Found Embroidered Crossed Rifles
« on: June 06, 2011, 10:20:36 PM »
Just ordered a Black Slouch Hat from Leta at Coon Creek.  She had the embroidered rifles.  Now that I have them, not sure I really want to sew them on the hat as all the photos I can find post civil war there are no branch insignias on the hats.  I may have to attach them just to counter all the crossed sabers I see on folks wearing silver captains bars.  The cav seems to need the crossed sabers.  Thinking the infantry should be as proud of crossed rifles.

During the period of use of the black campaign hat no insignia was officially designated as far as I can ascertain. The army did not prescribe hat insignia for the various types of campaign hats till circa 1899-1907.Not to say that unofficial insignia was worn by some in the field during the period but most period photos show none worn until during or after the SAW.

Hollyweird is the most common place to find what your looking for.
Just the other night I read a book that stated if a soldier of the period 1865-1890 was properly "Uniformed" when he left the depot he was not by the time he got to his duty station.
By the end of a campaign most were in civillian clothes because the quality of the uniforms were that bad.
Other than rank most had no decoration.

Sgt Chapman

the coon creek black campaign hat looks the part and a good price to, but i wouldnt sew a insignia on, a officers hat cord is all you need , the iinsignia seem to be more confined to the kepi, not the campaign hat

So when are we going to get to see some pictures of you in all this gear you seem to own?  Just curious.  I would hate to get the idea you are an internet troll if it wasn't deserved. ;)

Thanks for the advice.  Coon Creek has assembled my 1874 dress coat with proper 6th infantry captains paddles and my dress sword belt.  They are also making the 1881 helmet with the pickle spike worn by the infantry.  Should be mailed out tomorrow.

Helmet really should not be worn with the 74 coat, but a shako is really hard to come by.  Dirty billies will make one for $375 or there abouts.  May do that eventually

Really matters not as I managed to obtain an authentic Civil War horstmans 1850 foot officers sword.  My only scabbard is a replica dark one so if the sword is not correct the gold braid on the sleeve cuff should not be an issue.  I may end up with the 1880s frock coat some time, what the heck it is only money.

There are photos with SAW officers carrying the 1850 foot officers sword even though it had be obsolete since the 1874 regs

OK I think it's pretty plain to all what we have here, just wanted to be 100% sure I was right. ;)  Seems if you call him he goes away for a while and comes back when he thinks everyone has forgot. ::)

I don't have a lot of disposable cash for the expensive uniforms, so I get by with what I have. I portray an enlisted man in the Infantry or Cavalry. I won't ever have the dress items, I would rather have the weapons that are period correct than expensive uniforms.
