Spanish American War Uniform Question
« on: September 05, 2014, 04:11:48 PM »
I am putting together a Spanish American War impression in Regular Infantry.  I am pretty sure as to what I need, but do have a question as to what type of bandana the Regular Infantry wore as to what color was I?  I know the Rough Riders had a Blue polka dot one so that is out.  Anyplace I can find the information?

What ever you want.  There was no official bandana, even for the 1st USV it was a volentary affectation.  The cowboys in the regiment were used to wearing one, so Roosevelt made sure everyone had the same.

If I had to venture a color, it would be service branch: Infantry would be Sky Blue, as opposed to Artillery red or Cavalry yellow.

There was a lot of slack given to 'campaign clothing' - this would include something like the bandanna, so pick something easily available at the time from one of the Sears, Roebuck's catalog reprints and go from there.

Patterns don't matter - nor do colors - we wouldn't wear Branch of Service color around our necks until Korea, so whatever appeals to you will be fine.

Remember - it'll be 100% cotton, and it'll be 'big' - like the Army Cravat bandage @ 37"X37"X37"  - that way, it was actually usable and not decorative.

Campaign clothing took a beating - make sure your bandanna looks washed out.

It is a beautiful blanket. I hesitated to use it, but it was a bit stiff, being new, and I wanted to break it in.

Toyed with the idea of stitching the "U S" into the middle, but decided not to.
