Title: Scenario: If You could take only two black powder guns camping
Post by: Doug.38PR on June 25, 2018, 02:47:22 PM
You are going primitive camping with your family (or even by yourself).  You, of course, want protection.  You choose two guns handloaded with black powder ammo.  .Which would they be?

For me:  a 4 3/4 Ruger New Vaquero in .45 colt and a Uberti  1873 carbine in .44-40 would be suitable.

Ah well, were it I, It'd be a Uberti 3 1/2 in Sheriff with the full length Ejector in 45 Colt.  The rifle would be either a Uberti 1873 Trapper or 1866 Trapper, in 45 Colt.

Colt SAA chambered in 45 Colt and Winchester 1876 rifle chambered in 45-75wcf.

A 73 in 44wcf is a bit more handy but if I need to kill something for my protection or food there is no such thing as too much or too dead.

Same as Cliff , all my border trips are basically going into the badlands 30+mi. into the desert and 3 mi. from Old Mexico , you sleep with your guns down there . My constant companion is  a .45 Colt SAA with at least 100 rounds in my pack and a 76 in 45/75 ,  100 rounds min. The West is still wild down there .,,,DT

Think I might foller Cliff and Dusty - I dont own a decent cartridge pistol but I had a colt (clone) in 44/40 but a 45 would be a better choice and the first two cylinders would be carrying a number ten shot load - you said primitive ! Lotsa snakes in our backcountry and I do not like em at all! The rifle ? yes to the 1876 despite the extra weight - anything hit with that is gonna stay hit.

My choice would be a Shot Gun, with a selection of bird shot, buck shot and slugs.
A revolver in .45 Colt.

Most definitely my SAA .45 Colt revolver.  If I understand the question being what is currently in my gun vault it'd have to be my Winchester 1894 in .32 Winchester Special.  Otherwise give me an 1886 in .45-70.  (Just 'cuz I've always wanted one. ;D)

Seems 45 Colt SAA is far and way the leader...and I would agree,  mine is a Uberti Stainless ...
and my Krag.

OK saw the header DoH !  " two BLACK POWDER guns "   yeah I know  30/40 Krag is smokeless....

but its what I'd take....

EDIT.... staying within the question parameters then and revisiting the thread 4 months later ...

I'd still have the 45 Colt and my 44/40 rifle ( that's using whats in my safe )

Okay....I'll bite.
Sidearm is a no-brainer and given for me...SAA (copy) in 45 Colt.  I like my '73 rifle in 44-40, but I think that I'd prefer my Trapdoor carbine.  It may be slow to shoot, but it is light and I have a lot of confidence with it and in it.  It is deadly and accurate.

I'd bring along my Cimarron 7th Cav. in .45 Colt and my Uberti 1873 sporting rifle in .44-40. both are reliable weapons firing rounds that have been proven to be reliable in regards to both hunting and self-defense. My second place choice in regards to the long gun is my MK. III Snider carbine. Anything hit by that is staying down.

If I have the choice of any 'Old West' gun and not just what I have, I'd probably stick with the SAA .45 with the cavalry length barrel, but I'd pick a shorter, lighter version of the '73. Either a 19" carbine or a trapper's carbine with that nice & short 16" barrel.

Well, probably my 8" and 5" 1860 colt and the removable shoulder stock.   I can wear them in a fancy 2 gun rig, me being a guy full of juice and I can keep the shoulder stock handy.   I am as good with it at 75 yards as I am my Henry.

Old model Ruger Bisley in 45 Colt. Accompanied by Marlin lever action also in 45 Colt. 250 grain slugs with a full case of 777. Hypothetically speaking I would feel very comfortable with that. Practically speaking I feel very comfortable with that when I camp although I'm not carrying around black powder loads.

It would have to be my Marlin LTD III, 18.5" Octagon 45/70 with 62 grains of 2F behind a 405 grain Flat Nose bullet.  Side arm '73 Colt's in 38 W.C.F. with 3F behind 180 Big Lube Boolit.

Ahh.  I actually drove down the eastern edge of Big Bend 15 years ago on the outside of the park to a little empty road that went all the way to the border.  Not a soul around.  Just a cemented off walking bridge and on the Mexican side, an empty desert as far as my eye could see.
The border (Rio Grande) all along there as far west as Langtry and maybe even Del Rio is a deep canyon that can’t be crossed

I'll be just a little different here:  While my sidearm would most certainly be one of my SAAs in .45 Colt, the longarm, well.

If I was thinking of 4 legged critters, it'd be my Sharps Carbine, .50-70.

If 2 legged critters were a concern, despite Leander McNellys approval of the above, it'd be my 1870/87 Vetterli-Vitali TS carbine, with several Vitali clips to feed it.

I don't worry about four-legged predators in my neck of the woods. I would (and have) brought along my Uberti '73 short rifle in 44WCF to protect against the two-legged variety.  When I'm working around in the woods, I often carry my Pietta Frontier 4 3/4" SAA in 44WCF.  Those make a great combination. Frankly, though, it's mostly for nostalgia. If I really am concerned about threats, I take along some boring, modern guns.

That is a tough one...

As others have mentioned, if two legged wolves are a concern then we are talking all modernisnche .... Smith airweight or 1911 or hipower or ...

But for fun, and not feeling underarmed,
I am still waffling betwixt

A) .54 sharps papercutter percussion business rifle + 8” remmy  1858 percussion

Or

2) Remington revolving carbine (with added tang mounted peep sight!) and 5.5” remmy 1858, both .45 cartridge conversions

Version A) is fun if playing pre 1865 buff hunter, and I have almost a dozen brass cartridges for the sharps heheheheh as well as paper
Cartridges for both....

But version 2 is a lot lighter and quicker on the reloads..... and the carbine is very accurate out to 100 yds, and so light you might question the weight of a win 73 ....

And then. I still need a large knife, a small knife, a folding knife, a belt axe or hawk, brass compass, cartridge boxes .....
Oh, and lunch! And a canteen.
And my hat
And vest
And stuff.

And then there is the perennial question: boots , brogues, or moccasins?

Down here?  Most likely be my 45 smoke wagon, with a 100 rounds of ammo.  Rifle?  Only real 4 leg threat is wild dogs or the occasional wild pig, both pretty rare in these parts.  Meth heads, on the other hand.  It'd be a toss up between my 1860 Henry, in 45 Colt, or my 1876 NWMP in 45-75, and about a hundred rounds for the rifle.  Or maybe my Garand with a bandoleer of clips.

I actually have to be Honest and more forthright.  Straight up, here it is.  My personal version of primitive camping is a Holiday Inn Express.  I actually prefer a Hilton Suite.  Simple amenities like an ensuite  Wine Cooler for drinks and a 4K Big Screen.  Oh, and a lobby lever Bar and perhaps a close in Steak House.   8)

With those services in mind, I seldom if ever felt the need to pack in my own food nor set a Camp Fire for warmth.  I haven't encountered any critters in years.  And ..... Room Service.  Marvelous innovation.  I realize how tough it sounds, but somebody has to do it !!  ::)

Packing Iron seems ... so ... superfluous.  Although I do tote a 1911 everywhere I go.  Just for comfort, understand  :D

Valid point, with that in mind, it probably depends on where I'm camping. If it's in my normal neck of the woods, my .45 SAA repro would work. Or my 1851 Navy repro. If it's somewhere with more dangerous wilde life or closer to the bad stretches of our southern border, then I'll stick with my previous answer.

No Boogey man where I camp , we do have black bear and mt. lion but they pose very little danger even when they come around camp , and they do very often . Its the drug cartels and human trafficker's , and the fact that help is hrs. away for the added concern I my case . Picked up trail cam pics of thirteen on my property less than 600yd. from my house two nights ago. Camping in the bend is different than some places.,,,,DT

The OP only suggests, "primitive camping" and "hand loaded BP" rounds for "personal protection", for "individual or family".
Depending on where you may live, and the type of camping you may or may not be use to can account for the many different replies to this post.
I think this post has been fun to watch and read.

A lot of fantasy at work here .....

I'd take my bomb proof Stoeger 'Uplander' 12 ga SxS or my Shiloh 50-70 carbine - or both. They work evwry time.

Can't pack a handgun due to our stupid gun laws. You have to be a criminal to do that.

Too true, Blue, but if you use a long gun, you're slightly better off.

You CAN defend yourself with a gun in Kanuckistan, but it's going to be a very expensive court battle to prove it. Beats the hell out of the alternative where you wish you had blown the bad guy to hell who was on the street before you were.

Lately there have been a couple of court decisions in favour of the shooter who was defending his home and property against unlawful trespass and threat to life. The public is starting to wake up.

Interesting discussion/scenarios.
In my case, I do plan to camp someday at my GG Uncle's Montana homestead site.
Will have my canvas pyramid tent & old tyme camp gear. Likely have an assortment of old firearms on hand.
If only TWO, would be my 71/2" 1873 (440-40) & 1876 (45-60). Add a third item & it would be 1866 Carbine (44-40).
All loaded with black powder.

If my wife makes the trip, I reckon she'll be holed up at the nearest motel  ???

Upon reflection.  Primitive Camping.  Ok, I'm in.  Motel 6.  I consider Motel 6 primitive.  Not normally located in Savoryville.  So my selection for BP arms would have to be amended.  Model '97, BP rounds loaded with Buck Shot.  Large Buck Shot.  Most anything is going to take place close up, so we're still talking about my 1911.  In this case, rounds loaded with 3f and a 200Gr Hollow Point.  Should do.

I vote with Coffinmaker. Holiday Inn Express fits me just fine.
In seven years of US Army I spent enough days "camping out" with the chef would present a selection of C-ration canned goodies and not a speck of Bearnaise sauce in sight...how disgusting.
My firearms selection usually consisted of an M1 Garand or an M1 carbine and a bandolier of  clips.

However, getting back on subjec,t I would select a percussion Sharps .54 caliber carbine with  a hand full of  paper cartridges and caps along with  a couple of 1860 Colt .44 caliber revolvers loaded 6 beans in the wheel and capped.
Ay least that is my opinion I may be wrong.

I think a '63 Sharps would be a poor choice. Why? If you don't tear down and clean the breechblock after even one one shot, you risk the breechblock seizing, the flash hole clean out screw at least.

This is not something I would care to do in the field. After a day at the range with my .50  '63s (a carbine and a Military Rifle), I look forward to a couple of hours of breechblock cleaning.  If you are foraging for food, you will be firing a few shots at grouse, whatever.
That means cleaning.

Likewise for cap & ball revolvers. Way cool and oh, so romantic to pot a grouse or bunny with your .44, but a after a few shots, we have the cleaning issue.

I too did a lot of "camping" while in uniform when on field exercises. On occasion that meant crawling under a parked vehicle to get out of the rain to sleep. I knew it was time to move when the vehicle started up.

Now I step out of the door and I'm in hunting country. I flush grouse when walking the dogs, spook the occasional deer and bear and watch a cow moose foraging in the weeds across the lake twice a day. I have a moose draw so I'm hoping that Bullwinkle pays her a visit while it is valid.

I'd like to take a moose with one of my Sharps rifles, likely one of my 45-70s. I'll go prone with x-stix as it's 225-250,yards to where he'd show up courting the cow.

My Sharps carbine has the Hahn Machine Works conversion to the chamber and breech block and it can easily get 20 to 30rounds aimed  fire down range with no problems.
After that a quick squirt of Ballistol around the breech block and I am ready for more shooting. I am not sure how a 450 grain bullet moving at about 1200 ft/sec would affect a threat wearing soft body armor but I expect it would slow them down to a crawl.
As far as 4 legged threats are concerned that should be sufficient for most occasions.
If not check out the 4 bore stopping double rifles on Forgotten Weapons. A small round ball weighing 1750 grains propelled by a "light" charge of 825 grains of black powder. The slug was considerably heavier. with more powder.

Five rds or fifty, you have the same cleaning issue. That means stripping the block and removing the flash hole screw.

Prying up the gas plate on my 63's requires a pair of thin bladed screwdrivers. I usually do that at home with the block held in the padded jaws of a vise.

I've often wondered how Berdan's Sharpshooters coped in the era, cleaning under field conditions.

Hi PJ,
this is not a paid advertisement but check this site. I am just a very satisfied customer.
http://www.hahnmachineworks.com/
That sliding sleeve is swaged in place, the paper cutter breech face is also attached to the breech block and my experience when using his paper tubes is minimal cleaning is required to keep shooting. A spritz of Ballistol or a fast spray of original Pam kitchen non stick oil every 20 or 30 rounds keeps my Sharps shooting with no problems. If a piece of the burnt tube is left in the chamber just stick in another round and keep on shooting.
With this conversion there is almost no gas escape and that is why the breech block stays clean.
At least that is my experience with my Pedersoli Sharps. YMMV
Cordially

My '63s are both in .50 calibre so Charlie Hahn's tubes are of no use to me. Unless someone makes a .50 calibre ring tail bullet.

If he could convert my breech blocks without having the whole rifle shipped, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

PJ,
I don't want to hijack this thread, but what Hahn does with a Sharps makes it super reliable for prolonged shooting.
I would not expect to get into a prolonged fire fight out camping but that rifle would be impressive.
Also throwing those 400+ grain lead slugs down range gets a bit expensive. I use a Moose Mold .54 ring tail bullet.

Well if things are limited to black powder guns then I'd be my 1860 Army 44 revolver (would prefer my favorite c&b, my 2nd Model Dragoon as I like the feel and I'd be better "For wackin' surly critters" with, but the 60 Army is a little more convenient size and weight wise). The 2nd one would be my double twelve short barrel scattergun. Guess I'd tote along various shotshell loadings for different situations, 2's, 5/6's, and 8's.

If it is any time between 1860 and 1873, I guess I would opt for a M1860 Colt's Army, possibly with a cartridge conversion.  For a long arm, it would depend on what I expected to encounter...large four-legged critters, including griz, I'd opt for a large bore breachloader.  Yes, a Sharps carbine would seem to be the choice, but, frankly, I think I'd rather have a 5th Model Burnside carbine, with brass cartridge cases that seal the breach!  If I was more worried about two-legged varmints, then a M1860 Henry Repeating rifle in .44 rimfire (presuming we are talking about what was really available), although a M1860 Spencer Repeating Carbine would also serve well for both big game and bad guys.
Now if we are talking after 1873, I'd switch to a Colt's Single Action and probably keep the Spencer until 1878, when I'd switch to a .44-40 Colt's and Winchester '73.  After 1886, I'd go with a .45 Colts and a M1886 Winchester in .45-70.

Hard one.  What two guns would I take into the wilderness?  Well, I would choose a 7.5 inch .45 Colt SAA and 100 rds.  My second choice is my 1876 carbine in .45-60.  I'd have a belt full of cartridges and four boxes in my pack.  No telling what I'd run into the wild.

Looking over this question again...

Are we tent camping in bear country?

Anywhere near correctional facilities? (I ask because I do and have camped during prisoner escapes... unsettling at best...)

Are we camping in a 5th wheel or other hard sided camper?

Are we backpacking into the waaaaay back country?

Good discussions all.

PLUS ONE to Bunk.

Additionally .... My idea of grub while on Safari is "Fillet Minion" or perhaps "Peasant Under Glass" all served in climate controlled comfort.

and, of course, washed down with a big mug of a good ale...right?
That makes me want to dig a couple of steaks out of the freezer for supper
Bunk.

I guess it would be all of the above.  But chiefly tent camping “waaaaay back” into the country with bear, cougar, illegal aliens, smugglers, poachers, Bigfoot/Fouke Monster/Skunk Ape, toothless guys that want other men to squeal like a pig; via foot, horseback, 4 wheeler or jeep/pickup.

Doug,
Here in the Deep South we have all the beasties you mention in your last post. Plus a few that you may not expect to find in other parts of North America.
This is my reason for posting # 7, (I believe) a Shotgun, various ammo and a large cal. revolver. I assumed all camping was to be rather primitive.

My best,
 Blair
