However, the Ruger Vaquero was a little on the large size to feel truly comfortable in my hands. I had always said that if Ruger would scale the Vaqueros down to Colt-size, that I'd buy one.
Last winter a couple of my shootin' pards bought new sets of the New Vaqueros and let me try them out. To make a long story short, I bought a brace of consec. serial numbered, short .45s in SS the following week. While it has taken some getting use to not having the 4 clicks, I really like these a lot and are my primary match guns now. So, I joined the ranks of cowboy shooters using Rugers. For a tough reliable sixgun for CAS, they are hard to beat.
I respect the fact that Ruger has about the best customer service I have ever heard of, and listens to the needs of Cowboy Action Shooters. The Ruger Vaquero is evidence of that, and the New Vaquero is even more evidence.
Yeah, I'd say I'm happy being a Ruger shooter. :)

One sunny summer afternoon I decided that I wanted more power from the ROA. I'd tried putting all the FFFg under a conical that would still allow the cylinder to turn. Pretty impressive, but I wanted more. I had a can of pan priming powder from a pard that quit shooting his flint lock front stuffer rifle. The can was worn, but I knew what it held. So, I charged up the ROA with a good compressed charge of FFFFg under conical bullets.
Then, I put up some of them empty beverage cans and had at it. First shot had impressive roar and recoil. The can took a dead center hit. And, the hammer was OPEN on the ROA. The blowback had blown the cap off and the hammer open. I pulled the trigger again and BOOM. Same thing. Second can suffered a fatal wound. Then, I noticed blood dripping off my glasses. The caps had hit me in the forehead and blood was running.
I didn't empty the last four chambers by shooting them. I pulled the bullets, scooped out the powder and cleaned the gun.
That's one strong gun. Also, one dumb but learning shooter. I never repeated that experiment and never will. Thanks to the glasses I didn't loose my eyes. Things could have been worse.
So, now you know the story of the semi-auto ROA. I wonder if I'd held the trigger back if it might not have gone full auto???
That same gun is in the photo below, along with a matching companion. It now goes to SASS matches with either a Kirst Konverter cylinder or the original C&B cylinder, depending on my mood. These ROAs have a balance and feel that my big hands love. The brass backstraps and squareback trigger guards are a joy to the eye.
I have other Ruger guns, but this is my first one. All are good, but the original ROA has a special place in my heart.

I bought my first Ruger back in 1966, it was a Single Six Convertable, that gun has had thousands of rounds thru it and put lots of meat on the table. I've bought several Rugers since then, I guess, or should I say I know I can depend on them to come thru when needed, I've always had a big love for the Colt 1873 , this gun just fit my hand right , and felt like it was part of my arm, so to speak, back in the day of quick draw , this is what I used the most. When Ruger came out with there Ruger Vaquero, I thought this was a big Plus for Ruger , but I still found the OMV didn't quit feel as good in the hand as my Colts , and then a few years ago, Ruger came out with the New Model Vaquero, and SHA-ZAM, they got it RIGHT, it FEELS like my Colts and I love the new hammer, my thumb picks it up every time or the hammer picks up my thumb , just know I REALLY LIKE IT , They also did a bang up job on fit and finish , I got the stainless steel Vaquero's, and they shine like the nickel, the lock up and timming is right on ,and they point and shoot like the left and right arms of God, an this is right out of the box. The only thing I've done to them is to add Eagle Gunfighter Grips, in the Ultra Ivory. You just Gotta Love These Guns.
I call these Vaquero's my BIONIC Colts, You just can't beat them, here's a picture of them.

No pictures because it's being professionally stripped of the black stuff before being sent to Ruger for factory refinishing. Once I get it back it will get "ivory" grips with gold-colored Ruger medallions.
Over 42 years old and probably less than two boxes of ammo through it. Still mechanically tight as a new gun.

Anyways i came home all ready to go and found a local shooting club 17 miles from me who where just starting CAS so i joined that night and ordered a pair of New Vaqueros in 38/357 blued and case hardened now get this at £500.00 each thats $1000.00 each in US dollars but you only get what you pay for.
I went back to EOT in 2007 with all the gear and competed man it was fun and while i was there i got action jobs done on my Vaqueros by Bob Mundon. My wife Tart N Terror has now caught the bug and is going with me to EOT 08 so looks like another pair of Vaqueros on the way.

My third gun was a Ruger, back in 1976. It was in a rack with 10 other rifles, all model 10-22s. However, one drew my eyes right to it. The walnut was just prettier; the metal seemed a bit shinier and it had "Made In The 200th Year Of American Liberty" written on the side of the barrel. I had to have it! A few years later I heard about a new snubbie that Ruger was making, the Speed Six. They were available with a short barrel (long, too) and available in Stainless Steel. I paid 50% MORE than suggested retail and got one of the first ones in Indiana or Kentucky. (I was living in Indiana and stationed at Ft. Knox, KY. at the time.) During these years, the 80s, I bought another 10-22.
Well, fast forward to the mid 90s. I always wanted a single action sixgun and the news was out about the Vaquero. I also heard about the "new" shooting sport, CAS - including SASS and NCOWS, to name 2 organizations. Well, 5 Vaqueros in 2 different calibers later, here we are in 2008.
I still have most of those Rugers. ;)

The next Rugers to bless my hands were my CAS revolvers. I was using a Uberti Millenium and borrowing another one from my dad to shoot CAS with. My wife, Freeda Bee Mee, did a sneaky trick, and got me out to the gun dealer on false pretense. See, she knew I wanted a new set of revolvers, and preferred the bulletproof Rugers over the clones.
Well, as we were sitting in the shop, she just grabbed a pair of gray Ruger boxes, popped them open and started looking. I glanced at her very, VERY, nervously as she RIPPED open the bags inside. I mean, these are somebody else's pistols she is tearing into. She kept shoving them towards me, then finally said Happy Birthday! Boy, was I dumbfounded. Here was a pair of Stainless Steel Birdshead Vaquero's, consecutive numbered, in 45LC. It was a dream come true.
I have since worked on them a little, as far as lighter springs and polishing, and have added Gunfighter grips of rosewood. They are still a ball to shoot, and can be pretty quick shootin 45s. Thanks Freeda!
My next Ruger is hopefully going to be an SP-101 in 357 for concealed carry. That, or a Ruger Old Army. Always did want one of those! Thanks Ruger, and thanks Freeda!

It's about Ruger Old Army pistols. I have 3 pair and one pair happens to be stainless steel 5 1/2" barreled smoke throwing,
flame belching shooting irons that like the Energizer bunny, just keep going.
I take these wascally wascals whenever I travel to larger matches. Not long ago I shot the Gunfight Behind the Jersey Lilly
with this pair of Old Armys. I showed up with clean as a whistle pistols and commenced to start in on main match. Shot six stages and then had a bite to eat. Then I shot the night BP shoot and that was four stages. I was tired, but the Ruger Old Armies never knew the difference. The next morning I gave them a treat and gave them a little oil on the pins and hands. I then shot six more stages. That is eighty shots from each pistol and I am proud to say I had no pistol misses for the match. To me that is what it takes to shoot cap and ball and be in the running. Total reliability. No cap jams, no indexing issues, no fouling out, nothing. The ROAs can be shot right out of the box. Their nipples accept #10 caps and the hammer springs are totally reliable. That is what it takes. By the way, I should mention I was shooting true blackpowder and not a sub. However, I was shooting a big lubed El Paso Pete bullet and that provided the necessary lube to keep accuracy and performance the same the entire match. I gave the Old Armys a good cleaning upon getting home on Monday. They did their thing.
Just in case you think this is a load of road apples, it so happens that our own Marshal Halloway documented my shooting the night shoot and the final twelveth stage with his trusty video camera. That video can be seen here on CAS City. As for no maintence, trust me, it is true.
That is the reason I shoot Ruger Old Army pistols. Not quite in a nutshell, but that is my story.

I "rented" an OMV at the range. I held it, loaded it, shot it. and then repeated said process several times. I still have that first target, best shootin I've ever done with a pistol and I also have that very gun even though it was "not for sale".
Oh, I also used it to shoot a man in Reno just to watch him die...

It's Wednesday night !
That means it's "Shirt Pickin' Time".
My 6 yr old Granddaughter, Ashley, is staying all night with me tonight and I told her that we needed to go in and start the program to pick the winners. She got all excited and ask if she could pick.
So since there wasn't a whole lot of names in the computer.. I took all the names that haven't won yet..
wrote them on piece's of paper.. we folded them up each one exactly the same.. and then we put them in a bowl and she stirred and she stirred and she stirred.
Finally she was ready ..
so I held the bowl up and she picked 2 names out of the blue popcorn bowl. ( Hey... nothing less then high class in OUR 'pick the winner' booth. LOL)

In 1993, when CAS and I were younger than we are now, and the Vaquero had just showed up on the market, I decided that it was the game for me, so my dear old dad, rest his soul, and I went out to the local gun store, and I bought myself a Vaquero. It was a polished stainless beauty with a 7 1/2" barrel, and I decided that I was most likely the fastest gun alive! I bought a cheesy rig, and went plinking a couple of times. Then, sadly, life got in the way, the Vaquero went in the drawer, and didn't think much about it for most of the rest of the decade.
In 2001 the time had finally come for me to start shooting some steel with that dear old revolver, so I hauled her out of the drawer again. By this time I had bought a companion for her and my father-in-law, Martin Riley, leatherworker extraordinaire, had provided me with a gorgeous, silver mounted, two-gun rig. I looked good. No one knew then that I was about as slow as molasses in the winter. I approached the line and when the buzzer sounded, I drew. Every single time I cocked that first Vaquero, the timing missed and the cylinder ended up halfway between the next two chambers! It was a nightmare. The revolver would cycle adequately when plinking, and taking my time to cycle it successfully, but, when cocked aggressively, it would absolutely not work.
So, nine years after I bought the original revolver, I packed it up and shipped it back to Ruger. Within a week and a half, they shipped it back to me, and it was pristine! The put a new cylinder in it, marked with compatible numbers and sent it back. Best customer service EVER!

Bring back the Old Army!! I have coveted a pair of them short barreled Ruger Old Armies in SS ever since I saw Howdy's. Beautiful and reliable revolvers, iff'n you remember to put bullets in them. ;D

OK, I had Heidi's digital camera and trying to take pictures at a monthly up north at Murrieta Posse shoot. I wanted to get as many shooters as I could, since a pard called Sauerkraut had a website and could post pics on it. I was roaming around to the other posses and got back to mine and someone, probably Champaign Charlie, tells me it is my time to shoot. I grab my shotgun and rifle and head for the loading table, where with all the confidence in the world, I load my rifle and cap my Ruger Old Armies. I am gonna blaze this stage, if I can only remember the scenario. My turn to shoot and I remember it was Black Jack Traven timing. Shooter ready? Yup answers I. Standby! Beep! I yank my first hogleg and it goes poof, piff, piff. I yank number two and again, poof, piff, piff. Yup, I had forgotten something. Like to put some powder and ball in the chambers of both guns. DUH! Well, I slunk over to the unloading table and luckily no one got hurt. I say that because, the whole danged posse was in contortions and holding their sides from laughing so much. Some where even rolling in the dirt. Now you can laugh too. If you laugh too much, then I will have to give you a payback though. So, don't tell anyone about this or I will be the laughing stock at every match I go to from now on. Whats that you say? I already am the laughing stock anyway. ;D ;D ;D
BJT gave me a reshoot, since nothing went down range except my pride and dignity. ;D

Thanks Chuck, she loves the birdshead frames. I'll get her hands on one for a trial run, but the gut tells me we have a winner here. She has some health issues as well (enough to keep her away from the .30-30) so for the long term, it seems like the perfect caliber.

I have kinda small hands, and I like the Birdhead grip, too. When I bought my last Vaquero, it was still back when they were all the bigger versions. Mine was a special run from the factory (of 5000 if I recall) that was a kind of test version with a 3 3/4" (3.75") short barrel that had the standard grip - they called it a Sheriff's Model. The gun is polished Stainless, 45 Colt and the white factory grip had no Ruger Medallion, rather the Ruger symbol was "scrimshawed" (laser etched) on it and pretty large. VERY handsome. At this time, there were NO Birdhead Vaqueros released - perhaps rumored, but not yet released. Anyhoo, I found a company called Qualite' that had a DIY (do-it-yerself) brass B-head grip conversion, made of brass. I chose brass over the stainless they offered and with a set of white Hogue grips. Lemme tell you - that gun - when polished up and gleaming, is REAL purdy! (IMHO, of course. ;) ) This grip has a slightly different contour than what Ruger eventually released, about 1-2 years later.
Here it is with an 1890s Iver Johnson topbreak in 38 S&W. (Yes, the one piece grip on the Iver J IS a factory "target" grip and is VERY comfortable to hold and shoot! And no - it has snap caps in it, not loaded rounds. :D )

I'm proud of ya! Savin' rain forests and American woodlands and swamps and critters are (is) important. But NOT at the expense of common sense! The PETA folks need to learn how the food chain really works ... as God intended. (NOT that I have an exclusive line on what the Big Guy means, don't ya know. ;) ) They seem to forget that people are actually part of nature and that we're omnivores, NOT strictly herbivores, like some of God's critters!

I just got home from a long day on a job site an guess what was waitin for me on the door step? 8)
The quality of this shirt is incredible, but what else could we expect from anything with the Ruger monicker on it! As stated by one of the other lucky winners it is dang near a jacket. The recoil pad on the right shoulder is a very nice touch. Thanks for the rush mail service, it really made my day.

Guess I'm just lucky to have avoided those X's all these years. People by me XL shirts as gifts and it's all I can do not to say, "thanks for the nightshirt". :-\

My daughter, Litlle Miss, is now hooked on centerfire as well. She looks at the old .22 like it's a BB gun-wants nothin to do with it anymore. I'm proud but I sure miss those cheap 525 round boxes!

Now mind you, I have a gun safe with multiple "other" Ruger items.
Went to a gun show here in East Texas..Started looking at the pistolas. I bet I passed up a dozen Rugers cause I was lookin for that click,click,click,click that pertains to other shootin irons.
Anyway, walked up and laid my hands on a case hardened, blue/black AWA. It was everything that a cowboy gun should be...
I played with. I loved on it, gave it all kinds of special attention....
Now remember I'm no stranger to Rugers....I took the AWA out to shoot and within minutes of firing shots out of it, I knew instantly that I had picked up the wrong gun...kinda like pickin the wrong woman...but that's another story.. ;)
The gun show came back to town...I took the AWA to the show...made an outright sale of the AWA and turned the cash into a brand new RNV 5.5 SS....it was love at first shot....
Well now that there are two pistols required for SASS/CAS I was left with a dilema..I had to find me another one...I did just that
now I'm sporting (in place of courting) twin sisters..and boy are they sweet..
Now there is one part of this story, that I haven't told...The AWA was bought for me, by my wife as birthday present.
When I made the call to buy the Ruger..I called her from the Gun show...and told her that I just couldn't see me not shooting the Ruger....she understood, and she understands me... ;)
so Marshall'ette..if'n there's a shirt somewhere there available, I'll be asking you to send one not to me, but to my loving and most graciously understanding wife...she deserves it. :)

Yep. I filled my first elk tag the week before, and I was not as pleased as when my son dropped this first deer. :D It's all about the memories.

An when he moves on to elk it'll be another wonderful experience for the both of you. Teachin him the difference in tracking an learning the patience that can last seasons rather than days due to the brains them things have. The boys got the bug fer sure now an I think you have a hunting pard for life ;D

I own lotsa Rugers. Love them for their performance, reliability, and value. A Ruger was my first rifle (a 10-22 - still a favorite) and my first handgun (a 6" RSP.) I currently own just one Ruger Single Action: a 7.5" Super Blackhawk in 44 Mag. But, the Vaqueros in .357 are coming!

Back in 68 I decided to grow up (18 year old) and moved to Alaska. Got a job working forthe Air Force and bought a 12 ga single shot to do some rabbit hunting. Well it did not take to long before I realized I needed to get something for the bears and being 18 I decided I needed a magnum handgun to carry. Bought a Ruger 357, western belt and holster and was ready when I went out hunting with my 12 ga. It was not until much later that I learned how much trouble I would have been in with that 357 if I ever sis run into one. Ended up buying 2 more Rugers in Alaska and all together in my years I must have bought close to a hundred of different calibers, rifles and revolvers. Currently have 15 in my safe all revolvers except for a 96/44 lever. Put a peep sight on it and it makes a good close deer rifle. I went through 14 pairs ov different RVs until I ended up with the three pair I am keeping. May add a set of 45 7.5s in the future. DO I like Ruger? Sure do, just wish I had the dollars to by one of the SxS and cut it down, but can not do that.

2nd Toe: You've got to tell Ruger to put those shirts on their website store. I went there with a credit card all ready to be melted. I was going to buy two: his and Her Majesty's. But -- NOTHING. Just some cheesy t-shirts. Ruger is missing a HUGE bet by not allowing their faithful to show their Ruger Pride!

We were cleanin the boy's 10/22 this mornin an I started diggin thru all the paper that came with gun lookin for the manual. I expected to see my shirt in all the catalogs that were in the box an there was nothin but a bunch of tee shirts. I don know how M'ette swung this, but the drawing is DEFINATELY worth entering.

It was the mid 70's and as boys are wont to do, I was playing in a dirt lot just diggin up ground to make BMX jumps. I found an old cigar box in the ground that turned out to have a Ruger Single Six .22 in it. (I have since dated it to 1958 by the serial number) One of the old black plastic grip panels had a chip in it, and at some point someone had put an XR3-Red grip frame on it (DAMN them!) and sanded it down to the aluminum. Other than that, it was pretty tight.
I had been growning up firing guns and had a .22LR bolt rifle and an old single-shot .410ga back at the house, so I kept this little beauty hidden for quite some time until my ol' grandpap caught me with it. True to his rascally self, he kept my secret but sent it off to Ruger for that dreaded conversion to the transfer bar system.
Since then I have purchased 2 more 3-screw Singel Six .22's, neither older than 1962, as well as 5 more OM Vaqueros all in .45 (2 7 1/2" stainless, 2 5 1/2" CC'd and 1 4 5/8's stainless) Also have a blued GP-100 in .357mag
For rifles I have an older 10/22 and 2 Mini-14's. One standard rifle blued with the Rosewood stock and one stainless ranch rifle, with the factory folder.

Back before there was a SASS I bought a Ruger. It is the Ruger Old Army. I've shot deer with it, rabbits, heads off partridge and uncountable former receptacles of fermented malt beverages. I shot round balls and conicals but was never impressed with the accuracy of the second cylinder full without cleaning. But, that's another story. I'm getting ahead of myself here.what did you have in that can ? I have shot ffffg 40 grains with both conical and round in my ROA for years with no problems just a lot of smoke and a lot of bang. you had better check your can!
One sunny summer afternoon I decided that I wanted more power from the ROA. I'd tried putting all the FFFg under a conical that would still allow the cylinder to turn. Pretty impressive, but I wanted more. I had a can of pan priming powder from a pard that quit shooting his flint lock front stuffer rifle. The can was worn, but I knew what it held. So, I charged up the ROA with a good compressed charge of FFFFg under conical bullets.
Then, I put up some of them empty beverage cans and had at it. First shot had impressive roar and recoil. The can took a dead center hit. And, the hammer was OPEN on the ROA. The blowback had blown the cap off and the hammer open. I pulled the trigger again and BOOM. Same thing. Second can suffered a fatal wound. Then, I noticed blood dripping off my glasses. The caps had hit me in the forehead and blood was running.
I didn't empty the last four chambers by shooting them. I pulled the bullets, scooped out the powder and cleaned the gun.
That's one strong gun. Also, one dumb but learning shooter. I never repeated that experiment and never will. Thanks to the glasses I didn't loose my eyes. Things could have been worse.
So, now you know the story of the semi-auto ROA. I wonder if I'd held the trigger back if it might not have gone full auto???
That same gun is in the photo below, along with a matching companion. It now goes to SASS matches with either a Kirst Konverter cylinder or the original C&B cylinder, depending on my mood. These ROAs have a balance and feel that my big hands love. The brass backstraps and squareback trigger guards are a joy to the eye.
I have other Ruger guns, but this is my first one. All are good, but the original ROA has a special place in my heart.

Once I had been shooting for a couple of years I started doing my own reloading and switched to .45 caliber. My first purchase for the transition was to purchase 2 Ruger Bisley Vaqueros in Stainless. They have been my main match pistols ever since, even when I switched to shooting Black Powder those guns have never failed me.
Hopefully this Christmas I will add a pair of the New Vaqueros to my collection. Ruger will always be a mainstay for me and the conerstone of my main match firearms.

that same ruger later on that summer proved how tough it was when I accedently loaded a hot 44 mag in the 45 and fired it well it was loud and part of a nice group I was shooting soon as I emptered the chambers I saw what had happened the 44 case was spilt from case mouth down to just above the web and rim after I stoped shacking I checke dthe gun out just to make sure I took to local gun smith told Him what had happened and he gave a quick look over and handed it back to Me say "don't worry its a Ruger they can take it " well from that night I have been a huge Ruger fan
I still have that old model and have added a couple 10-22's one is fully tricked out a Butler heavy barrel houge rubber stock big mag release worquaertson trigger and sear and a simmons 4-12 X scope and I have a Ruger #3 in 22 hornet the local ground squierrls hate them and a Mini 14 ranch with peep sight and on my wish list is a 45 bisely 4 5/8 stainless in a matt finish for packing I also have a MK II G model blued and her name is Sara Lee cause nobody doesn't like sara Lee she shoots strait every time I use that gun for training new shooter a girl freind who was a anti gun person I took her out shooting gave her sara lee set up a bulls eyes target at 15 yards first shot she every fired she hit the X not just the X ring the knocked the center out the X printed on the target she went through a brick of ammo that day it was so fun for her by end of the day she was hitting 12 ga hulls at 25 yards about 60 % the time she is a gun nut now
