1907 Savage holster
« on: April 26, 2009, 12:24:19 AM »
Howdy all. Wow, I step out for just a little bit to work on the little ones room, and see what great jobs you all are doing. I have a lot of posts to catch up on.

Well, heres the latest holster I did for a 1907/17 Savage.

I still need to give it a coat of Skidmores, but other than that its all done.

The finish is olive oil, sunshine, an hour in coffee dye, olive oil,  and then skidmores in the morning.

Howdy Bud,
That is AWESOME!! For a person that told me they couldn't carve, I believe you were being mighty modest about things!!
I like very much :) :).
So when i am  suppose to be up at your place so you can show me how not to carve ;D ;D.

Great job Bud, Thanks for sharing!

That's really beautiful, Dalton. I like the simple shape with the full tooling. The wild rose is a good design for that. Thanks.

Hey Dalton, very nice work. Color, carving, stitching, the full meal deal.

I'm curious about how this holster functions as a CAS holster, Wild Bunch style. It sure looks cool. We got a bunch of guys with 1911's, but very little gun leather for them. They have tactical type holsters, but not something for SASS. We held one Wild Bunch Match, but the leather was pretty funky, poor fit. Most guys just used their regular CAS leather.

I don't have a 1911 any more, so I don't have anything to compare it with. Thanks, JD

JD, if you have Al Stohlmans book, How to Make Holsters, this is the pattern for the 1911, reduced to fit the Savage.

As long as the ejection port is covered, I believe the holster is legal. I am not sure if crossdraw, and variations of that are legal, tho. I only use strong side, so havent worried about that.

Thanks for the comments gents!

JD, heres the rules per SASS EOT guidelines:

Holsters and magazine pouches must be of traditional or military design and made from traditional materials, (e,g, canvas or leather).
The holster must cover the entire length of the barrel and completely cover ejection port. No open front speed holsters allowed.
If a holster has a flaps or strap they need not be closed during competition.
No metal or plastic "competition" type equipment allowed.
No shoulder or cross-draw holsters may be used during competition.
Magazine pouches must be worn on the opposite side of the body from the handgun.
Magazine pouches must be worn vertical.
Magazine pouches can hold either 1 or 2 magazines.
At least 2 inches of the magazine must be covered by the magazine pouch.
All other SASS regulations pertaining to these items apply

Dalton, that is a really nice job on the holster.  Very clean look.  Thanks for posting those rules , been wondering what the actual criteria was for the Wild bunch matches.

Well, heres the pics with a coat of Skidmores on top of it. Its amazing how mellow the leather turns after a coat of this.
I say this one is done, and onto the next one.
The second photo is a comparison of this one compared to my 1911 holster. Same pattern but smaller.

Hey Dalton
How'd you go about reducing the size?

That looks like a really early 1907. Mine is the next to last year of production.

Sry Pitspitr. Yahoo decided cas city notifications were spam.
I simply used a photocopier to reduce it to fit. Not sure % anymore though.
