Let's do another RATS poll. ;D
Which calibers do ya shoot for your main match guns?
The poll system is supposed to let ya vote more than once if you shoot multiple calibers. Let's check it out!
Reckon I'll start--I got .44 K-Bisley Vaqueros in .44.

I have two 7.5" .44's for main matches.

MG:
I suppose it might overcomplicate the poll, but it would be kind of interesting to know if those calibers were shot in smokeless or BP.
Good Shooting,
Count Sandor
-
Count:
That is not a bad idee! ;D
I'LL PONDER OVER HOW TO WORD IT & IMPLEMENT IT.
These forum polls are a might complicated for a computer-cowboy such as me.

Winchester Wade here. I shoot two case colored Ruger Bisley Vaqueros that are .44 Mag.
I usually shoot as a duelist, occasionally with BP.

:o 8) :D ;D The real deal 45 LONG COLT for cowboy :D ;D 8)
tEN wOLVES ;) :D ;D
44 mag, when I mean business :o
-
.
The wifey and I shoot 38 Specials out of the handguns and carbine. For cost and efficiency reasons mostly, but SHMBO doesn't like to much recoil.
And if Mama stays in the game, Daddy gets to buy more guns!
-
A pair of ROA's with 7 1/2" out doors at most matches and Marlin .44mag
(Pair of .36 Remmies indoor under protest)
-
pair of stainless old model vaqueros .38 bp loads
pair of stainless ruger old armies with conversion cylinders 45 colt bp loads
-
Awwww, dang it!!
I can't make this poll thing do multiple votes (even if you shoot 2 calibers).
MG
-
some days stainless......some days blue.....all are 45lc cowboy loads....that go BOOM!!!!
-
44-40 cal. in stainless model with Black Powder 3f, duelist style
-
MG
I am running either 38s or 44 Russian X-Longs depending on if we are travelling and how my hands feel. The travelling part is because we cut the ammount of ammo in half that way ;D.
Also some days it's the real deal and others they are shot with smokeyless.
-
.45 Colt in my NRV's, 38-40 in another make, and .38 Spec. in another make. All rounds are smokeless, at least at the moment......Buck 8) ::)
-
45 colt in a bair of blued OM vaqueros 5 1/2"
-
I solved the 38/45 dilemma by buyin 2 pair...one brace shoots 38's and the other 45's...depends on what I'm in the mood fer ;D
-
I started with a pair of 44Mags, one a Vaquero and the other a NMSBH (picked it up from a friend cheap). I then went to 45 BH Convertibles, then to a pair of 45Colt New Model Vaqueros (SS). I decided to convert to all 44/40 for simplicity, so bought a pair of slicked Piettas (nice guns). Trouble is these don't have enough room for my big fingers in the trigger guard and I set off the odd unexpected warning shot when hurrying. Dang! The NM Vaqueros in 45 Colt are back on the line until I get a chance to practice some and work the problem out. I need to get it sorted as i want to convert to Senior Duelist or Classic Cowboy.
I only shoot healthy loads, because the old 45 Colt BP loads were very healthy.
I will probably go to BP when I get everything sorted.
EDIT:
In Australia, the sissy gun rules. You need a special license to shoot anything bigger than 38s. The license is easy to get, you just have to ask for it basically and have been licensed for 6 months or more. For every 10-15 sissy guns shooters, you will get one big bore it seems. I must take note next big shoot.

Four Fingers of Death:
Where is the caliber break-off point for them "sissy guns"?
Above .38 cal?
Above .40 Cal?
MG
-
I shoot 38's with Big Lube bullets and wholly black! 8) 8) ;D ;D
-
I developed a .38 Short Colt load with 105gr pill, I have a pair of 4 5/8ths case harden w/white checkered ivory grips. they sur is purty!
-
When I first started SASS I shot a vaquero and a Bisley vaquero in 357, sold those and switched to 45 colt. I just got a set of the NMV in 357/38 Thinking about shooting them for a little.
-
I shoot a pair of 3 screw Blackhawks in.357/ .38 Smokeless
MG just curious, why did you include the .30 carbine in the poll? they aren't SASS legal.
-
Because Blackhawks were chambered for them.
And I know of a Pard who shot them for a couple of years.
-
Fair enough... ;D ;D
-
I shoot 44 Russians or Specials with black powder out of my 44 mag Vaquero's. Just made a deal to get one of the 44 special flat tops. Smokin Gator ;D
-
I shoot OMVBHs in 45 Colt loaded with 45 Schofields, packed clear full of 2F, 1 in each hand.
DM (Good luck at CSG, MG!!)
-
DM & FBM:
I can't make it to the match.
Duty called.
Thanks for the support!
MG
-
Awwww, sorry MG! Hope you get to come visit us sometime. Maybe the October State Blackpowder shoot?
Have fun on duty!
DM
-
It will only let me select two options, so...
Five .45 Colts
Three .44-40's (down from... eight, I think)
Three .38-40/.40 S&W convertibles
Six .357's, two of which are unconverted 3 screw Blackhawks
I've got a couple .44 mags and a .41 mag, but don't shoot them in matches.
-
The now rare and mystical 44-40, 4 5/8", one blue, one SS. 44-40 reeks old west, that's why I love em so much. I guess Gene Autry did too, enough to include it in the lyrics of his trademark song, 'Back in the Saddle again'.
"Ridin' the range once more,
Totin' my old .44"
I started out with a brace of .45's, but they now just sit there unused in the safe. (money in the bank)
-
Been shooting 45 long Colt for close to fifty years now, I love the caliber, it just says old west all over it, I have seven Six guns, and two rifles in this caliber.

Hello Ya'll,
Just wanted to make it official on this thread that I, the Reverend Sassquatch Dawg, shoot OMV in 357 mag with as much smokeless as the speed limit allows ::) behind the 158 gr RNFP lead. I am planning to do the same with the 45 LC Bisley Vaqueros as soon as the cash flow becomes available 'cause it thrills me to make the steel dance! ;D ;D ;D

I shoot the .44 Russian in my Vaqueros and in my 94 Marlin...... ;D
-
It has to be 45 COLT ;D ;D ;D That's the only caliber I have for my Ruger NMVs, Schofields, Rossi 92 & my 66
Great caliber

45 Colt in my Rugers, backed by a 10 ga.coach gun when needed ;D ;D

;D ;D 44's ;D ;D

45 Colt out of NMVs and soon to be shooting ROAs and ROAs with Kirst Converters in 45Colt!
-
Howdy all,
I use a pair of blue Vaqueros in 44-40 when I shoot smokrless, and a pair of SS Vaqoeros in 38-40 for the Holy Black!! But, I'm not really partial to shiny (SS) guns. Sooo I bought a pair of blue Vaqueros in .357mag. and had them converted to 38-40,,,,,and they are sweet.

When our Prime Minister (monster) got up and declared that he hated guns and would ban them he hadn't realised the number of shooters nor their influence. Our Olympic pistol shooters sold us out down the river whilst protectibg their interests and the ruling was worded exactly the same as their rule book, no calibre greater than .38. In relaity this is 357. After a lot of arm wrestling, they allowed big bores for Single Action Shooting and Silouette, but you have to have a High Calibre Permit. This is easily got, just a matter of asking for it and proving you have been shooting regularly for 6 months. You then have to shoot the big calibre at 4 matches a year to keep the permit.
The silly thing is I could buy a 375Win Thompson Centre Contender or Encore or even a BFR in that calibre (and 30/30s) without any special permits other than normal club membership, but if I was to want a 38/40 or a 44/40 I would require a High Calibre Permit.
When the new laws came out, most shooters just converted to 357s. Not me i won't go quietly. I had 2x44Mags and a 45Colt Commander. They confiscated the Commander and I chose to hand in the Bisley Blackhawk because it used to bite me under recoil, drawing blood with heavy loads.
I have repllaced these with a extra 44Mag, 2x 44/40s, 2x 44 Specials and 2x45 Colts(RNMVs) a Texan 44 Cap andf Ball and a pair of ROAs. We have had two sets of gun confisction here and I have set out to at least double the number of guns I have with each 'buy back.'
The other states aren't as accommodating, but my state has 2 Shooters Party Senators and they have influenced the law making priocess to the point where we have been given a few concessions (28day waiting period dropped after first gun purchase, etc). Now the firearms registry seem happy to just take the money ($30) for a permit as long as you meet the criteria without considering how many guns you have. I once requested 15 permits at once and they got approved. I just ordered 5 last week and they have arrived.
It's funny, but I went to a promotional shoot yesterday. A pistol club that has never had a cowboy shoot is giving it a try. They rounded up a bunch of the usual suspects and while we were sitting down to dinner Saturday night, we did a bit od a calibre comparison. Who said the 44/40 was dead? 5x 44/40 (four in BP), 1x45Colt (BP), 1x44Mag and 3x sissy guns. Butttttttttttt, then again the cowboys at the dinner are the old incorrugables and probably not 100% representative of the normal crowd. Good to see the brass pickererupperer hold up a 44/40 case and half the possee comes over for a look and having to cloise the range with nearly every shooter because on of the targets has been knocked right over.
-
My regular short guns are a pair of Vaqueros in .45 Colt: one sstl and one case/blue for a salt-n-pepper look.
I sometimes shoot a Uberti Thunderer in .45 Colt that has a 3-1/2" barrel and sees a bit of concealed carry duty.
My BBQ gun is a 1902 Colt Bisley in .32 WCF that shoots best with loads around 950 fps. This is quite a formidable cartridge that I also enjoy in a couple of original Winchesters.
I just picked my guns as I found them.
If I lived in the 1880's, my guns would be a Colt DA Frontier and a Winchester 1876 in .45-60, but then I could not shoot CAS.
-
45 Colt in one NMV and one OMV in 7 1/2" ;D
-
I don't know how I missed this.
.45 Colt, BP of course. ;D

-
I shoot a brace of .45 Colt OMV's in smokeless. 5 1/2 inch barrels, blued with color cased frames. Got a .44 manglem OMV in the 7 1/2 in flavor, also blued/colorcased, but she doesn't get much action.
-
I just found this thread. I have three revolvers all in 45 Colt of course. ;D a Cimmaron Pistolero, a Uberti 1875 Remington and a New Vaquero Bisley. The Bisley's partner is at my local FFL waiting for me to come in and start the paperwork. I will have to wait until April 30th as I bought a handgun March 30th and in this crazy state of California you have to wait 30 days between handgun purchases. It doesn't matter to them that I already own enough handguns to outfit a small town police force.

45 colt
-
Mostly 45 Colt.
Sometimes 44-40. 8)
-
44 spec was not a choice, but the vaquero is 44 mag
-
Cpt B:
Well, we do too. :o
All of them are "OM" Bisleys, Super Blackhawks, Vaq's are really .44 Mag revolvers shooting .44 shorts for SASS-use.
SASSy Shawna shoots them "new" (small) Vaqueros that ARE actually chambered in .44 S&W.
They got them "girly" pink grip panels too.

My NV's are 45 colt, as is my rifle, and I bought them specifically to shoot CAS. So far, they have never had a smokeless round thru them except possibly for the factory proof rounds.
-
Update on what I shoot. I have a nice pair of NMV Bisleys in 45 Colt of course.
-
Mine are NMV SS Bisleys in 45 with the Ruger emblem on the grips.

The NMV Bisleys are very nice guns. I have a pair in Stainless Steel, also 45 colt, that are my main match revolvers.
-
it will always start with 4, only because none start with 5 in SASS
-
44 specials ;D
I have 3 sets of Rugers in 44 specials .
And two sets of 44 mag but I dont use the Mags for CAS. 8)
-
.45LC Bisley Vaqueros
.45LC Uberti Russians
.454 RNFP bullets out of my ROAs
-
I forgot to say that I also shoot 45LC out of my lever action so I only have one type of ammunition to buy. Don't reload yet, but I am saving up my brass. ;D
-
Pay Dirt:
Yup. It's a great idea to shoot the same caliber out of all of your CAS firearms. It makes a busy day at the range go smoother.
A hint is to find which cast bullet shape that feeds and shoots the best in your rifle. And then try it in your Rugers. No doubt, it will work fine in them!!! ;D Most Pards like a RNFP.
Good luck on your hunt for reloading gear. There are many excellent tools out there.

I started out with a pair of blued Original model Vaqueros in .44 magnum with 7-1/2" barrels (I was shooting .44 specials out of them). Then I switched to a pair of stainless NV's with 7-1/2" barrels in .45 Colt......My lovely bride has joined the club and she thought my NV's were "Pretty", so she took them for herself!
Now I shoot an Original model stainless Bisley Vaquero in .45 Colt with a 5-1/2" barrel and a stainless Uberti 1873 in .45 Colt with a 5-1/2" barrel.....
