ambushed nephew in afganistan
« on: June 27, 2008, 01:03:54 PM »
I don't know whether this is the place to post this, or even the right time considering spanish marshal's deployment,  but yesterday my nephew Sam Schoenhight and his patrol of six men were ambushed in Afghanistan.  One soldier was killed and all five were wounded, of which my nephew was the worst with a bullet to the head.  They put him into an induced coma to keep him still because they could not get all of the fragmented bullet out and are evacking him to germany today.  Your thoughts and prayers for his recovery would be greatly appreciated by the family.

To all the soldiers who serve or ever have, Those of us who enjoy the freedoms that you have provided us by your dedication to duty are grateful in the fullest measure.  We honor your courage.

Kid S,

My thoughts are with your nephew and his comrades. It is my hope that the response to that attack was severe and that those who committed it, or even close to being involved in it, are no more.

Yours,

God speed to your nephew and all servicemembers in all the areas. My youngest just made it out as a Corporal, USMC. I pray that all of the folks make it safely through the valley. Al
When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains...and the women come out to cut up what remains; Just roll to your rifle and blow out your brains. And go to your God like a Soldier.

I used to work alongside med forces in an FSB (Forward Support Battalion) on active duty. First and Second echelon CASEVAC in the modern US Army is the best in the history of the world. Not even your best local EMTs and ambulances have the resources and equipment and training these fine folks have.
I bet he was out of the country before his chain of command even had him listed as wounded on the duty roster. They'll take DARNED GOOD CARE of him, I can assure you of that!

:D First let me say thank you to all who have posted here and have kept Sam in their thoughts and prayers!  Miracles can and do happen everyday!

An update on Sam:

He was forwarded to Germany where they were able to remove some more of the bullet, but not all.  His vital signs were going up and down and he had severe swelling on his brain.  However, he came out of the coma and they are sending him today to Bethesda, Maryland where supposedly some of the best of the best neurosurgeons are located.  He still has a lot of swelling and there are some parts of the bullet and skull fragments in his brain but, praise God, when they put him on the plane he was holding his own IV bag and trying to talk.  They couldn't understand him so apparently either the swelling is causing some problems, or the fragments of skull or bullet have injured his speech center.  Won't know 'til they get him to Maryland and have a better look at him.  But considering that the tough little son of a gun is alive and STABLE after having suffered a wound that is usually mortal, we of his family are happy with his progress and again thank you for your kind regards.  More as I get updated.

Kid :D
