I guess the Deer Hunting is over for the year . Hope everyone had a good season . I guess now would be a good time to think about improvements for next year .

Yeah it's been over for a few weeks for me. I finally shot my 1858 pistol last night to unload it from late Muzzleloader season. I tagged four this year, about an average for me.

Two with bolt action 7mm, one with my old Model 94 32 special, and one on the last day with a Muzzleloader.

None with a pistol this year, I did have the hammer back on my Super Redhawk on a nice 8 pointer early in the season but decided he needed to walk for another year. Hopefully he made it, he will be nice next year if he did.

I sure didn't see as many nice bucks as I would have liked. Last year a lot of nice ones walked by me so I had high hopes to see some real good ones this year. Only saw one real mature buck and he had two tines broken off. If not for that he would have been a really nice 9 pointer.

No I didn't take any. A friend got some pictures of that same deer with the times broke off with his phone one morning when he hung around under his stand for about an hour. We also have him on trail cam but cant see the rack very well. I don't have the pictures on my computer.

We were hunting a gas line cut and between trail cam and us seeing him he showed up within a 100 yards area from 10 to 11 o'clock in the morning for a period of two weeks. I hope he didn't keep those daytime wondering habits and move to another farm because the knuckleheads across the creek would have shot him. He needed to walk and he'll be a wall hanger next year.

Got a chance to go Coyote Hunting yesterday . There is a reason for no pictures , no coyotes . There were no coyotes moving ? I called and called . Will try again in a few days .

I never have any luck calling Coyotes. Only time I called any in was when we were calling crows and didn't have a rifle. I usually get one every deer season though.

Last time I went out calling Coyotes I had twenty six turkeys come right up to the caller. Every one of them had a beard so as you might figure that is where I was turkey hunting opening morning in April.

A few years ago we were coyote Hunting down in the bottoms . We watched a pack of them  on a ridge , I broke out the ole dying rabbit call and pulled one from the pack . He ran right straight to the call . I used my ole Pennsylvania Hunter to ring his bell . Shot him at about 40 yards . I guess he was hungry . Wish I had taken a picture of him being a Muzzle Loader kill .

Went hunting yesterday didn't see any thing except a few squirrels . After carrying my rifle all day I decided when I got home I would fix a sling for Hunting . I used an old leather belt , a top from an ole moccasin , and now I have a sling for hunting . Now if i decide to go to a shoot all I have to do is untie it .

Rowdy I made one kinda like that for my Sharps. Sure made it better on me lugging that heavy thing around the desert. They aint even a tree to lean your rifle against out there. Learned that I can set my shooting sticks at an angle and that sling strap butts up again it ,for hands free glassing. Good part is this kinda sling can be taken off in a flash . Now I need make one for my 76 .....Dusty.

I carry my Rifle across my back to free up my hands . Sure makes it easier to get a dip of copenhagen or use my coyote calls . But don't put a dip in and grab your call . How long is the Mt. Lion season in ? Would you use a 44wcf or a 45-60 .

Can hunt Mt. Lion all yr. here in Tx. they are not protected ,got to many. You can take as many as you please ,by any way you choose ,day or night. Rowdy I think you would be armed aplenty with your 44-40 or your 45-60 . .....Dusty.

That is great news . I would LOVE to have a Mt Lion , that is right up there with a Bear . Now if I can just win the lottery .

We could have a fine time Hunting . Hunt all day sit around the fire at night . Probably have a nip or two . Life is short , better enjoy every minute .

What's your favorite hunting knife ? Everyone enjoys a good knife . some like Damascus some don't . Some like stag grips while others prefer wooden grips .

Over shoes , when did they become available ? When the weather gets wet and cold my ole Buffalo Runner boots will make your feet miserable at best . I have coated them with all the water proof boot dressing but they still leak after a while .

If anyone has any secrets that they would like to share on clothing tips for staying warm or dry . There's lots of tips we have used over the years going to cowboy shoots in the Winter on staying warm . Most know that wool clothing is a great start .

Wool is the only way to go, it doesn't loose its insulation value when it gets wet.

When I was still bear hunting with dogs, all the TN boys would use bear fat. While satting around the fire and after a kill, they would heat a big piece of bear fat and rub it on their boots. It did work very well. Tj

There has been some discussion either in NCOWS or The Historical Society about when rubber boots or overshoes came about.

As for favorite knives, I guess I'm just not a knife guy, almost every deer I've ever field dressed and skinned has been done with my 3 blade Buck pocketknife that has been riding around in my pocket for 30+ years.

Howdy ,Hunting in West Tx. can be Hot or Cold! I have seen 50 deg. swing in just hrs. As far as my leather boots I use hightops for the cactus more than the snakes ,even though they, call em snake boots. I coat them with snowseal two times a yr. Keeps em waterproff and they dont crack in the hot&dry. And it can get dry in the desert Amigo.I think Cliff hit the nail on the head with the Wool. I use Wool shirts.With a Buckskin coat over the wool shirt a felt hat and some Mohair socks made here in the Hill Country region I am ready for some pretty cold weather.I'm kinda like Pony Express about the knife ,mine is a Old Timer Trapper my Dad gave me 30 somthing yr. ago. Cant tell you how many animals it has skinned, or meat it has made. Guess in the hundredes.
