The Powder Room - CAS reloading / Re: Shelf life of APP ?
« Last post by Abilene on Yesterday at 07:06:03 PM »
I posted in one of Mako's threads on BP shotshells about some old commercial shotshells made with Pinnacle (APP) in paper hulls.  I bought them from a retiring shooter, and they must have been 15 years old.  Anyway, the boomed just fine but the paper had degraded so it split badly and the heads tore from the hull upon extraction.  So I think it would be okay in properly loaded metallic cartridges.  Major, I did the same as you with some of this stuff - I dissected 4 rounds so I could reload a few of the paper hulls with BP (they disintegrated just like with the Pinnacle, so the paper was already degraded) - and the powder in those shells was like a rock which I chipped out with an ice pick.  Anyways, I took those 4 shells worth of powder and chunks and set it off inside a sheet of newspaper on the back porch.  It whooshed and smoked just fine!   :)

Good story , nice twist in the plot .. I though you were saying adios to CAS...
can't wait for the movie  ;D
17+ years later, I'm still using this same cart.  It's in need of a "freshening"... but still serviceable!

Until you said wood grips, I was going to suggest http://www.gripmaker.com/ and https://gungrip.com  for faux ivory grips.  The latter is N C Ordnance, and they say theirs is for a Beretta Stampede Bisley which I've never even heard of but probably made by Uberti.

Interesting piece.

Not quite as nice as your last find!

Hard to say what I might do with it in the future.  If I was to spend some money on making it mechanically sound, I would definitely shoot it more.  I should at least inquire as to the expected cost.   I used to shoot the 1901 model quite a bit, a couple thousand rounds over 25 years.  This 44-40 was owned by a really old cowboy shooter in Alaska whom I don't think had ever shot it, and his buddy who sold it for him is friends with another Alaska shooter from whom I bought the '92 carbine a few years ago.

Coffinmaker, I just checked end shake.  I don't have feeler gauges here, but it isn't bad, certainly no worse than some of my other Colt's.

I'm here, up all night with a sick wife, nothing serious but since this all started I can't sleep even if she's in the living room.  Riley tells me if I don't hear her up.  He's taking his new job serious.  For some reason the big cat has decided she likes to hide behind my computer screens and he finds out and yells at her.  Rita went to a 2 o:clock funeral thing and I passed, one of her cousins.  She decided to put on her rings she had to take off for surgery and dropped the birthstone one.  I got down on the floor and found it, landed in the top case of peaches under her dresser, open and half gone.

Riley watched and was ready to yell for help, not that anyone would hear but me and the cats.  Much better than Tuesday morning I got up on my own, expected it but also had a cane close.  Was a little short of breath but a lot better.  We are not 100% sure what the problem is but the Z Pack helped.  Almost always does with this crap, and one I'm not allergic to.

Got an appointment with the Pulmo Dr. on the 21st.  The old witch I didn't like retired and got a brand new young one, good chance I may have seen him as a resident in the hospital. ;D

Got some boneless pork chops or what ever they call loin cut and no bone today, different name tomorrow. ;) Got them in the crock pot, got them mostly done and starting to pull last night and then put them in the ice box after cooking them on low for a while in some of that fancy ketchup stuff. ::)

Some people get all upset about it but out of the 100 or so BBQ sauces and the 100 or so rubs in a big store most are similar and if you do a true blind test of them aka cook and serve with out telling them what it is people say it's good and almost never ask what it is.  And if you ask if they don't make their own most use the most advertised one.  ::)

Yes I'm feeling good again and doing my mild rants.   Also most want their bacon and fish over cooked.  Been watching for use it or freeze it on Yellow Fin, first time I cooked it she sent it back as half raw. ;)  Then she complained it was dry. ::)  She likes those T fish I call Egyptian Crappie.  Says it reminds her of them which it does.

The one container of Shockey's gold that I have used was clumped when I first opened it, making it difficult to measure out with a dipper. I closed it up again and shook the heck out of it. Problem cured.

Yeah, that's the ticket
