1872 Army Uniform question
« on: August 25, 2014, 08:27:31 AM »
Gentlemen,
I was looking at on Osprey U.S. Cavalry book, and it shows white cotton trousers of the 1872 pattern.  I can't find any other reference to these.  Was this correct, and if so, where can I find another reference to them?  Thanks!

Dale,
Try looking in "The U.S. Army in the West, 1870 - 1880", page 72. It appears that many cavalry in the southwest wore their stable overalls.

Also try looking in "The Horse Soldier 1776 - 1943" Volume II, by Randy Steffen. He is supposedly the expert on cavalry of the U. S.

Hope this helps.

Hi, Cactus!  I knew about the canvas overalls (makes perfect sense to me) but this Osprey book made it sound as if they are regular trousers, except in white cotton for hot weather.  I'll check out "The Horse Soldier".
