Santa Fe Hawken
« on: August 28, 2019, 10:08:36 AM »
All:
I have not shot a cap lock rifle in many years.  I switched to flint about 1983 and then stopped shooting muzzle loaders about 1991.  I have a Santa Fe Hawken resting in my safe, that I have decided to shoot.  I think Pedersoli built these rifles for Santa Fe/Western/Allen Arms.  I bought some new Remington # 11 caps and they are too loose, I found a tin of CCI # 10's that have been hiding in my shop for 40 years, same story.
How do I solve my problem?
Thanks,
T-Joe

Change out the nipple?

Either that or Crazy Glue?

I prefer Remington #11 because of their folded construction. If they?re loose a little push at the edge with your thumb nail will set a burr and you can push them on easily and they stay on unless you?re doing cartwheels, I?m past cartwheels these days.  ;D

If Crazy Glue doesn't work, try pushing Remington #10's onto the nipple and then banging on it with a hammer until they stay. You should see some results then. ;) ;D

(The Goldilocks Solution used to be, if Remington #10's were too tight and #11's too loose, then Dynamit Nobel 1075's would be just right. I haven't seen 1075's in a long time, though . . .)

I believe I'd go to Track of the Wolf and get a nipple made for caps that are readily available.  Just makes life easier............

For what it's worth, from the little research I did online, I think the nipple is 1/4 x 28.  If in doubt, I'd pull it and measure the threads.

If a cap is loose on the cone, I'll gently compress the sides to give the cap's rim and oblong shape. If the cone is too small to even get away with that, I second the others here, and would look into getting a new cone.

My Santa Fe Hawken is a Uberti. It takes a .520 ball. There is a website concerning these rifles.
