Title: 2016 Grand Muster...140th Anniversary of the Battle of Little Bighorn
Post by: Pitspitr on July 08, 2015, 06:40:53 AM
Hopefully this is early enough that everybody can put in for time off now and get it.

I will be hosting the 2016 Grand Muster, June 24th, 25th & 26th, at my farm.

This Muster will be open to anyone in the GAF. If not currently a member I can help you register. (Membership in the GAF is free and easy) By using Google Earth and going to  41°40'16.24"N Latitude and  99°19'42.54"W Longitude you can see the Grand Muster site. Registration forms is attached below and is also available on the dispatches page of the Grand Army's Web site. Particpation will be limited to 40 shooters. Registration is $80,  an extra Sat. eve. banquet ticked is $15. Meals will be available on site from Delmonico. Those wishing to attend but not compete may do so without registration fee, but be sure to pay the meal fee if you plan to eat with us.

The planned activities include: a 4 stage GAF steel target main match, a long range match, a Precision Pistol match and a GAF Expansion Era Match. While 4 stages for the main match doesn't sound like much these four stages will be of the skirmish format and will feature about 20 knock down targets per stage. Stage design will recount scenes from the great Sioux War of 1876 including; Reno's valley fight and Water Carriers Ravine and Last Stand Hill. Round counts will be dependent on the number of times the shooter needs to shoot at each target to get it to fall. 100 rounds at least would be a good plan. This is a match that participants say truly needs to be experienced to be fully appreciated.

Shooters will be able to sight in their rifles on Thursday and Friday afternoon and evening. Sighting in your rifles for the distances used is STRONGLY encouraged.

Long Range Rifle will be 100-300yds. on armor so full power jacketed bullets are fine for it.

This muster will be a primative camping event. We will have a tent city and I have tentage for about 10 individuals if you don't have your own contact me, I can help. We should be easily able to get photos without anything modern in them. We should have plenty of time to sit around the campfire and visit.

The average high temperature in this area on June 27th is 84 degrees

I've attached a FAQ sheet and a suggested equipment list.

It worked really well having the RO's shoot through early this year. I really appreciated your help and would appreciate it again next year!

I plan on showing up Monday next year rather than my normal Tuesday.   When we get closer I'll start a seperate theard so we can keep a head count on how many are going to be there those days.

Smaller groups give me more flexibility to make some different dishes than when we have larger crowds so be thinking of some ideas.

Just to reemphasize, you do not need a uniform to shoot.  You got the guns, you're good to go.  You show up in shorts and a tee shirt, we'll give you a flat cap, call 'em knickers, and make you a very elderly aggressive newsboy!   Check out the 1884 uniform thread for a very easy, affordable uniform.   ;D

As always, anyone who can make it to Omaha by sundown, Wednesday, June 22nd, I'll put you up in my Road Ranch and we can caravan, or double/triple up, on the trek into Sargent the following day. Includes feeding you dinner and breakfast.

If flying into Omaha, I'll pick you up and drop you off at Epply Airport as needed..

....We now return to our regularly scheduled programing.  ;)

I just talked with Theresa at the Wildlife Inn at Taylor and spoke for a few rooms. I cannot emphasize this enough, this is a very big weekend for the motels in the area as it the weekend that the schools at Burwell and Sargent hold all their class reunions. IF YOU THINK YOU MIGHT WANT A MOTEL ROOM CALL AND BOOK IT NOW!
The phone number for the Wildlife Inn at Taylor is 308-942-6234. If they aren't available to take your call leave a message, they will call back.

Pitspitr,
We are a whole year out.  If you could bump the Muster a week later, Mark and I would be better equipped to come again.  First, I cannot camp - too much ortho problems.  Also, it is back to back with the NCOWS National Shoot, which is pretty much mandatory for us Senators and Officers.  Driving 15 hours each way back to back was really rough on us.  Just a thought.  I may  not be able to make it if you cannot bump it a week to avoid the problems with the class reunions and such.  I really liked the Comstock!  And we totally had a great time at the muster 2015!

I understand the problem the timing of the Muster creates for our NCOWS members. We lose Dusty Tagalon every other year for this reason. It seems I'm really between a rock and a hard place on the timing of the Muster. When I first started hosting the Dept. of the Missouri Muster 5 years ago it was in the middle of July. Every year we had to deal with 105+ temps. after a couple of years we voted to move the time up to try to catch a little cooler temperatures. At the time we talked to the NCOWS members who were attending and asked for their thoughts. We ended up selecting the last weekend in June to try to stay as far away from NCOWS Nationals as possible while still staying in June. I can't move it up to May as I work in a school and we don't get out until late May. I can't move it back to August because I'm getting computers ready to go for the next year. If I go to the July 4th weekend I'm not sure I could survive the mutiny at home. We always have several family functions that weekend including one of my daughter's birthday and picnics. My wife feels like her patience with my shooting is stretched to the limit as it is. On the other hand the 4th of July weekend would give folks an extra day to travel and I knew that so I asked my staff for their opinion before you ever mentioned it. They were of the position that if we don't leave it set at the same weekend every year we'll end up losing people because they'll never be sure just when it is. Even if we did change it, it would only be for 1 year as I already have the Comstock booked for 2017.

Well, I don't think it's likely that I'll be able to compete, but if there'd be a tent available, I'd happily pay just for the chance to come out for a day or two, watch, meet everyone, and enjoy a bit of a road trip there and back. Might bring the Missus, if thats okay with you all. I'd likely have a uniform by then, though she'll be in modern civvies.

Sounds like the Wildlife Inn at Taylor is fully booked for the weekend now by GAF members.

If you're still looking for close motels you might want to check with the Crest motel in Taylor at (308) 942-3430

If she who must be obeyed agrees we may be able to make it next year finally.  We want to go to Montana and Alaska with the 5r.  Having a sister in Stevensville Montana, I even have a safe place to stash my guns safely if I do not want to go thru the hassle of doing the canadian and american forms to get them out of the country across canada back in to the US and repeat on the way back.

This is all predicated on an out of sight place to park the 5r and she who wont sleep in a tent or walk to an outhouse in the middle of the night.

Does such a spot exist on the range?

Capt.,

 I can relate & sympathize  :)

The "SHE" Commandant ....set such conditional constraints on my pack.....

Port O let's were unapproachable, unacceptable and my undoing .... It had to flush & it had to be HERS ...so yeah !

Tenting tonight.... "SHE tried it the once..NOPE !  ... The final was the Horse transporter, was 28' Living quarters , with Shower , sink  & commode.

I was pretty much OK with it though... after  25 years of out of the saddle & or Tenting ....the last 5-6 years were OK to retire to the
LQ with queen bed....complete with QUEEN !  :)

Cpt Blodgett, It is possible to get a 5th wheel up there, has been done before. But it has to be dry to do it, and dry for it to go down. I guess if "she" wanted a private campground, you could park at the parking area at the canyons where we shoot the EEM stage.

I bet Jerry wouldn't mind using his yard also and maybe the lovely Mrs. Pitspiter would invite her in for tea.

Might work just fine have a 3500 dually and 4 wheel drive.  Understand about dry I would not want to 1 make ruts or 2 need a tractor to get us unstuck.  Not so much of a private campground issue, just thought a 5r would not mix well with period tents.

Thanks, I have tentative approval for the trip, all things being subject to change.
SWMBO actually outranked me on active duty, tough living with a retired LTC Nurse, the saving grace is she was a pediatric nurse which really works well as I never grew up or if i did was for a very short period prior to going into my second childhood

It's a pretty good size area at the top, they just put the modern stuff over where the cars park. Not so much a rut problem, but the road goes along a bit of a "razorback" where the ground slopes off both sides of the trail. First time we drove up there, my wife wasn't sure cars could drive there! But the last time, she was going up and down like a pro....

Soil type up there makes the road as slippery as snot on ice, nice thing is that part doesn't last long.

As I'm sure most everyone is aware (we've discussed it here before) The Comstock Lodge, our host for the Grand muster banquet the last couple of years, is unavailable for the 2016 banquet. As a result I've been hunting for a suitable replacement venue. It was suggested that we hold the banquet at the camp site, but I'm uncomfortable with this as the possibility of weather issues and dress uniforms don't mix that well. Anyway, I am pleased to announce that I have made arrangements for the banquet to be held at Ft. Hartsuff's barracks and mess hall with a local restaurant catering the meal.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Ft. Hartsuff, it is a restored 1870's Army post. Given that we will be celebrating the anniversary of the Bighorn and Yellowstone Expedition next year and that the date of the banquet actually falls on the exact date of the 140th anniversary of the Battle of Little Bighorn this should be an especially appropriate site to hold the banquet.

I am very much looking forward to the Muster, and now even more so with the location for the dinner.
While on vacation last month, I made an unplanned visit to Ft. Verde, near Sedona, AZ.  I spent a very long time there.  The older I get, the more old things facinate me!  I helps me to appreciate how easy we have it now!

One of my favorite memories now is the 2009 Muster, where we spent the night in the Ft Hartsuff barracks.  Wind howling, wood stoves glowing, and the threat (fullfilled!) of snow in the air.  Uniforms hanging on the wall hooks, racks filled with appropriate weapons. Magnificent!

Only outdoor plumbing is available at the camp. But as long as it's a sunny day, there's warm water for the outdoor shower, and a hose to supply the camp itself. At Fort Hartsuff, no running water in the barracks/mess hall, but there's a well house with bathrooms.

The registration form is attached to the first post of this thread and will likely be posted on the GAF website in the next couple of days.
I strongly recommend folks getting registered early this year. I know we have already completely booked all the rooms in one of the local motels, so I'm thinking participation will be up as most folks always camped in the past. We had 21 in attendance last year, but we've had strong interest from another 24 who weren't attendance last year. If everybody who attended last year comes back and those other 24 all end up making plans to attend that would put us over the 40 participant limit we've had to set.

I am sure there is a tread somewhere with this information but...

What are the max and min ranges for targets for the GAF and Expansion Era Match?  Decisions decisions 1888 TD, 1898 Krag, 03 springfield.

There's not really a minimum range-if you're missing, or the targets don't go down, you can move up. I think the longest shot, at least on the stages I'm familiar with, is one "across the valley" shot that I believe is still less than 100 yards.

Long range was changed last year, and I wasn't there. Previously it was 300 yards, and full power jacketed ammo was allowed for that one.

Ranges vary from 20 to 100 yards, on half scale silhouette targets.  Long ranges uses full power ammunition on 3 armor steel targets placed 100-200-300 yards  See below for a Skirmish run.

I was inspired last year by a Texican that goes by Oklahoma Tom, or Hamish Scott, depending whether or not he's wearing a dress! (kilt) Beautiful green Scot tartan by the way!

Long range targets are AR 500 armor steel,  meant for full power/jacketed loads, and clang they do!  There are no ammunition limitations for the Long Range event.

There are no ammunition limitations for the Long Range event.
And as a point of clarification; there are no ammunition limitations for the Precision Pistol either. The only limitations are on the main match targets.

Col. MG
There is a class for the rifle only if you wouldn't have an appropriate pistol; however, this would give you a nice excuse to buy another!  ;)

Gentlemen,
Please forgive my tardy responses. Our daughter-in-law gave birth to our first grandson a week ago last Monday and he passed away the next morning. As you can imagine things have been kind of chaotic last week and I'm just starting to get things straightened back out.
Al,
It is possible that we might have to run later Sunday than usual. I really expect to be able to get 3 of the 4 main stages (as well as the Long Range and Precision Pistol) done Saturday and finish up the last stage by Noon Sunday.

The last couple of years we had the Saturday Banquet at 7:00 so I'm thinking that we can give ourselves an extra 1/2 hour of travel time and have the banquet at 7:30. This will still give us a couple of hours of daylight to tour the fort afterward. Now if we can finish up the stages early enough that we can get over there earlier and do the tour first, that's what we'll do. If it's looking like we can't start a 3rd stage and still get to the fort my 7:30 we'll save one of the main stages for the next morning and run it at the same time as the stage near Ft. Scotsman.  Even then we'll most likely finish up by noon Sunday.

Ah good news and maybe better news or bad news depending on how you look at it.
The good news is as things now stand I should be in the environs of Sargent on 23 Jun.
The mixed news is she who must be obeyed is not on board for dry camping so I will not be able to park on the farm.
We have a spot reserved in the Victoria Springs Recreation Area.
We hope an Old Army Nurse buddy of Anne's will join us there.  This will allow us to see her and provide some one for Anne to do womanly things with whilst I waste my time doing manly things.

I am getting stoked.  Need to spend more time on the range in preparation.

Question concerning the long range pistol, I assume it's similar format to the Long range rifle? What are the ranges? I don't think I've ever shot either the Lebel or even my .45 at longer than about 15-20 yards. Other pistols I've tried at 100 and beyond, but never those two.

No, it's not "long range" pistol. It's precision pistol. 10 shots on a B-27 target at 25 yards. Highest score wins. X-ring count breaks ties followed by time.

Once again a reminder that the GAF Muster relies on the traditional generosity of it's members as far as door prizes.

So, decommission those "gently used", "field tested" items or reference materials and throw them into your kit to be taken to the banquet Saturday night.

Did we ever get a round count for the various matches.

I know the Rifle Long Range is something like 15 to make 9 hits 3 per at 100 and 200 before you can move to 300.

Early on in the thread there is a recommendation for 100 for the battle rifle.  Luckily I have upwards of 250 pieces of Krag Brass right now.
Have loaded 20 of my 210 grain cast on top of 40 grains AA4350 and 15 of my 173 GI ball on top of 41.5 gr varget to test for the Krag for long range this week.  Will also be Crono ing the 210 grain cast sitting on top of 10 gr AA2.  Will adjust that if they fly faster than 1400 fps.

I will be shooting my 98 Krag Rifle, Battle Rifle and Long Range.  Guess I will be shooting Infantry.

Will either shoot RNV 45 colt or 1911A1 in the pistol match

Round count depends on how good a shot you are.  It can vary, but the average rifle target count per skirmish run is around 20.  So thats 80 or so targets over 4 runs.  And all are must hit.  So how many times do you think you'll miss?  And you'll want some for sighting in, and just plain plinking in the evening

Bring 200 rounds.  Never hurts to have some left over.  And everyone misses more than they think . . .

Last time I was able to get up there, I had about 140 pieces of Lebel brass, all loaded for main match. It was plenty, had some left to use possibly the only 1886 Lebel  ever in a Zoot match the next day. Due to lack of Lebel brass, I used a Swedish Mauser for my long range that year. This year I have plenty of brass, but none of the jacketed bullet loads I have tried so far are grouping acceptably. My main match loads can shoot 3-4" at 100 yards, if I do my part, but all the jacketed loads are spraying out 8" or more :-[

Do you have any Idea of the actual bore size of the Lebel?  The cast bullets might bump up to fill the bore and the Jacketed may be a tad undersized.

Drydock thanks for the recommendation.  Will prolly load up 30 of what shoots best for LR and all the rest of available brass at sub 1400 cast.  That should be a few more than 200 if I don't ruin any more cases.

I do have a bayonet just in case I run out of ammo.

The bullets I am using are a little undersized, .323, while the rifle slugs out at .324-.325. Others have reported good results using flat base, .323 bullets with faster powders (I'm using 3031). My cast are sized at .325. I see that Buffalo now has .327 bullets in stock again, I may try them-but time's getting short, and I already have suitable bullets for the Swede or Argentine. I might even try my cast loads beyond 100 yards, but I'm already using 5-600 yard sight settings to get to 100- might run out of elevation getting to 300!

The Saeco #81 bullet might work, takes a very long OAL in a Lebel to function as a repeater.

Well I loaded up 220 rounds of Krag 210 gc over 10 gr AA2.  Could not get the chrony to pick up that bullet today.  Does not make much of a bang shoots close to point of aim at 25 and 50 but about 8 inches low at 100.  Did not take much wind to blow it 8 inches down wind.

I did load some 173 gr GI ball with close to max load of varget.  Decided 2600 FPS was too hot for the old krag, backed of a grain.  That should fly about 2500 fps.  I was getting nearly 300 fPs more than the tables stated guess that long  barrel on a krag wrings out the last bit of energy from the powder.  Could be the 173 grain ball generates more pressure due to the .3086 vs .308 diameter.  Probably does not hurt that the barrel is new with about 200 rounds through it.  All but the 15 173 gr FMJ I shot to day have been cast. Albeit with gas checks on nearly all of them.

Sitll undecided on what to shoot in Pistol either 45 Colt RNV 7.5 inch or the 1911.  Will bring bullets for both

Departure date is 1 week from this AM.  I am really looking forward to the Muster.

Cpt Dan, those loads sound pretty fast for a Krag. I had a thought about my groups from the Lebel-they were all strung out in a diagonal line like / this. Perhaps from shooting with a tight sling? Will load a few more up and shoot without the sling before I give in and take the Swede. Still not real happy with the groups from the 1892 revolver either. Limited amount of bullets to play with, soooo, may have to use an SAA for the precision part. I really need to start the load development a bit earlier next time.....

Well, I must say I am mighty disheartened over a wrench which was chucked into my Muster plans today!  A month ago I faxed in my application to the BATF for the Form 6NIA import permit for my guns and ammunition, and got a nice printed confirmation that the fax successfully went through ... just as I have done for the numerous previous years I have attended.

Since I hadn't yet heard back from them today (which seemed to be an inordinately long
delay) I phoned to check on the application ... only to be told that there is no record in their system of my application this year!

 ???  :o   :-X   :'(

The chap I spoke to on my first call said I would have to fax it in again ... and there would be a very slim chance it might be processed in time.  I immediately did up a further covering letter and drove halfway across town (to the funeral home where I work part time) and faxed it again - got another printed confirmation that the fax was successful ....  Drove back home, and phoned again to ask if they could confirm it been received this time ...  I got put through to the supervisor of that department who, as soon as he heard my question, asked what fax number I had sent it to ... to which I replied that I had sent it to the fax number listed on the BATF website, and in the application instructions ... and that I had triple-checked it to make sure I had it right.  He then told me they had received many reports about faxes supposedly delivered to that number which they in fact never received, and gave a different fax number to use ... saying they had set up a second fax line because of the problems.  (Not sure why the chap I spoke to in the morning couldn't have told me that ... or why they still list the old fax number on the form and website ....  :-\ )

Anyway, drove BACK across town to re-fax everything to the new number .... it took no less than SEVEN  attempts to get the fax to go through to this new number - it would connect and start sending the documents (9 pages total, so rather slow) but crap out by about page 7 or 8 and deliver a "failure" report.  FINALLY got a confirmation that the entire fax SUPPOSEDLY went through ... by then it was too late to phone back as it was after their closing time in West Virginia, so there is no way to even get through to ask if it got there until Monday at the earliest ....  :P

Sounds like the chances are not good that the application will be processed in time ... IF they got it, that is ... since I am told that a totally problem-free application can maybe be approved within two weeks (whereas there remain only only seven business days maximum before I have to cross the border.)

My new cover letter requests that my application be expedited if at all possible - even though I was told by both chaps today they don't 'fast track' applications ... hoping somebody sympathetic might see it and slip it to the top of the pile or something ...

I will be there if that happens, otherwise .... :'(

Gentlemen:

Your words of encouragement are heartening!

1.  As for bringing only "antique" firearms: yes, I could do that ... and have definitely been considering it as an option ... but am unclear whether I can also bring in the ammunition I would need for them.  If so, I will likely adopt that expedient, since I can certainly bring back anything I take down. (... Canadian firearms laws and restrictions are much less onerous than most Americans realize - almost all of my hassles with attending Musters, or other shooting events in the US, originate with US laws and restrictions.)

HOWEVER, if I can't also bring ammunition for my firearms, the ability to bring in the firearms is of little or no benefit to me ...  :'(

My uniforms are, of course, all "British Empire"(almost exclusively Canadian) but, for a shot at another Brigade Champion award, using borrowed firearms which are not appropriate to the uniform would disqualify me, I understand ...

(I readily admit that I have aspirations to enter the exclusive "maximum of three Brigade Champion Awards" club, with either my Pattern 1863 Canadian Militia Infantry uniform - worn at the last Muster I was able to attend, although I couldn't place with it because I was judging that year - or my brand new Pattern 1863 Canadian Militia Rifles uniform ... for which this would be the debut appearance.)

The Skirmish category I intended to shoot is "Military Single Shot - black powder", for which I would need suitable black powder cartridges - either .577 Snider or .577/.450 Martini-Henry - and also for a suitable  .450/.455/.476 British revolver - extremely unlikely I'd be able to buy, beg, borrow or steal sufficient suitable cartridges for either rifle on that side of the border.  Revolver might be a little less problematic, but still somewhat of a challenge.

2.  Perhaps I could make it a bit easier for myself if I switched to another military category - e.g. Rifleman or Handgunner - I'll have to give that some thought.  So, for example, if Col. Drydock could actually provide enough ammunition to permit me to shoot through the entire Skirmish component, that might be a possible option ....  I could actually bring my own revolver(s) as I do have several which qualify as "antique" on both sides of the border, thus evading the import problems .... (One nice thing about the cutoff year for "antique status" in Canada actually being one year earlier than in the US - i.e. such a firearm must be "pre-1899" up here, rather than "pre-1900" - is that the official written confirmation of "antique" status which I have from the National Firearms Centre run by the RCMP for each such revolver is, of course, accepted as sufficient proof of "antique" status in the US ....)

3.  Neiderlander, my friend, I might well want to take you up on your kind offer regarding the Long Lee and ammunition for at least the Sharpshooter match (and possibly the revolver as well ...)

I have 100 Auto Rim cases for the Mk V.  I don't think that would be enough, though you're welcome to use it.  Unfortunately they're all loaded with smokeless.

I believe some of your Canadian revolvers were chambered for .45 Colt?  If so I do have a cubic ton of .45 Schofield BP rounds you're welcome to use.

Hey Jack
Sorry they are giving you the run a round.  In the US the antique designation is any arm made 1998 or before, any arm made 1899 and latter is considered a Firearm.

What is the maximum number of rounds per stage for the revolver?  I'm considering shooting my 1860 Army, and carrying two, recapping the second one on the clock.  But, a spare cylinder doesn't do much good.

Typically one reload (...or a seconded revolver) will do it. In fact in past years we had a few complaints that participants didn't shoot their BP revolvers enough to justify cleaning them.

This year, however; the "Water Carrier Ravine" will require more than that. (Yes, Drydock I know "we are riflecentric, DAMMIT!" but this stage is an exception) As written you will report to the line with 5 rifle rounds (except Rifleman class). After neutralizing the hostile sniper(s) you will pick up your canteen and start down the ravine engaging the pistol targets as seen and reloading as necessary. In my mind, I'm seeing 10 pistol targets which would mean 10 pistol shots IF you shoot it clean. With our stages that's a mighty big IF. I don't think we've ever had ANYBODY shoot a match clean and very few shoot a clean stage. With Riflemen (and percussion revolver shooters) in mind we are probably going to have to design some way of staging ammunition or more revolvers (battlefield pick ups of course ;) ).

Thanks for bringing this up

There will be 4 skirmish runs,  One as shown for the handgun, the rest rifle centric with anywhere between 15 and 25 rifle targets, and 3-7 handgun designated targets.  How many rounds depends on how much you miss . . .

15 round long range,  10 round precision pistol.

I'd say bring a minimum of 150 rifle rounds, and 50 handgun.  Or 200 of either if shooting a one gun class.

55 rounds of 8mm Lebel, so I should be good for revolver rounds.

overshot quite a bit.

If I had a suitable cast bullet, I'd bring you some more 6.5X55 just in case, but I only have the Lee/Mid South "Cruise Missile", and at least in my Swede, it has to be seated very deep, the nose portion is too large for the throat. Will have about 100 rounds of Lebel Revolver ammo, though. I'm thinking I'll use the Swede for the long range work, though. Work situation and other obligations have conspired to prevent successfully working up a decent jacketed bullet load in the Lebel, so I'll probably look for a load I've used before in the Swede.

overshot quite a bit.

River City, I was referring to the difference of your shot to hit ratio between the first and second skirmish of the Muster last year, after Drydock suggested adding a little elevation pilgrim! Thought you were going to run out of ammo on the first skirmish, and you didn't miss on the second!

I will only admit to being a lousy shot.

If'n Diamond is that susceptible to the power of suggestion, I'd better start jinxing him in the car on the way up.

"I've never seen you squint so much. Are you having trouble with your eyes?"
"You seem to be nervous. Worried you won't shoot well at the Muster?"
"Are you sure you brought the best rifle and right ammunition?"

If anyone out there has ever thought about attending, I heartily recommend you do so. Shooting games a simulated combat course is a hoot!!

Many thanks to all that made the muster possible. Also many thans for making Anne, her friend Shirley and the dogs welcome as well.

Many thanks to Drydock for the ride home. Which reminds me, I've got your sleeping pad, and I think you've got my "tack hammer" (3 lb blacksmith hammer) I was using for driving tent pegs, and there's another book so far un-accounted for, might still be packed somewhere. Is that a 10# Parrot?

Good eye, RCJ!  Actually it is a 3/4 scale 10# Parrott Rifle tube, produced by Hern Iron Works in Coeur d'Alene, ID (http://hernironworks.com/ (http://hernironworks.com/)) which we mounted on our own carriage .... closest we could get in size and general configuration to a British 9 Pounder Rifled Muzzle Loading Gun tube, which is what our namesakes actually had in the field during the 1885 North West Rebellion -

Unfortunately, nobody reproduces the 9-pounder barrel .... The most noticeable difference in the barrel profiles is that the reinforced breech of the Parrott does not extend very far forward - ending behind the trunions - whereas on the British 9-pounder tube the reinforce extends ahead of the trunions. We have plans to build up the reinforced section of this barrel (with fiberglass or the like) to more closely resemble the profile of the 9-pounder, then re-paint ...   ;D

Okay, I have to say, that cannon is as cool as can be. How much powder does it use? Naturally I'm assuming you don't fire solid shot out of but what would it shoot?

So far, we have only used that one for "blank" firing in demonstrations such as seen in the first photo, for which we normally use a 3 ounce charge ... It is a 2 1/4 inch bore, cast iron but the tube is cast around a high-pressure steel liner (smoothbore) so it presumably could be used to fire projectiles - we just haven't tried that (yet).

Our other gun is a 1/2 scale version of the British 9-pounder RML gun, made about 30 years ago by an engineer - its barrel is also smoothbore (2") but all steel, and the gun is roughly the overall size of an original 6-pounder.  We do use that one to fire projectiles on occasion, using 2" steel round stock cut off in 2" lengths - not the most aerodynamic projectile, but it will punch right through a vehicle body at 150 yards or so! This is the smaller gun -

R J, either you're very tall, or your comrades are boy scouts in disguise.  ;D

My vote is for very tall.

Your vote would be correct, ST. I'm about 6'1" and he's got me beat by a couple inches, at least.

Wonder how that would fare in a light Nebraska wind, never did find my onion that blew off my table and into the ravine.

The amazing thing is the amount of training it takes to make that ostrich stay perched up on his head without moving.

Del,

This begs qualification.  When I lived in Wyoming they used a logging chain as a wind vane.  Until the chain began to indicate wind direction it didn't even qualify as a light wind.

General Jerry, is your pitspitr@nctc.net email account still active? -J.Barr
I also have pitspitr@gmail.com. But I have not gotten a response from that address either...
Sorry guys. I should have responded sooner if only to say that I'm checking into your comments and will get back to you. I've been crazy busy the last week, then I came down with some summer bug that makes me want to sleep all the time. I don't quite have everything cleaned up off my backlogged schedule, but I am making progress. I WILL get back to you. In the mean time keep the comments coming. This is how the Grand Muster gets better.

pitspitr@gmail is correct.

At least we didn't have to try and keep the tarp from flying away in the wind this time.
