Trail Boss through Lee powder dispensers?
« on: June 04, 2019, 03:51:45 PM »
Howdy, have any of you had experience running TB through the Lee disc powder dispensers? I know you need to give it an extra beat or two with Dillons, but what about the Lees? Thanks

I have been using Trail Boss through a Lee powder dispenser since 2011 and have had no problems what so ever.

I don't have a Lee measure. With my Lyman 55, I have to work the handle "smartly", tap once at the up stroke, and "double tap" the handle on the bottom stroke, to be sure it doesn't bridge in the measure.

You may just have to throw and weigh a few charges to find out what is most consistent.

Before i saw the light and did forsake the fad stuff and start shooting the real true Gun]Powder I will freely admit I did use a lot of Trail Boss.
But, and there is always a but, it takes a learning curve to get it to meter properly. At least that was my experience using a Dillon 550B. It seems to go through the measure like slowly falling snow, which we do not have in this part of Texas, however that is what I have been told by people that survive in country where it does snow.
It does measure very exactly once you find the rhythm and is almost impossible to double charge and least in .45 Colt and .45 Cowboy Special cases.
It is a good powder, but you may wind up with lddy biddy grey cherrios all over the bench.

My Lee Auto Drum meters Trail Boss very reliably and precisely.  The Auto Drum beets the Auto Disk hands down.

Thanks, I wonder if the drum model would work in the system I now have. They seem awfully similar in set up.

The Auto Drum will work with any of the Lee Powder-Thru dies.  It will mount exactly the same as your Auto Disk.  The riser is highly recommended.

I use the Lee Auto Disk with Trail Boss on their turret press and have had no problems, have loaded many thousands of rounds.  I do recommend careful weighing to select a disc, their guide is not necessarily accurate!

I have used TB thru a Lee Perfect with no problems.  HOWSUMEVER, I have experienced bridging many times in the Powder Thru die itself.  Constant checking of the case itself is called for,  with a run back up into the die and a tap with a wrench should levels be low.

Here We Go Again .... Marching Down The Avenue ....  I don't shoot Trail Boss.  WaBac (thank Professor and Sherman) when I dabbled in that Heathen Fad Smokeless stuff, I didn't like Trail Boss at all.  I don't even have any on hand (why would I), nor under hand.  I also don't load thru a Lee anything, except my Lee Classic for De-Prime/Prime All Brass 12Ga.  I do all my loading on a pair of Dillon 650s, set up for large and small primers (individually).  SO:

I would be apparent this missive is of no help nor information to the OP what so ever.  Therefore it may be, and should be ignored by all concerned.  I won't be at all affronted should one and all choose to ignore this verbose and useless commentary.  It is after all Sunday Evening and I'm bored.  No .... really ..... I'm bored.

I have had some difficulty with trail boss and other "flake" powders leaking out "one flake at a time" during loading operations.  On ball powders, etc, it works great.   I've viewed some of the you tube videos on "fixes" and tightening up the seals, but I havnt done that.
