Post by: Will Ketchum on February 26, 2004, 09:15:50 PM
I'm hoping that many of my pards who ride other ranges with me will join us here in Cas City.  The newest of the oldest Cowboy Action Forums.

Maybe we need to rechristen the town as New Cas City ;D

When you new pards sign on please check in with me and give me a howdy.

Welcome Irish Dave and Paper Chaser.  Nice to have you in town.

Chaser, the only way I'd be following you is if you had some paper on you.  Irish Dave my fellow Pinkerton and I would be fighting over the bounty.

Where you find Marshal Halloway I'm not normally far behind. Someone has to watch his back and I have been doing it for a fair amount of years.

Hi Back Will,

My Alias. Very simple. I had an argument with a 45 cal cap & ball pistol about 27 years ago. Did in my big toe. Right through it. I figured I'd never live that one down so I thought I'd monopolize on it seeing as no one was letting me forget it anyway. ;D

I thought it was probably something like that.  Good thing it was pointed a bit "higher"....I wonder what alias you would have then?

I better not go there. ;)

Dang... the big toe?  That creates pain just thinking about it.  Did you lose the whole toe?  I got a bad toenail from a college plywood and beer incident.. but that's another story.

WEll Will to answer your comment - An English War Bride (Crustsy Old Gal) came into the Credit Union were I worked after the accident and said I was "Bloody Lucky I didn't have it stuffed down the Front of my pants in my belt."

Big Hext, There is still a toe - the round ball went right through. Finally grew over. The mounted police here called it a botched suicide attempt and laughed their butts off. Got lots of get well cards for my toe.

Glad to see Big Hext and the others are 'at it' already on the Cowgirl thread, what a great pic of Big Hext, sure hope to hook up with, er shoot with him someday!
Nine Toe Jim, sir, got any other pics on a site where we can see you in Full Fig? Looks like you are doing a NWMP impression, nice spike!

Howdy, Will -- Happy to join you. One correction: NCOWS' Web site is www.ncows.org. (The old SwiftSite address will still get you there, I think.)

Hey, Nine Toe -- I could be called Nine-Finger, but my mishap wasn't nearly as romantic as yours (had an argument with a radial arm saw & lost). I tell the grandkids that I had it bitten off in a fight to the death with the dreaded miniature Iowa grizzly bear -- and I can show them its jawbone which I used as a knife handle.

Hey Will, thanks for the invite to join the party here at CAS City.

Will: I live in Manitoba and we only have a couple of fledgling CAS clubs struggleing to get going here. Alberta has a couple of very active clubs with lots of SASS members but to date I don't think any are SASS sanctioned. Most of us in Western Canada belong to the Western Candian Frontier Shooting Society which is SASS sanctioned but so far NCOWS hasn't made an appearance yet.

Big Hext: The Cabin is on our range & western town near Kelsey, Alberta we have a saloon too along with other buildings such as bunkhouses.

The Editor: There is no way I can top your story haha

Dutch: That's my son with me in the pic. His Alias is Moonshine McSwine after a fondness he used to have for the stuff. Alas he is now married and almost settled down but he still shoots. And can be persuaded to test the moonshine once in a while

Great web-site, Nine Toes.  A guy could spend hours just wanderin around in it.  How long did it take you to put your uniform together?
Title: Re: Welcome to The NCOWS Chamber
Post by: Nine Toe Jim on March 02, 2004, 11:29:26 AM
Thanks, Sedona

I've been researching and working on the uniform for about 10 years now. It's slow going but I've finally put a couple of them together. There were a lot of varieties since 1873. The one in the picture on my websied is circa the late 1870's. I have one that's closer to the turn of the century too.

Where you able to purchase everything or did you have to some of it made?
Title: Re: Welcome to The NCOWS Chamber
Post by: Nine Toe Jim on March 02, 2004, 12:15:37 PM
The tunic is a modern day red serge that I had altered. A few years ago there was a fellow in Canada that sold replica braid and buttons along with Victorian insignia and I was able to pick up enough to do a couple of uniforms for my son and I. The helmet can still be bought and the pants are the dress trousers of the present day RCMP that havent changed since the 1800's . If you watch ebay you can pick up the spurs and congress boots they wore with the dress trousers. There are a number of reference books out you can find on the net. The NWMP field uniform was a variety of odds and ends. I even have a pic of one constable in wooly chaps.
The picture is of me in one of my field outfits

If you haven't won a best outfit award yet, it's just a matter of time, you look great!  Hey Nine Toe Jim, speaking of attaching pics, maybe you could help me out with something.  I've treid to do it and it doesn't attach.  Heres what I'm doing, see if you can spot anything wrong.
1) click on additional options and hit the browse button.
2)  my documents an pics window opens , I select one and can see the file location open in the browse button window.
3) Close my documents window and click preview.
4)  wait a minute while it seems to be loading but when the preview window opens, there's no picture or attachment symbol.

I'm trying to up-load jpeg of less then the max 128 kbits.
??? jpeg is the same as jpg isn't it?  Got any ideas?
Title: Re: Welcome to The NCOWS Chamber

Well I did the same as you. When I checked the pic I was going to send it said it was only 113kb. When I sent it it didn't go. I reduced the pic to about 60kb and you saw the results.

I have won the best dressed military a number of times but lost a couple of years ago because they said it was a police uniform not a military one. The Northwest Mounted Police actually filled both jobs on the Canadian Plains. The actually were going to name them the Mounted Rifles like a miiltary group but went for the mounte Police instead

I use a photgraph program called Photoshop LE. But usually you get a photo program with a scanner or a digital camera. There is usually some feature on the programs to change the fomat of a photo to jpeg and also to reduce it in size

I don't know but the best thing to do is to contact the NCOWS office and find out how many members might be in your area.

Recently some ppeople who are SASS members and shoot with their local SASs club have sounded out other members to see if they might be interested in starting a NCOWS posse.  Many times they are able to use the same range.

There aren't but the requirements are pretty simple.  Check out Will's post on TFS.  http://www.frontierspot.org/viewtopic.php?t=8120

Regardless of posses, the Shootist and specifically Marlian's column is worth your membership dues.

Like Dave said, I think Big Hext and Three Legged Dog have put the idea on hold for the present.  :(  I have told Hext more than once that if any place should have a NCOWS posse it should be TEXAS ;D

Right now, it's just not in the cards.. If you head over to TFS and read the NCOWS past posts, you may get an idea about the issues surrounding setting up an NCOWS posse in SASS territory.

I think NCOWS is a fine organization and deserves the support of CAShooters who are authenticly minded.

Not that I'm aware of.  NCOWS does have it's own page but I'm not sure how current it is.

Since I moderate the NCOWS pages on both sites with the blessing of both the Marshal and El Cajon I try not to promote one over the other.  Both are well managed and the participants well mannered.  I am proud to associated with both and feel that this small bit I do might help promote NCOWS to the rest of the country.

Will,
Well, you wanted a howdy from us new members here, so consider this a Howdy-do.

Been reading all the NCOWS messages. Used to be a member several years ago but got out of the habit. Wonder if they'd let me have my old number back??  :)

See there has been some "slippage" in what's considered authentic, but not in the discussions about what it constitutes. Hope it doesn't get to bad. Authenticity was the reason I joined in the first place.

Might have to join back up as some of the guys have been bugging me to shoot the Baffalo Match again. Was a lot of fun.

Howdy Will, ;D

I've read what you wrote on both boards and find you have a lot of meat on the bones of knowledge you throw out.  I glean a lot of info from you, Hext, Capt.,Florabama,  by golly even learned a lot from Slim! (No offense Slim, you seem to be the one that has the most humor in his messages).

Cas-City is the first site I vist each time I check in.  the format to me is the easiest to moussy through, and the colors ease the reading.

I ponder about joining NCOWS, reading the threads sounds like a good organization and the magazine gets a big plus whenever its mentioned.

the only thing a holden me back is, ain't no posse out here in the Oregon country and the matches are all out east of here. (opps, forgot about the Calif. Posse!)

Ride on and Have fun!
