The Darksider's Den / Re: How did we get these "Calibers"?

Abilene,
Are the images still not showing?  If so what are you viewing them on, a phone?  If you can't see them let me know the way they have you copy the link changed on me.

I think my world is level again...the last time we were talking about this was probably 12 or 13 years ago.  You have confirmed what I believed then.  All large caliber R-M and Richards II revolver and frames are larger.  AND the Richards Type II no matter what the caliber are oversized.  Only the R-M .38s (Navy model conversions) are the same size as the Percussion frames and cylinders.  I am speaking in generalities, there are differences but not like the Uberti Richards Type IIs and the large caliber Uberti Richards-Masons conversions.

These are the dimensions from several of mine. Note there is a difference on several of my Navy model Percussion cylinders:

Thank you for all of your help and putting up with me.

I had a ball, even if my back was not cooperating all the time. Big thanks to Books, Mogorilla, and all the KVC folks who put on a sometimes crazy match for us. There were 5 states represented there. I liked the comment Books made after the stage where we had to shoot under a wagon, prone, at increasingly distant targets: ”The knucklehead that wrote this stage won’t do that again!”

Thanks again, KVC

The Darksider's Den / Re: Ballistol?

Been using it for years and it is BP compatible.

For some applications there are much better options.

Straight Ballistol doesn't work well removing hard BP fouling. You need to mix it with water. AKA Moose Milk (1 or 2 parts Ballistol to 9 or 8 parts water)

For cleaning hard BP deposits I find PAM works better than Ballistol and Dawn Power Wash works better still.

I’ve been using black powder for a very long time and water  has been the base of my cleaning with and without additives. A few years ago I heard a lot of chatter about Ballistol  and gave it a try. I had never had a problem with rust on any gun up till then. After using it the bore of my rifle showed rust after it had cleaned with Ballistol. I wouldn’t recommend using it to anyone!

 :)  Froogal   ;)

Depends (no, not the ones in the plastic package).  First a CAVEAT.  I don't like Balistol.  At all.  Well, it's ok to soften stiff boots.  However:

It will work for your purpose (mostly).  I do however, recommend and champion the use of PAM.  Acronym.  Hydrogen Peroxide, Denatured Alcohol and Murphy Oil Soap in equal parts.  I put it in a little spray bottle.  Works a treat.

With PAM, you won't need a bore snake.  Just a squirt down the bore and spritz a patch on the ends of yer rod.  Done.  Put a drink cozy on yer spray bottle.  Hydrogen Peroxide doesn't like direct sunlight.

 :) YEPPER Major 2 ;)

That is a right spiffy match.   I particularly like the finale at the toe.

Something old something new...

I was going through my holster collection and pulled this one out.
I made it probably 12 years or so years ago for an Avenging Angel,
Looks pretty cool with the 642  :)

Does Ballistol work with black powder? Mostly I am curious about using it with a bore snake for quick cleanups between stages if necessary.

I cast for C&Bs, 357/38, & rifled musket minies.
My lube is 50/50 deer tallow/beeswax for everything including smokeless, BP & BP subs
If I'm shooting in hot weather I keep my ammo in the shade or a cooler
