4 inches of snow and 25 degrees in our outdoor kitchen Sat morning.  Guess the shooting went well, all troops seemed to be well fed. ;D

Guess they are all tired and worn out, cooks made it back to town and got unloaded by 10;30.  Asst. cook has spent the day cleaning gear and will be taken out for a steak dinner on Sat for his fine effort, head cook had to work today.

Oh took wife out to eat on aririval to town about 8, didn't mind two grungy cooks, resterant smelled like a forest fire and forgot and war my wool jacket to work today, was asked to remove it to pick-up chuck wagon cause at first they thought they had a fire in the back room.  Hope to get a report in the next day or so with cook camp pictures.  Chaplin was chewwed out by cook for droppin' somethin' in cook fire. ;D

Texicans went crazy and played in the snow, heard there was a reb snow angel on parade ground, didn't check out rumor.

Then I'm glad they did it on the parade ground and not behind the barracks. :P  Ithink they were tryin' to catch flakes on their tongues Fri night, weird. ::)

Great time, great stages, great food great prizes, great people.  Battle rifles everywhere.  Uniforms!  An 1891 Argentinian army uniform to go with an M1891 Argentinian Mauser! Rolling blocks, Krags, Trapdoors, an MLE and a Martini Henri from our Canadian contignent.  Colt New Army and Navys.  The General put in an appearance.  Charles Isaac from the Department of the Atlantic showed up and put on a Clinic with his Krag.  Rattlesnake Jacks legs made another appearance. Montgomery Little got his name in the rules with a 211 yard pistol shot.

 Wait'll ya'll see the pictures!

Lots of stuff to hand out.  Staying in an 1870s barracks was a treat, perhaps the only time I'll ever get to do that.  Y'all missed something special

Had a sore throat before I left for the muster on Thurs. Ran on Alieve and willed myself not to let it get me down all weekend. Guess I ran out of determination today. The kids were telling me I looked like I should go home, but I toughed it out. Will file a complete report when I get some rest.

The last report I had on Bow View's parents was that Mom was banged up pretty good with some broken bones but nothing life-threatening. Dad has a broken C-1 Vertabrae but isn't paralyzed. Will get a pace maker when strong enough.

Thanks to eveyone for coming.

Congratulations to Brigade Champion Col. Drydock.

I know I had a LARGE time!  Thanks everyone for coming!  Cool to see so many Krags on the line.  Probably haven't been that many firing live ammunition since about '98!  I know the National Muster goes to Texas next year, but we're going to do something here, too.  Planning is already in progress!

Shooting Krags with Charles Isaac and  Ned Niederlander was a privilage and honor.   And accepting the BC in the company of everyone there, was an honor by every definition of the word.  Thanks to you all.

Thank you for the kind words Drydock!  Charles Isaac can really make that thing sing, can't he?  I've been shooting CAS for eight or ten years, but this is more fun.  I love the knowledge and historical interest displayed.

I wish I could have been thier to see the snow.  I really enjoyed my time thier thurs and fri.  I was shocked that I could tie with M.T. Brass for anything.  (4th long range rifle ?)  I think he is ready to plan for next year.  I am sorry I had to rush out fri night but when I got word of my parrents accident I knew that's where I had to be.  I got ahead of the big snow and the drive wasn't bad.  Not near as much snow up north along the border (SD and NE).  Did the barraks stay arm enough?  I heard that Sruffy Skippy did pretty good in my place.  I am looking forward to Jerry's report and more pictures.
I want to thank you all for your prayers and support,

Update 11:50 am Tuesday
Harold is in surgery right now getting a pacemaker so his heart won't try to stop again.  That is probably what caused the accident as he blacked out and went off the road and their car thought it could fly.  Since being in Sioux city Mercy Hospital he has been pretty stable and no more episodes with his heart.  He did have a slight fever so they held off until today to put the pacemaker in.  I think they will probably go in to repair his neck (c-2?) tomorrow.  He does NOT have any paralysis  (thank you God) but will need time to heal.  He is very painful from several broken ribs (again) which complicates his breathing some but he is managing well.
Margaret will probably move from the Hospital to "swing bed" today or tomorrow.  She is at Sacred Heart in Yankton.  She has a broken right ankle but shouldn't need surgery on it as long as the bones don't move.  She also has a chip in her left wrist which make using a walker a bit of a challenge.
She also has problem with her back but is managing with pain meds for now.  This will probably need repair when she is stronger.
Thank you everyone for your prayers and good wishes,  Mom has already received a lot of visitor and she appreciates everyone so much.
They both have a long recovery ahead and it's hard on them being in separate hospitals but the lord is watching over them both and we carry on.

Paul

The Pony Express family arrived home safely Monday evening, delayed a bit because of road construction in KC, and spending extra time in downtown KC searching for an asian food store we heard was there. Really enjoyed the match, even if it was a bit chilly. We arrived back home to 50 degree temps Mon evening! But phone was out again, so was not able to report in untill now(via laptop wireless, courtousey of Hardees)

It was a great time, and I will get my pics up one of these days soon.
I came home to Freeda not feeling well, and with the doctor visit today, she has the dreaded flu. Pooper Trooper is in fine spirits so far, other than a stuffy nose. Freeda is quarantined to the big screen tv upstairs away from us. I am now on Tamiflu.... :-\

It was good seeing everyone there, and finally getting to meet most of the faces that I see in pics here on CasCity.
I am already looking for an 1890s Russian uniform. Go figure....

Great report, Troopers:

I'm happy to hear that no one got a Line of Duty injury from self-induced frostbite.  ;D  heheheh
Delmonico contacted me today with a report of rounds fired, new records & of course, the mess report.
I want to thank him & all who supported this Muster.  There are too many to mention here for their hard work under adverse conditions.
That'd be 8" of snow in western Nebrasky?????

We sure hope to shoot with you next year if possible  with a "new" Mil-Spec rifle.  8)
;D I have a Pard who is talking about selling his Krag.
I think a used Krag (in VG condition) should be a straight-across trade for a NIB DPMS A-15 shorty.  ???  Doncha reckon?

Respectfully,
Mustang Gregg

PS:  Major Bow View, best of luck to your folks.  I sent you a PM.

Col. Drydock, I hope I can get a Krag by next year. I have sorta give up on the other one surfacing and returning back to Boggs Creek. I need to call them this week to see if they have any news. My two revolvers that were shipped from Florida on the 21st have not arrived either. Not a very good batting average so far. I look forward to next year's Muster, just no snow.

I'm sure sorry to hear that.  Well, at least its in Texas next year, and I'll bet the Texican contigent gins up a local match or two between now and then as well.  Dang good folks there, good, ah, storytellers fer sure.

I'll keep checking around myself, it sure was a nice rifle.

Post by: Drydock on October 13, 2009, 08:03:41 PM
Well, we're all waiting for pictures I'm sure, but I want to off a personal observation:  By my count, the most numerous rifle at this years muster was the Trapdoor Springfield.  2nd in number was the Krag.  3rd were the various lever actions.  To my knowledge thats the first time the Milspecs have outnumbered the Cowboy guns in class.  A real departure from the SASS matchs we most all started with.  It was a treat to watch, and bodes well for the future I have to believe.

Other rifles I saw on the line at the 2009 Muster:

-an M1891 Argentine Mauser
-An M1862 Spencer Rifle
-an M1895 Winchester .30-40 Carbine
-A Rolling Block
-A Sharps Carbine
-A Magazine Lee Enfield (MLE)
-the Legendary steel killing Martini-Henri of Rattlesnake Jack

Not to mention the various handguns, Colt SAAs of course, but Schofields, New Armys, Webleys, Enfields, and a lot of neat stuff that came out at night in the barracks.

Post by: River City John on October 13, 2009, 08:19:29 PM
Yes, it was a great shoot, although a challenge to keep warm and dry at times.

On our squad alone we saw represented:
Henry
1866 Yellowboy Improved Henry
1873 Winchester
1895 Winchester (in .30-40 no less!)
Spencer rifle
Martini-Henry .577
Rolling block carbine
Trapdoor carbine
Trapdoor rifle
Sharps carbine
Krag (several)
Argentine Mauser

this variety is just one of the many things I like about the GAF. And the sidearms were just as varied. All in all considering the weather, people shot well. Although it was sometimes slow getting those reloads done fumbling with numb fingers in the cartridge box when you weren't quite sure you had actually grabbed onto a cartridge until you could visually inspect to see if it was between your fingers. We kidded Rattlesnake Jack by volunteering to carry his Martini-Henry after he shot. Ten or so expended BP rounds of .577 M-H warms up a barrel nicely.

My personal thanks to Dusty Tagalong and Shalako Al for transporting my carcass to and from the range over the three days.

It was something to see all the uniforms within the setting of Ft. Hartsuff. Of course I forgot my camera, so I'm going to have to rely on the kindness of others to post pictures.

Everyone took home multiple prizes. Jerry will be on to eventually record the awards.
We had people from Virginia, North Carolina, Texas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, Missouri and of course, Canada.
There may have been other states represented, but I was just not made aware of it.

Again, great time. It was the largest group of this nature ever to be billeted in the Enlisted Barracks at Ft. Hartsuff, so we established a record.

RCJ

p.s. I see Drydock posted ahead of me the same listing and observation,- I had forgotten about the Lee-Enfield.

Look in the backround of Capt. Macks video. Its great!  And typical of the Grand Muster. Theres several decades of blue US Army uniforms, A well chilled Confderate, an 1890s Marine, our rather north of the border Argentinian, and some poor fellow who got really lost on his way to Cuba . . .

Well, got some more done, a shot on the way up on Highway 11:

Got there about dark and unloaded, this was the view:

I lit a lantern, and went to work on a hunk of corned beef and some coffee:

Rain in the night dampened things:

But was got going again right after daylight:

After finishing cooking with cabbage and tators it was good:

Salt Crick Rick watching the gravy for supper:

Troops kept showing up, some in civies:

The fire was kept going in to guide in late arrivals:

Morning was chilly:

But the work in the kitchen went on:

Evening after supper found the troops pretty much staying in the barracks because of cold weather:

Checking a fancy weather device it was decided that it might be gettin' white outside:

New device was accurate:

Breakfast was a bit late, but was sausage and scambled eggs and bacon to fuel the troops well for the cold, despite an accident where several eggs were lost, and more had to be cracked:

Rick prepared the noon bacon and beans:

The kitchen became a sloppy mess:

But dinner was ready for the troops when the returned:

Five dutch ovens were filled with roast and veggies for supper:

And the sundown was great:

The troops retired to the barracks after supper for prizes:

Because of tactial planning in the barrarks till the wee hours of the morning, the cooks slept a bit late and instead of hash, the pot roast was rewarmed for breakfast, and the noon meal started, which because of the cold required the lard and flour to be warmed a bit:

Salt Crick Rick cleaned some of the gear before leaving:

Despite the weather looking bad, the commissary dept was able to make it home with just a bit of ice stuck to the side of the wagon:

And a great time was had by all. Was delighted to receive the Grand Muster Challenge Silver Plate for the Division of Missouri. How was that Windy City Joe? A great big "Well done." goes to the members of our Division: Sgt Drydock, Windy City Joe, Pony Express and Capt. Montgomery Little. With awards for Iron Trooper (Sgt Drydock), various 1st-3rd place positions in side shooting events and 1st thru 3rd in unifrom competition, the points mounted up and we are proud to have the "Plate" in our possession.
It will be at the MO State Shoot at Branson, MO, Oct 22-25 and the NCOWS Convention in March 2010 as a recruiting tool. If you are going to be there, shoot in uniform and come visit the Gripmaker tent to see it and here more about the Muster.

All I can say is WOW! What a time it was out there living at historical Fort Hartsuff and seeing all that fine shooting.

A few instances I witnessed are the 211 yard pistol shot with a 7 1/2" SAA executed by Capt "Gripmaker" Little. Texas Sarge with Scooters H&R M1873 trapdoor carbine and M.T. Brass with an M1873 Winchester got dialed in and each made two hits on the 211 yard target.

I was left in a state of shock when Dalton Masterson swept clean the final set of pistol targets with a black powder loaded single action-ONE HANDED RAPID FIRE! It was like something they do in a Clint Eastwood western with trick photography and sound effects! Absolutely amazing, thumb bustin' at it's finest.

I cut my hand and Salt Crick Rick, a former Navy Corpsman, rendered immediate first aid. Some things never change, like the Docs helping Marines.

I think the cooks, Del and Salt Crick Rick, were the hardest workers out there, providing delicious and authentic chow that thickened my blood- thinned from years of living in the South. The cold probably would have done me in if not for them.

A special thanks to River City John for recruiting me and also to Ned Neiderlander for advice on hand position on the bolt handle of the Krag. My fingers sometimes hit the magazine in rapid fire until Ned provided me with expert advice on bolt handle grip some months back.

And once again, congratulations to the 2009 Iron Trooper, Col. Drydock and thanks for all the quick answers on GAF weapons.

It was an absolute pleasure to watch Charles Isaac work that Krag.  Now I  might do a few other things things just fast enough to stay with him, (for now) but I don't think there's a better man with a Krag Jorgenson in his hands, than Charles Isaac USMC.  ;D

It will be at the MO State Shoot at Branson, MO, Oct 22-25 and the NCOWS Convention in March 2010 as a recruiting tool. If you are going to be there, shoot in uniform and come visit the Gripmaker tent to see it and here more about the Muster.

If you can get away one more weekend, bring it up to C.O.W.S.' Hanging Tree Shootout this Sunday!

I was wondering about the stages.

Does the GAF have recommended distances for the tagets? What was used at the Muster?

How many stages, and what was the pistol/ rifle round count?

Freeda Bee Mee thanks all of you for getting me out of the house for the Muster. While I was gone, they came down with the flu, so with me being gone, I am healthy enough to take care of both her and Pooper Trooper. Thus, not much time for pics. I will definately try to get them up this weekend tho.

Would rather miss a shoot than watch fire shoot out of the ground as it winds its way towards a high-dollar investment. Still planning to be at Branson next week. Hope it is warm as I kinda miss those 90s in October

Garry Owen!

There were ten stages planned, but by mutual agreement due to the weather we only shot four on Saturday and but two on Sunday. The range was about 5 miles+ or so from Ft. Hartsuff, and we went back to the Fort for lunch each day to warm up and fill bellies, which also ate up time in the middle of the day. Everything seemed to take a little longer to get going, we were all moving in slow motion.

Seems the pistol targets ranged from 5 yds. to 20 yds., and the rifle probably 25 yds. to 50 yds., with an occaisional long shot of maybe 200 yds. thrown in.

Figure 10 pistol and ten to 15 rifle per stage. Some stages had targets to earn bonus points off your time score, and a few had interesting actions, like fixing bayonet and stabbing an enemy (had to wipe blade on the foe or be penalized), or carrying a wounded man with you as you worked through the stage.

Sir:

I have the honor to submit my report following the 2009 Grand Muster of the Grand Army of the Frontier.

I moved into my temporary quarters at Fort Hartsuff Thursday 8 October afternoon only to have my presence required at near Willow Springs on Thursday evening. I returned to Fort Hartsuff Thursday evening at approximately 21:30. The Texas contingent had arrived Wednesday evening. The most of rest of the men arrived late Thursday afternoon and evening.

Friday morning the men breakfasted on a hearty breakfast of biscuits and gravy that Delmonico had prepared. The men departed for the scout by buggy, buckboard or whatever other means available. Upon arrival at the sight of the anticipated action, operations commenced with the long range rifle and long range pistol matches which ran concurrently. The match was found to be quite challenging as the top shooter only managed 11 hits out of 15 shots. The men fared better on the long range pistol course and the top place had to be decided in a sudden death tie breaker as Col. Diamond and Lt. Col. Cherry Lake Jake each cleaned the match. In the end Lt. Col. Cherry Lake Jake took top honors. At noon Captain Delmonico brought a hearty meal of stew to the Army’s field headquarters. Following the mid-day break the men found themselves occupied with the Wild Bunch side match. After setting targets the command returned to the barracks. After restoring ourselves with an outstanding evening meal we busied ourselves with preparations for the coming day’s action and renewing old acquaintances.

During the night one of the Texicans gleefully reported that during a trip to the latrine he had discovered that it was snowing… heavily! After comments questioning the Texas contingent’s intelligence and or sanity the men returned to sleep to rest for what promised to be a strenuous and cold two days. We awoke the next morning to nearly 6” of snow.

I had deemed it necessary to divide the command into three nearly equal columns in the hopes that we might engage the hostiles in a pincers movement. This proved impractical as the resultant columns were below full strength. I therefore divided the third column between the first two and we pitched in. At noon we retired to the barracks to warm ourselves with a cup of hot coffee and a fine meal by Delmonico and his assistant Rick. Following the meal we returned to the field and the men performed admirably. At the end of the day we placed the next day’s targets and returned to the post to prepare for photos and the banquet. Following a grand meal the bounteous door prizes were awarded. Each of the participants received at least 2 door prizes. I should here express my gratitude to the members of the door prize committee consisting of Major River City John, Lt. Col. Capt. Larry Little, Major Bow View Haymaker, Lt. Col. Mustang Gregg. Their tireless effort resulted in an almost unbelievable number of prizes. Following the distribution of the door prizes a few speeches were made including one by my Sgt. Major, Texas Sarge explaining the benefits of the site of the upcoming 2010 Grand Muster in Lockhart Texas.

Sunday morning we once again launched into action in spite of temperatures that were once again in the low 20’s. The snow greatly impeded our progress and we were not able to complete all 10 planned stages. We returned to Fort Hartsuff and dined together again one last time. While the men policed up the barracks and surrounding area Lt. Col. Tagalon and I totaled the scores, which are as follow:

Brigade Champion:
(Bvt.) Col. Drydock (1st place Mil-Spec. repeater, 1st place dress Uniform)
I would like to also congratulate here, Cherry Lake Kate from the Division of Minnesota. While her uniform was superb and her shooting was outstanding (she had 4 clean stages) she was unable to dislodge Col. Drydock from his place atop the Brigade Champion standings due to, at least in part, the fact that her 2 wins were uncontestedand therefore earned only 8 points instead of the full 10. Some time back some concern was raised that a woman would not ever be able to win an Iron Trooper. I believe Kate’s accomplishments should have dispelled that myth.

The Division of Missouri won the Division Plate race. Col. Dydock lead the way for the Division by winning both the Mil-Spec. repeater and dress uniform contests.

The Battle Rifle Classes continue to grow and gain in popularity. It was very gratifying to see the strides made by the men and women of the Grand Army of the Frontier in terms of equipping themselves with Battle Rifles and historically accurate uniforms. Of the nearly 30 participants, only about 20 percent participated in the scout classes. Just four short years  ago everyone except Col. Robson completed the course of fire with Lever guns. Now battle rifles out number the standard cowboy guns by nearly 5 to one.
I personally enjoy unique matches, ones that allow participants to do or see something that they won’t get to experience anywhere else. This year’s match allowed that if for no other reason than the opportunity to shoot in greatcoats and fur caps.
It has been my honor and privilege to serve the Grand Army of the Frontier as the Grand Muster director the last two years, but I look forward to next year’s match at Lockhart Texas.

I was on an inspector tour of the Arizona Territory immediately after the Grand Muster so had to wait until today to read the results.  I fully concur with Lt Col Drydock's assessment.  The number of uniforms and military issue longarms was simply amazing and without any doubt indicates the GAF is here to stay.  I'm already planning for next year's Grand Muster - and will probably drive just so I can take a sufficient number of firearms (flying is such a royal pain now).

Col Davenport,

An excellent report on the 2009 Grand Muster.  It'll serve you well when you come up for promotion in a few years.

I can only add that I had an excellent time myself, though I had to leave before the Grand Muster was completed, and I also look forward to the next Grand Muster in Texas.  Based on discussions heard both at the Grand Muster and in the Barracks, I fully expect to see even more battle rifles and uniforms in evidence.

Being able to use an original Army barracks for the Muster was a real priviledge and one that I expect we'll not be able to do again for some time to come.

As always, Delmonico's meals were a real treat and he and his assistant (whose name I can't remember and must apologize for) did excellent service.

With so many excellent uniforms in appearance, we seriously need to begin considering awarding 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for both the field and dress uniform competitions at future Grand Musters, as well as establishing a more formal grading system so that everyone knows what is expected.  Col Rattlesnake Jack, Lt Col Drydock, and yourself have all set the standard that needs to be achieved to become a  Brigade Champion.

Well done for putting on an outstanding Grand Muster.

...I know the National Muster goes to Texas next year, but we're going to do something here, too.  Planning is already in progress!

Ned,

We have always encouraged each Department to hold a Department Muster.  This would allow those who can't travel to a Grand Muster to still be able to shoot a GAF style match.

Eventually, what I'd like to do is get every Department to hold its own Muster, with one of them being designated as the Grand Muster so that the Grand Muster is held periodically in each Department.

Returning to the "Muster photos" aspect of this thread, here are a number of images from the Sunday shooting -

Although the thermometer purported to tell us that it was actually warmer than the previous day, lack of sunshine and the fairly strong wind made the conditions much less enjoyable -

I'm sure glad you got a photo of "Water Carrier Ravine". I'm kind of proud of that stage. It's one you won't see every day in the CAS world.

For those who weren't here, all of the stages were based on MoH or Victoria Cross engagements. This particular stage was written in memory of Blacksmith Henry Mechlin's MoH action at Water Carrier Ravine on the Little Bighorn. The 10 "shoot" targets were to be engaged nearest to furthest and then back to the nearest with care taken to not hit the 2 water carriers (the 2 blue targets)

Actually, all the Sunday shooting photos were taken by Roger ......  Unfortunately, he (or his camera) did not perform well in cold and/or low-light conditions.  The shooting images I posted were about all I could salvage from the total number of photos he has given me  - almost all of which were very dark, or blurred ... or both.  (Apparently, there were many others that were totally hopeless, which he didn't even bother to copy to the disc he gave me.)  As it was, I had to work quite extensively with the ones I posted to brighten and/or sharpen them up.

(I think the problem is Roger and not his camera, frankly - even when he uses my camera the shot is usually messed up ....   :-\ )

In that vein, below is the only image he got of me on Saturday evening.   That is the best I can make it look .....  Did anyone get a good full-length shot of me in my re-vamped Highland dress uniform, by any chance?  (As I mentioned in earlier postings, it has been changed to the 5th Royal Scots of Canada, from the British Black Watch regiment of the same era, with different patterns of sporran, stockings, gold lace, etc. .... and by extensive re-badging  ......

FWIW, I'm also attaching a rather poor shot (cropped from a much larger picture) of my new Pattern 1881 helmet plate, configured for the 5th Royal Scots of Canada -

Here are some photos from the Saturday banquet.  (For some reason, today I can't get a post to load here with links to photos in my PhotoBucket account, so I am reverting to the option of uploading them here, though the size-limit per message will undoubtedly require several postings

The only other photo of Roger's which turned out is attached to this message, followed by others I got -

Every time I try and post a pic from the event the forum tells me the attachment is too large.

Photobucket sized to 640X480 works the best, they have to be under 100k to attach.  If you E-mail them I'd be glad to use my photobucket account and post them for you.

Actually, for attaching photos directly to a message here, the limits are:

- maximum size of 150 KB per image

- maximum of four images per message

- total of all attachments cannot exceed 350 KB per message

You need to determine the file size of the images you are trying to attach. If you are trying to use them as they came off the camera, they are undoubtedly much too large.  In fact, high-resolution digital photos can be several megabytes in size - i.e. potentially hundreds of times too large for posting on this forum.  However, you can save smaller versions  - for example, mine on this thread are a maximum of 750 pixels wide - at much lower resolution (no more than 150 or so is necessary for computer display) and attach those to your messages.

(You don't necessarily want to erase your original high-resolution image files, however - if you want to make prints .... especially of a detail cropped from the full-size image ..... you need all the original data for best quality.)

Any recommendations for a photo resizer(preferably a free one) for my vista laptop? I use the powertoys one on my desk top pc, but it's running XP. I tried to use the "powertoys image resizer clone for vista" but for some reason my computer can't open the install file.

For me, it's better to have the smaller thumbnail size pics, than post the full size ones. I can't vew most of them if there's lots of big pics. Living in the country has lots of advantages, but super slow dial up isn't one of them!

You can resize by making a copy, opening it in paint go to "image" then attributes and set it to a smaller size.

Did anyone happen to pick up a gray 3 ring at the muster by accident. I had some records in it that I really need and I haven't been able to find it since I got home.

What's it worth to ya?!!  Seriously, you left it in my pickup.  There were a couple of clipboards, too.

;D Well, let's see... a silver bar..a 3 ring binder. Hmmm...yep that should be about an even trade ;)

Thanks I was starting to think I must have lost my mind as well ast the binder. I'll pick it up some time when I'm in Ord.

I picked up the targets the other night but with the topper on my pickup it made it hard to pick up the stands or tables.

Cactus Rope, This native Texican don't like snow at all, period. I was born in the Texas Panhandle and lived there and the Oklahoma Panhandle until 1972. I saw enough snow to last me a lifetime. We had a blizzard up there in 1957 and we had 8 ft drifts of snow around our house. I moved to the D/FW area and we've only had snow of a measurable amount about 2 or 3 time since 72.

Yeppers I remember one of those 2 or 3 times. If memory serves me I believe it was 1980 or 1981, New Year's eve. Just moved from Omaha, Nebraska to Plano. Ice storm with 11 inches of snow. Stayed home and watched it on TV, what a hoot. I sure wasn't going to get out there with those CRAZY folks. ;D ;D

Cactus Rope, I have spent almost 40 years as a Cop and have worked numerous accidents around the Metrroplex. These folks around here are non-drivers when the weather is bad. I'm not going to miss having to do that this winter.

I was visiting my mom near Tucumcari NM Thanksgiving 1996, and a snow/ice storm hit the west half of the Panhandle that Friday.  I left for Oklahoma CIty Sunday morning - I40 was clear all the way to Glen Rio (Tex/NM border) then SOLID ICE all the way to Amarillo.  Took me almost 6 hours to go 100 miles.  Lotta wrecks on the side - mostly 4WD (on ice, that just means you have 4 wheels spinning, not just 2)  Seems Texas didn't have any snowplows (?) - they were actually bringing them down from Nebraska.  Freeway was clear east of Amarillo, and I made it back to OKC before sundown.

They have snowplows in Amarillo to keep that stretch of I40 open in and out of New Mexico and east to Oklahoma. I don't miss that stuff. They had a blizzard come through there this spring and over 3,000 head of cattle froze to death.  I would rather have the hot weather than the snow anytime.

TL,   Was through Laredo just after New Years a couple years ago and there was still 5" of snow on the ground and confused people everywhere. If you want to see "non drivers" you should have been there.

I'm always amazed when we get snow or ice.  I work an eight county area north off I-80 and we might get one or no wrecks in that whole area.  Meanwhile the guys on the Big Road spend a ten hour shift going from one wreck to another.  Most all of them are due to "driving too fast for conditions".

What amazes me Ned, is your area is also full of curves, hills, and dropoffs, that you should be getting some accidents, but the Big Road is flat, wide, and full of nuts.
When its icy or bad conditions, I am usually working, pushing snow, etc, but if I am traveling, its time to get off of the Nut Highway.
Imagine if a giant squirrel starting dropping half of those nuts up there in your area!

Christmas 2004 in Cotulla, TX which is about an hour north of Laredo.  My Mom-in-law said it was the first time it snowed at the ranch in 40 years.  The deer, Axis, turkeys, javelina & hogs didn't know what to think with all that cold, wet white stuff everywhere!

Drydock, I grew in the Texas Panhandle and I lived there and the Oklahoma Panhandle. It can snow up there anytime after Labor Day. We hardly ever get snow in the MetroPlex, we only get Ice. No one can drive on Ice. Usually, by the end of October, the temp. has cooled down. I know that there is a Best Western there in Lockhart and a couple of good places to eat BBQ.

For those who were at the muster when I had to leave early, heres the update on my parents.

They are doing much better.  Both home now.  Both still have to use walkers to get around though.
Dad is recovering really well and getting around great, but still has to were a neck brace for awhile yet.  He gets dizzy spells but one of the Docs says that could be from all the different meds he is on.  He probably won't be driving anymore and that will be an adgustment.
Mom is doing well also but it's slower going.  the has a broken ankle and wrist as well.  This makes geting around and doing things harder.  She is also going through alot emotionaly and that will take longer to heal.

thanks for the good wishes.
