Some years back when I was into the BP revolvers, I use to have a leather powder horn that I kept my powder in for my C&B revolvers. I have been searching the web today with not much luck & wondered if anyone might know where I could locate one of these? I keep seeing the tin powder flasks & other powder containers but not what I'm looking for.

It just occurred to me that I might be thinking a leather shot bag & not a powder bag?

I've seen some really cool looking leather COVERED metal flasks but the only straight leather items I've seen are shot flasks and bullet bags. I'd think the leather would draw moisture and produce a real mess.

I regularly use a leather powder holder when I go muzzleloader hunting. A friend made it for me. It has a brass spring loaded top on it. I've used it for the past 10 years with no problems. I don't leave powder in it year round. Generally I fill it for the hunting season and empty in after. Never had a problem drawing moisture, of course I don't leave it out in the rain. As you probably know Oregon, where I live, is noted for rain. I wouldn't be afraid to use one for CAS shooting.

I was poking around on Ebay last night and saw a couple of leather powder flasks. Do a search on "powder flasks". I think they were around $20 with $10 shipping. The auction might be over by now.

E-bay has a metal/leather covered flask and two shotgun items that we always called snakes. You carried 2 around your neck, one for shot for your muzzleloading shotgun and the other for powder. I suppose you could use the powder one for CAS but it would be cumbersome.

DD, A friend made it for me. He didn't charge me anything. He makes ball bags and other miscell. BP items for the local black powder shop in Springfield, OR. I gave him a call and he said he makes 3 sizes. They run 25 to 35 dollars. He uses a brass valve to pore the powder from. If you're interested I can have him get in touch with you. I would print a picture and put it on the forum if I could figure how to get it there. Let me know if you're interested.

Davide Pedersoli make an extensive line of flasks and shuch, including a cased (hardened) leather shot flask with either Irish-style or English-style spout, if that is what you are thinking of .... Dixie Gun Works carries them (and other BP suppliers, undoubtedly:

Unfortunately, they are "mighty dear" at $125.00 each! As an alternative, if you do leatherwork (or know someone who does) you can buy just the spout from Dixie and other places, and make up the body to be fit to it ....

You used to be able to buy leather flasks and components to build your own from Dixie Gun Works.

RJ, those are some fine looking flasks indeed but what I had years ago was a soft leather bag with some type of plastic liner of some kind. Thanks for sharing & they are a bit steep for sure.

Almost sounds like you're talking about a bota bag with a flask valve on it. CJ

I would recommend NOT using a generic wine Bota bag. An incident has been mentioned about a guy who did that and it blew up on his hip, presumably resulting from static generated by the plastic liner.
If a leather bag with a plastic liner is specifically made for BP, then it should use a conductive plastic.

I'm beginning to wonder if that's infact what I had was a wine bag? I guess the Good Lord was looking out for me because it never exploded.
