Stuck Srews
« on: December 03, 2019, 01:26:50 PM »
Bought another conversion broke it down and cleaned it, was able to remove all screws but the two top back strap screws and the front trigger guard screw. Tried 3/8 impact  with no help, so I took it to a gunsmith that used to work for me and he tried the drill press way, no help. Did everthing Coffinmaker and others have said. Is there anyway I can get them loose without drilling them out? I can't believe someone would put lock tight or JB Weld on the screws, never seen anything like this in 35 years.
Thanks for any help,

I've twisted  the heads off screws before trying to break them loose..
When all else fails,,Use heat,,,The problem with heat is that chances are that you will screw up the finish..I did hear that to loosen loc-tite you can freeze it ,,then try to break the screws loose..

Do you have changeable screwdriver bits? If I have one that won't budge, I'll use the bit and smack it really good with a hammer (I have an old tack hammer that I use) and don't be shy!!  That usually gets their attention!!
Instead of trying to impart heat to the screw (which may screw up the finish) you can heat up the frame area with a hair dryer. You might get lucky!

Just for the heck of it, if you have a "heavy duty" soldering iron, you can heat the screw with that.

I would be concerned some schmuck at some point has introduced RED LocTite to the offending screws.  Normally I apply the "heat" to release red LocTite with a small mini propane torch.  Care must be used of course.

The only "good" part of the situation is there are no threads in the trigger guard nor the backstrap.  The Screw Head can be carefully drilled off, the parts separated, then the remnant of the screw can be gripped with Vice Grips and the frame area around the screw shaft heated.

Some frustrating.  Good Luck.

You might try to put a few drops of acetone on the screw heads and let it soak down into the threads. After a bit, add some heat with a soldering iron. I have done this a couple of times with good success.

ATF also works very well even on rusted in parts.
