Hi all around !
does anyone think it a problem to load up Ubertis and Pietas wit 33 grains of powder? The recommended load is 30 grains but modern steels are better than the steel used for the older guns. Just thought I'd ask before I blow something up. ;D

30 grains of Clays? Unique? You didn't say. I think that would be bad. ;)
But I know you meant BP, and the modern repros can take all the BP you can fit in the shell.

;D PLUS ONE too Abilene.
Aummmmm why would you want too ::)
-
I know, should have been more specific. BP of course and no shells - it's a model 1860 cap & ball.
"Why would I want too"? I just noticed there is quite some room left in the chambers with 30 gr., so I thought why not load them up to capacity.....

My Good Blackpowder
I am in full agreement with you - fill the chamber nearly full with room for the ball, and dram that ball down.
Some Folks have approached me occasionally over the boom, the smoke, etc, but I just tell them I'm sorry, that's the only measure I have for my powder flask :P

Seriously ? that is like going to "Hooters" and complain about the GIRLS ! ::)

Ah Yup ;D A big PLUS ONE too Major 2 (again) and the good Perfesser!!!
PS: FERGOT!!! Modern built Cap Gun cylinders are made of much sterner stuff than the original Sample Examples. As are the guns themselves. Stuffing the chambers full up is no problem atall.

Roger...gotcha....I'll fill them chambers up and go blasting away. Thanks! ;D ;D

just ensure you still have room for the ball :-)
whilst real BP usually compresses just fine, some substitutes can be either more or less cooperative.
Oh, and if you choose to use pyrodex, use volume for volume substitute, and clean EXCESSIVELY well

If you choose to use Triple 7 you need to reduce more, as it is more engertin emerge makes more boom and pressure ... and clean EXCESSIVELY well
Coffin can clue you in on APP and it's cousin....

That there is funny, I don't care who ya are .... I have to believe (but cannot prove, no sources or footnotes) those folk are usually in the "mouse fart crew"
It is my opninion, which is mine, and belongs to me,that your missive is right up there with Gen Schwartzkopf's quote , describing the problems of coalition-building:
?Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without your accordion.?

My 44-40 loads are around 34 grains of 2f for my pistols and rifles for CAS. I do load some 36 grains of 3f for rifles for higher velocity rounds.
I used to load 45 colt with 34 grains of 2f also although I seldom shoot those anymore and shoot Schofield brass with 28 grains for a more pleasant shooting round.

I loaded mine with 35 grains at first, then later simply filled the chamber to an eighth from the top and seated. Balls were almost flush to front of cylinder and my groups tightened up a bit.
Old Eynsford 3FG was my powder
