1861 Remington Army

Hey everybody. New member here from Nebraska. I came here for possibly some help. I have what I am pretty certain is a original 1861 Remington New Model Army 44. Serial number is in the 35XXX range..

I have several questions to ask about it but one I want to know right now is my revolver has two cuts in the frame on both sides of the hammer. I have researched some, but cannot find anything like these cuts in any I have viewed so far. Anyway if you have a idea why they are there please let me know..Thanks and I will try to post a pic.

Also I am unsure of what section to even post this in, so if it is not right you can move it..Bruce

Do they have anything to do with mounting a stock??

Well that is something I have never thought of. I just do not know much about these Remingtons. It is the oldest of any of my Antiques..Thanks

I've never seen such a thing on a Remington.  Do you have any pictures from other angles?  By the way, where in Nebraska?

I am in Columbus. Heres some pics of it from both sides.

 The lever is a replacement and so is the trigger guard I believe. Only other markings I can see is the serial number on the underside of the barrel which matches the one under the left side of the grip.  Partial serial numbers match on the back side of the cylinder where the hand engages that I can make out anyway. A (C) on the backside of the cylinder where the numbers are stamped too.

 A  (C)  under the right grip on the frame.  A   (J)  on the rear left side of the barrel near the frame on the flat.  Barrel Markings that are visible yet is NEW MODEL on the top flat close to the frame. And  (E REM) is all thats visible besides the NEW MODEL stampings.  

I think as close as I have been able to date it is in 1863 production with the 35,XXX range serial number.

Barrel has the mortised cut German Silver style cone sight. NOT the screw in type front sight.

 One guy at a Gun Show said it is a interesting Gun and offered me 1000.00 trade for it. Never asked him how much cash he would pay. I have significantly less than that amount in it however.

I can post as many pics as you may need to help me evaluate this Revolver. I would really like to know exactly what I have. I will throw in a pic of a repro box I am putting together for it too. I am hoping to find a Powder Flask, Original or repro, at the local Gun Show tommorrow...

Niederlander if you happen to be close to Columbus and know these pretty well I would certainly entertain being able to show it to you if you can tell me about it..
