It has been requested that we have the banquett at an in-door venue for 2012. (We got lucky with the weather this year.)  We have started the search.  As soon as we have that lined up, and a cost established, we will begin registrations.

Registrations for 2012 will be handled by myself, pretty much the same way we did for the 2011 Grand Muster.
[If anyone has improvement suggestions, please send me a PM.]

Respecfully;

I am so excited, and will be there at all costs.

Not only is the GAF worthy of support,- the Kansas Vigilance Committee consistently hosts memorable events.

To my mind the above two groups represent the very best combination that could be asked for when considering variety of arms allowed coupled with creative use of a range.

Never heard of NCOWS allowing RIFLE calibers in the main match,  GAF does give more leeway in weapon choices and isn't as strict about PC gear.  Authenticity is encouraged by the GAF and rewarded.  but those that don't go all the way are still allowed to join the fun even at the regional and national level.  within the rules of the hosting range.

The way I feel is the GAF says "this is what would best fit what we are doing"  NCOWS often says "you can't use that here"
basically the same goal  but approached a different way.  Just my 1/2 cent worth.

For those that do not want to do the primitive camping on-site, there is the Garnett Inn and RV Park (Sheila Woosley  785-448-6800 or www.garnettinnandrvpark.com) located 2.5 miles from the range.

Last time I stayed there (2011) they had a good clean place, and reasonable rates.  Very easy commute to the range. (3 - left turns)

I second the request on a course-of-fire summary - or at least a round count.  I am undecided wheter to register as "Rifleman (SS rifle & pistol) or "Infantryman (SS rifle only).  I assume the Infatryman may expend mor rifle ammo than a Rifleman?:  "The Infantryman shall engage only designated rifle targets but may be required to engage extra designated targets in lieu of shooting the pistol targets."

My rifle ammo is rather expensive (even empty brass), so I would like to have an idea what I will need in time to "arrange financing" to obtain enough...

I have started gathering door prizes for the Grand Muster.  Last year Windy City did a great job w/door prizes would like to get close this year.  If you can come up w/something bring it w/you.  I am still not a member of GAF. I have tried a number of times to register on line with no success.  I have taken the name and address off the FAF site and mail a hard copy at least twice about to give up.

For reviews of what we did at the Dept. Muster please see the DOMM 2012 thread in the After Action Reports: http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,44406.25.html It contains several. Also be sure to look at Cowtown Scout's photobucket slide show for a look at the targets we used. I realize you will need to use the targets you have, though I might be able to bring a few of ours for people to try. Anyway I think you'll like to at least see what we used.

We had 3 stages of between 15 and 22 rifle targets and between 5 and 10 pistol targets. With the heat we took some time off during the hottest part of the day and still finished all three stages in 1 day. We had 13 shooters  (I counted myself twice as I shot in 2 classes). We all shot in the same squad.  This doesn't sound like a lot of shooting but it was enough to be satisfying and yet not so much as to risk heat casualties. Most participants expended somewhere between 100 and 115 rifle cartridges. In the last couple of years that we have used the skirmish format we have found that 15 to 22 rifle targets in the heat of July is about optimal. Given that you will be hosting the GM in Oct. and that it is the Grand Muster you might want to add a couple more stages and/or a few more targets per stage.

The distance to the pistol targets was in the 10 to 20 yard range and the distance to rifle targets was somewhere in the 50 to 100 yard range. If a contestant hit a target 3 times without knocking it down it is considered dead. If he misses 2 to 3 times he is encouraged to move closer. We usually throw in some bayonet dummies, ect. One thing we found is that this number of targets will neccesitate using a stopwatch as most shot timers reset at 2 minutes and these stages tend to run between 8 and 10 minutes.

Time must also be figured in to allow the Long Range match as it is now included in the Brigade Championship computations.

The following is a video of Ned Niederlanders first run at the first stage. I ran out of memory on my camera or I would have video from all 3 stages.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4EjUYh8mxc&feature=youtube_gdata (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4EjUYh8mxc&feature=youtube_gdata)

I recognize that my setup is unique and adjustments might need to be made, but this is the review you requested.

Guns I shot the EEM (same format as the main match) in Staff Officer (pistol only) thus engaging all targets with pistol only and shot roughly the same total round count (ie. 25 rifle targets+ 10 Pistol targets= 35 targets) as if I had shot it as most folk did using a rifle and a pistol. Again with all targets being "must hit" there is no way an exact round count can be given but a rough rule of thumb is that most folks will use approximately 2 shots for each rifle target  and the same or slightly less for each pistol target. This approximation will be +/- depending on the distance to the target.

I hope other participants will add their comments on the stages and setup, ect. This is a match and format that; as one participant said, "Truly needs to be experienced to be fully appreciated."
Title: Re: 2012 GAF Grand Muster: Garnett KS
Post by: Drydock on August 03, 2012, 05:54:32 PM
Just my 2 cents, but I think a 3 stage  Main Skirmish match, A single stage EEM Skirmish, with a seprerate long range component for both Main and EEM, is just about optimal for a 3 day match.  I'd rather see a few more targets than additional Runs.  But 20 to 25 seems about right.

-Friday-
-EEM in the Morning,  EEM Long range all afternoon at shooters discretion.  Those that wish may shoot their main match rifle for score as well.

-Saturday-
-One skirmish run in the Morning, one in the afternoon.  If numbers warrent, split into 2 squads and swap off. Long range that evening.

-Sunday-
-Final Skirmish for all hands in the morning, awards in the early afternoon, and everyone's away!

IMHO, have a cuppa joe on me!

Gen'l Hancock said Indians would follow the smell of cigar smoke and look for the fat man. I don't think this will work, though.

I suppose one of the KVC boys will print one of their maps. Or a couple of those longitude and latitude numbers.

But frankly, I wouldn't give those KVC boys too much latitude.

I regret to advise that it now turns out I am also unable to attend ....   :(

My two year old grandson was taken from Medicine Hat to the Children's Hospital in Calgary yesterday, and last evening was diagnosed with leukemia.  They will be starting him on chemotherapy on Monday.  My wife and I are in Calgary now and for the next several days at least.  Needless to say, I will have other priorities for the foreseeable future.

Please help with your prayers and good wishes.

Grant,  So very sorry to hear of this situation with your GRANDson.  I shall also be praying for him. My God is still in the healing business today even as He was back during Bible times and has not stop being since. I shall issue an alert to the GAF constituency to be in prayer for all of the family.

As has been said I am very sorry to hear this. Your family has been in my prayers since I saw your message earlier and will continue to be until I hear of his healling.

Also as has been said the muster won't be the same without you and we'll miss you. Jacob found another piece of your .303 brass yesterday. I guess I'll just have to wait a while longer to return it.

Thanks to all for your prayers and encouragement!

Ebin had a "central line" surgically implanted below his collarbone yesterday, from which all blood samples can be taken and through which medications can be administered.  Apparently it will remain in place for as long as 2 1/2 years, throughout his treatment regimen.  Hopefully he can now get over his fear of nurses .... until now whenever one showed up it was most likely to stick a needle into him for one reason or another!

They are starting his first round of chemotherapy today .... The first of four 37-day treatment blocks.  We have been told that an improvement could be apparent as early as the end of this first block, although they would continue with the whole series in any event.  I understand that the recovery rate with the particular type he has is 85-90%.

Don't know how I managed the honor, but I seem to be Ebin's favorite grandparent - no matter who he may be with, when I show up, he has to come to "Papa"  .......   Kinda chokes me up, y,know .....

Hope our prayers increase his odds for a full & speedy recovery.  I'm sure having his Papa nearby helps at least as much as anything those mean old nurses have to offer.

Jerry, Your pictures are inspiring to me. The level of detail and authenticity is wonderful. I love the big floppy '72 hat. It is spectacular! You don't see those too often. I've thought about getting one of those and the 1872 pleated blouse. Man that would be a goofy uniform. Very specific to a short period of time. Put on a Palmer brace system an you could have the most unpopular uniform of all time!

I've spent nearly 20 years researching the men and equipment at Fort Hartsuff. (One of my jobs there when I worked there was teaching guests about the men, material, and equipment of the time) I don't have the '72 blouse, but have been considering having one made. I do have a plamer brace though. I wore it with my dress uniform Saturday night. When you come out next summer I can drag all my stuff out again and let you look at it all if you want.

I just got to see the pix today (Thanks Windy City Joe!!!) Wow, I really didn't realize that d***ed blouse shrunk so bad in the closet.  :-\

Actually the only M-'72 equipment I have is the campaign hat and the shoes. (The boots I'm wearing with the field uniform are the M-1876) Most of my uniform and equipment is M-1874

The only museum quality repro of the M-1872 blouse was Connie Lindmeier from South Pass WY., but to the best of my knowledge she has ended production. The Quartemaster Shop (and others) do make a copy, you even see one on e-bay once in a while.

Think ALICE suspenders only made from leather and connecting only on the front of the body. The back straps connected to the haversack and clothing bag.

Sort of. They sort of hang under your arm because the other end of the strap hooks to the front. The blanket roll is higher, about your shoulder blades. My expirience with them is unusual because they weren't made for guys my size.

But, Yep, they were very unpopular and basically not used except when some officer made you.

Trooper Ebin seems to be doing fairly well.  The chemo is taking its toll on him a bit and, because of a localized infection, they had to remove the "central line" surgically implanted in chest, through which intravenous medications were to be administered and blood samples taken, on an ongoing basis.  Of course, he was receiving regular antibiotics because of his seriously compromised immune system (resulting both from the leukemia and the chemotherapy.)  But they are giving an oral antibiotic which seems to be doing the job.  It is my understanding that they will try to install another central line in due course, as his initial regimen of treatments is scheduled to continue into February.

Treatment seems to be having a positive effect already - for example, his level of "normal (as opposed to cancerous, and thus ineffective) blood platelets had dropped as low as 12 - normal is 150 to 200 - but has now climbed back to 140.   :)

He has a long campaign ahead of him yet, however, so continued thoughts and prayers will be greatly appreciated!
