Title: US Military Auto Loaders (photos fixed)
Post by: Cowtown Scout on September 05, 2015, 03:55:40 PM
Posted this last week over in the SASS Wire Saloon where some folks were doing a couple fun postal matches, one with M1 Garand and one with M1 Carbine.  Again I know it's beyond our time frame but it's military long arms.

Well I was not able to participate in the shooting Fun Match for either the Garand or the M1 Carbine

However I would like to share some photos of my U.S. Military Long Arms - Auto Loading

Nice collection, Scout! Got me beat-just a Garand and a Carbine here. Some of those others run into some money. M-14s are expensive enough, don't even want to contemplate what a Johnson would cost. I do a few postal matches on Surplusrifleforum, this month I used an SVT-40 and my Lebel- planning on shooting a Carcano and Arisaka to finish out this month's match (theme of the match, Eastern front WWII, Russian Partisans there had access to lots of odd stuff besides just Mosins.)

On another site, I saw an AR-15 that had been fitted with a walnut stock, didn't look half bad!

Similar to that, although that's not where I saw it, probably on Surplusrifleforum or Gunboards. I don't think the one I saw had finger grooves in the forend. I wonder if she shoots left handed? That rifle seems to have a small cheek piece on the right side of the stock.

If I had some money I didn't really need, my collection would need an AR pretty much like Scout's #2 Vietnam era. Pretty much like what the Army let me shoot in the late 70's. Mine was just a standard M-16, but there were a couple in the arms room that were just like Scout's rifle, semi-auto only, no forward assist. (mine did have the forward assist, and the ones we had for basic did too)

But of course, if I had that, then there'd be a "hole" in my lineup where an M-14 or clone should be, between the Garand and the AR.

Mine is a slab sided Colt A1 with a Dec. 1966 or Jan. 1967 Serial number.

Yeah, there's a M-14 sized hole in my collection too, although my collection isn't nearly as extensive as Scout's.

WOW! That really blew my freakin' mind!   All those guns and no M14? ;D

Strangely, I lost a whole gun collection 30 years ago in a house fire. What do you think the first type of rifle I went out and bought was. That's right, an M14! :D

Now it would really blow my mind if Col. Drydock doesn't have one. I just KNOW Col Niederlander does! :D

Nope, don't have one.  And it was my primary carry rifle overseas.  Nice to be able to shoot thru a dhow.  I let the rest of the boat crew carry the poodle shooters . . .

Maybe someday, if I win another Cabela's card.

There was a pretty good Karl and Ian clip where Ian exploits the fatal flaw of John Garand's design and presses the rifle right side first into the mud. Of course it's easy to clear with water if you were to yank out the trigger mech and dip it and the reciever into that puddle that was there.

But for being the first successful full powered battle rifle action, it does pretty good-and it's still in use to this day!

It's always nice to carry a REAL rifle!! :D

Actually, Ned, I think it's a damn clever way of being able to identify your firearms in case of theft!

Yeah, but knowing yours is the useless one isn't so great!  Fortunately, both were fairly easy to fix.

I've found that the fact that he no longer actually owns a firearm is no guarantee that his (former) firearm won't break.  ::)

Oh wait, maybe I souldn't give him too hard a time about breaking firearms as I've done a fair amount of that myself the last couple of years.

Well,... technically neither have I.

There was the time that a case separated in one of my guns, which was interesting, but I wasn't shooting it at the time.

But back to our regularly scheduled program.
Those are beautiful CS! I'd like to get an M1A someday.
