Very cool. I often wonder what gun shops of the day looked like. I enjoyed seeing all of those guns on the interior shots of the store.

What did the gun shops of the day look like?

They looked like hardware stores and dry goods emporiums, because guns were viewed as tools, and nothing more.

While yes, they were viewed as tools there are many documented examples of people viewing their guns as more than just tools. Bat Masterson special order Colt, Wild Bill's engraved 51s along with the many many embellished guns show that many viewed these guns as works of art also.

What you describe are custom worked pieces, special ordered by the buyer - those usually went directly to his place of residence, or the town he lived in - just like ordering from a Sears, Roebuck catalog.

For that matter, at the turn of the century, those folks could supply engraved pieces - but they weren't sitting on a glass shelf.

There was no 'gun culture' like there is today - no shops like 'Collectors Firearms' existed.

in the video it shows some photographs of period gun stores, sorta looks like my local gun store. But the man in the video stated, the Freund bros started in the camps following the trains. so probably like a tent till they had enough saved for a building.

I remember a similar gun store I used to visit in Toronto 60 years ago, Modern Gun Shop at 30-06 Danforth Road, the interior looked very like the one in the video. The ceiling was completely covered with handguns wired to it! There was a central island of long gun racks and signs that said 'GUNS ARE LOADED!'  Pretty exciting to a 15 year old just learning about guns. Bought several long guns there brought home on the 'bus with no case! Try that today! The 'bus went past my favourite gun shop, Holman and Hickey on Dawes Road. A whole lot of good memories there.
