texas Sarge:

Sounds like you may be trying to attach the image as it came off your camera (.... which could be as much as a megabyte or more in file size - i.e. far over the maximum 150 kilobytes allowed here ....)

You should have some sort of image editing software on your computer - including something that came with the original software package, quite likely, as well as whatever software came with your camera that has allowed you to download the image to your computer.  They all differ somewhat, at least in the names they assign to different functions - but you should be able to locate a "size" or "re-size" command (or some similar term.)  When working with that particular image, it should tell you what size the image presently is, and then give you options to re-size it.  Ideally, this will be expressed both in terms of dimensions (i.e. so many inches, centimeters or pixels in width and height) and also file size (i.e. so many kilobytes).  Using the latter, you should be able to re-size the image to no more than 150 kilobytes (or whatever other size you want) for posting on the internet.

NOTE:  do not just "save" this re-sized image, since that will likely replace your original image in memory with the much lower quality and resolution  image you have just created.  Rather, use the "save as" function instead, to save the new image file under a different name - I often use the existing name, with a "sm" (for "small") or "low res", or some other such supplement added to the end .... that way, if you have saved the new image to the same file folder as the original, they should appear together on the list of folder contents.   Keeping the original image file as downloaded from your camera isn't necessary,  but if you ever want to get a print made from that photo, or print it yourself, it is that original high resolution image you'll want to do it from.   The new low res image you have created will be just fine for posting on the internet, since most computer monitors only display a fairly low resolution image anyway, and any excess resolution is wasted in that application.

(If all else fails, e-mail the image to me, and I can re-size it and post it for you .....  However, you'll likely want to try to familiarize yourself with the process and learn to do it yourself, of course.)

Edit:  Oops!  Guess I ought to have looked at the subsequent posts before responding!  ::)

Tasted rattlesnake once, though can't say the experience was truly representative .....  This was years ago at a Black Powder Rendezvous held at Fort Assiniboia, just outside Havre, Montana.   Two rattlers were dispatched right within camp, and some fellow shooters from Medicine Hat decided to cook 'em up.   After skinning and gutting they were sectioned, battered, and fried.  In view of the fact that a snake is basically all ribcage, it was rather like picking the meat off a chicken neck ....  They fried it up in some oil/grease previously used to cook fish for lunch, which likely explains why the taste seemed quite "fishy" to me.
:P

The sign upon the cafe wall said OYSTERS Fifty Cents
"How Quaint" the blue eyed sweetheat said with some bewidermence.
"I didn't know you had such fare out here upon the plain."
"Oh sure" her cowboy date replied, "We're really quite urbane."

"I would guess the're Cheaapeake or Blue Point don't you think."
No maam they're mostly Herford cross...and usually they're pink.
But I've been so cold myself, what you say could be true
And if a man looked close enough their points could sure be blue.

She said, "I gather them myself out on the bay alone,
I pluck them from the murky depths and smash them with a stone!"
The cowboy winched, imagining a calf a calf with her beneath,
"Me I use a pocket knife and yank' em with my teeth."

"Oh my," she said, "You animal, how crude and unrefined.
Your masculine assertiveness sends shivers up my spine!
But I prefer a butcher knife too dull to really cut.
I wedge it in on either side and crack it like a nut."

I pry them out, if they resist, sometimes I use the pliers,
Or even Grandpa's pruning shears if that is what it requires.
The hair stood on the cowboy's neck, his stomach did a whirl.
He'd never heard such grisly talk, especially from a girl.

"I like them fresh," the sweetheart said and laid her menu down
Then ordered oysters for them both when the waiter came around.
The cowboy smiled gamley, though her words stuck in his craw
But he finally fainted dead away when she said, "I'll have mine raw!"

                                                         Baxter Black

Now Leo, I hope you know who Bax is with out googlin' if not it could go hard on ya. ::)

I sure like his (BB's) words, but y'all can have MY oysters ... or snake ... or camp dog/cat ... or ... well, you get the idea.
;)
I admit to bein' a city boy ... but I'm tryin' to improve ...

By the way ....

Back a few pages ago I commented on Cpt. Little and him (apparently) shooting a target about 5 or 6 ft. in front of him.  Turns out you were shootin' downhill.  That's all fine and good, but I like it better that way the picture shows!  It's funnier that way!  The explanation of shooting downhill is MUCH more boring than him shooting a rifle at a target a few feet away.  From the photo angle, it isn't readily apparent that it is on the edge of a downhill slope.

I guess ya had ta be there.

And I wish I was ...

OK, I have gave this some thought, if we can get some "oysters" for the next muster, I need to make some soup for the same meal, could do a tribute to the Vaquero (Not not the Ruger one) and do menudo. ;D

And why do we need soup someone might ask,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,wel look at my sig, the one line is Latin, it's a sayin' as Gus would say. ;D

Can be translated several ways, but the one I like is "everything from soup to nu,,,,,,,,,,,," er never mind. ::)

But I'm goin' on record here:  I don't want to be on River City John's "deep doo-doo" list - or any others, so I'm already workin' out details.

Maybe...
According to the Peanut Institute the peanut plant is thought to have originated in Brazil or Peru. Portuguese explorers transplanted it to Africa, and from there it was brought to America as an inexpensive, high-protein staple, later to be consumed by soldiers during the Civil War.  Many pre-Columbian cultures such as the Moche, depicted peanuts in their art. Evidence demonstrates that peanuts were domesticated in prehistoric times in Peru. Archeologists have thus far dated the oldest specimens to about 7,600 years before the present

Peanuts are grown mainly in eight states: Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma and Texas.

Got busy with a customer and cut it short.  Have not seen any referance to it on the Northern Plains.  Perhaps among some of the Black homesteaders, but of course the peanuts would have to have been brought in, so most likey for a treat rather than more steady like down south.

But I don't like peanut soup, how about we spit the differance, use Legumes and make split pea and ham. ;D

(No offense meant, pards!  I had the extreme pleasure of attending M1A1 Tank Master Gunner School with 4 of our Brother Marines.  It's an Army school that a "few of the best" get sent to, because the Corps doesn't have a big enough program needed to field their own school.  They were sharp. And fun.)

Real salt water oysters were a common item shipped in all over the west.  They were considered more of a delicacy than they are today.  Besides the calf fries which are 'spossed to taste like oysters, often Salsfy often called oyster plant were used as a subsitute when the real thing was not availible.

I am rather loathe to disrupt the current culinary discussion ..... ;)

However, I finally received copies of the pictures taken my "batman", Roger, and thought I'd post a few of them .....

(Turns out he was waiting to give them to me on a CD for my birthday.   Also, he obviously took very much to heart my comments about not having very many pictures of me actually shooting at past Musters ..... although it may not look like it, I've actually had to eliminate most such pictures from this selection!   ::)  )
