Are they worth the hassle and the $30 every 3 years to maintain?

I've had one for years. If you are willing to follow the rules, keep the bound book as required, yes they're worth the $30 dollars. Many outfits like Midway,Grafs,Brownells give you a licensee discount that can save you that $30 license fee the first order. Not having to go through an FFL can pay for it on one gun but be aware of what the license covers and what it doesn't.It's not a license to buy and sell on a large scale and you are subject to inspection although I have never been and don't know personally of anyone who has of my friends who have one.Follow the rules,no problems.Comes in handy at gun shows in states where waiting periods and dealer transfers are required.Be aware also that some dealers will not accept them, especially on the auction sites, that's their perogitive their store.Check and make sure the seller will accept it before buying to avoid hassles and unexpected costs and disappointment.

As far as I am concerned they are as not only can you order guns on the C&R list and have them sent directly to your home, but you can also get discounts from Midway and Brownells.

I have never heard of this.  Someone please explain.  I have several antique guns and every once in a while get the urge to buy another one.  Is this a state thing?
Thanks

No - it's a 'Federal Thing' - that allows the holder to add those weapons on the BATF 'Curio and Relic' list without having to go through a Federal Firearms Licensee.

Sometimes...

Not all FFL holders will ship to a C&R holder - regardless of the legality of the sale.

As mentioned - it is 'not' a method of going into business as a seller - it was designed for the collector.

You 'must' keep a 'bound book' and you 'are' subject to inspection - though little of that happens - but still, it does happen, so keeping things straight is the best course of action.

As to the discounts from Midway and Brownells - you can get that pretty easily if you buy much from them at all - all you have to do is ask.

Ask your local BATF office for details - or look online.

Scouts Out!

Sent in my $30 monday we shall see how long the process takes.

Also you only need to list C&R weapons you acquire after getting the C&R.  Anything prior to 1899 is not a C&R it is an antique.  Stuff less than 50 years old and not on the C&R list is also excluded from Bound Book Recording.  No need to list C&R weapons acquired prior getting C&R.

I had mine in under a month after I sent in the paperwork.

You do have to list "prior" aquisitions if you get rid of them after you get the FFL. So, if you sell the rifle x that you got 25 years ago, and it is a C&R rifle, you need to log it. If its not C&R, you dont log it at all. If you dont sell anything, (like me), then you dont have to log the previous guns. I have all of mine logged in a separate book that is well marked as not being my FFL book. Thats the one I use for insurance should something happen.

Usually mine stay with me forever, made a mistake once and traded a Ruger Mark II and some cash for a Stoeger Stanless Luger.  Had a casting flaw that made firing it spotty and could not see the sights for all the glare.  That went away for a Mauser Eagle Luger, much like the swiss luger.

The rest have found a good home but I have a hard time keeping the rust off due to my son drooling on his inheritance.

i have had a c&r for several years. i think there worth the trouble. but you run into many people who just don,t know the way they work. some states, like the "peoples democratic republic of california" hate those things and do everything they can to keep you from appling for one. (when i was a inmate of the p.r.c. i got one because i love screwing with those overpaid useless government employes)in idaho there is no problem. the california dealers are so scared that many of them just don't deal with them. kurt250

There ya go! That was pretty quick from what some folks say.
I got mine, and then the next month found out we was gonna be parents, so I have only added 1 C&R to my book so far.
