9th Infantry, 1901 Philippines
« on: July 01, 2019, 08:39:52 AM »
This photo was taken after the capture of the "Balangiga Bells" for retribution of the massacre of Co C of the 9th Infantry on the island of Samar, Philippines, 1901.  Half of the 74-man company were killed, including all commissioned offices, while they sat at breakfast in the mess hall.

The soldiers are wearing khaki blouses/jackets, but appears many of the men's trousers are darker than the blouses?  Perhaps the darker brown duck trousers, or even blue?

I don't know what's going on with the guy in the center, to the right of the flag and bell...photo defect, some weird beard/mustache/sideburns, or is he holding his hands up to his face?

The Bells were returned to the City of Balangiga, R.P. in 2018.

Company C of the 9th was stationed at our own Fort Hartsuff in 1881.  I did some research on it, and I believe there were still a couple of soldiers stationed here that were still with the company at Balangiga.  As I recall, they were still Privates.

Note my signature line...
As part of the reprisals against the Insurrectos on Samar, the Army requested a Battalion of Marines to (ostensibly) survey a route for a telegraph line across the island....and to basically destroy and kill anything/anyone they came across:

"I want no prisoners. I wish you to kill and burn; the more you kill and burn, the better it will please me ... The interior of Samar must be made a howling wilderness ..." ? Gen. Jacob H. Smith

A 50-man detachment was sent into the jungle; 10 did not return.

If a Marine veteran of the March Across Samar ("Waller's March") entered the room (usually the Club), he would be rendered a tribute:  "Stand, gentlemen; he served on Samar".

"Stand, gentlemen; he served on Samar"

Photo appears to show some impressive mutton chop side whiskers being sported by the individual in question.

Although may have been against regulations at the time. Do seem to be blurred, but their length, if accurate, would have moved slightly in a breeze. No other part of the image reveals any movement blur, though.

Yes, and if I recall one or two were actually on the "Horse Meat March" 5 years earlier
