New front sight
« on: July 29, 2019, 01:48:20 PM »
My wife has decided she wants a larger gold bead front sight for her new Winchester/Miroku '73 44-40.

The current bead mikes .063. Pioneer Gunworks offers one that mikes .093 and a 1/8" "Speed Sight". The latter isn't an option as she isn't a "speed" shooter and we shoot out to 100m and beyond.

Anyone other options out there .... ?

Hi PJ,

This may sound flaky, gold fingernail polish on the front sight?

I have a Marbles brass bead sight on my Uberti 1873.  I don't remember the exact height or the size of the bead, but Marbles offers a variety.  I chose a smaller bead for a finer sight picture.  I assume that the Miroku '73s use a standard dovetail.

EDIT:  Through the miracle of Brownells' order history section (from 2012), I found the exact front sight that I have:

https://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/sights/front-sights/rifle-barrel-mounted-1-16-53-w-front-sight-prod101086.aspx

Of course that's the height that I needed and the size of bead that I like--your needs will likely be different...

I like the size of the gold bead on the Winchester/Miroku, but - it's NOT my rifle! My wife finds it too small for her liking.

The bead on her Marlin 94 .357 is slightly larger and that is what she wants to duplicate. I think the Pioneer .093 will do. I'm surprised that it is not a tapered dovetail like the Lyman, but a straight base.

After exhausting all the usual suspects, I called Marble's Gun Sights and spoke with the customer service manager. Took several tries as he works four 10 hours days and goes to a lot of meetings.

He told me they don't sell retail and I'd have to order from a dealer. I told my frustrations with that ("We don't ship to Canada", It's on back order,", etc., etc.) and he sold me what I wanted.

It pays to go to the source.  ;D

Had my 'smith install the new Marble's front sight with 3/16" bead on my wife's Miroku '73.

The original sight was in TIGHT !!! Applying heat, penetrating oil had no effect. He had to cut the sight in two with a hacksaw.

Then some careful file work on the base of the new sight to get it to fit.

Glad I didn't attempt it myself ....  ::)

I think it took 3 taps from the Wyoming Sight Drifter tool to knock the factory front sight on my Miroku out.

I was referring to the degree of difficulty in removing our respective front sights.
