Removing blue from a SAA Colt
« on: July 27, 2017, 07:05:05 PM »
I have a 1st Gen Colt in 41 Colt (1904) that has been totally blued. I have cleaned it up put it back together. Lockup is tight, original grips, good bore. I want to remove blue what chemicals would you use to clean it up? I have birchwood casey rust blue remover. Is that a good place to start? Just want a little input . Thanks

A friend over here in the UK placed his new Uberti 1858 Remington into his ultrasonic bath to clean it after a shoot. It came out with no trace of charcoal blue or case-colours left; it may work on a Colt.
Best regards.

Disassemble completely and other than the springs, put it in a bath of Evapo Rust, it will take it down to bare metal, but will not harm the base steel at all. It is non toxic and safe to handle with bare hands.  Then you can take off the barrel and reblue (recommend rust blue like Eddie Janis of Peacemaker Specialists) send the hammer, loading gate and frame out for case coloring, the real thing and have the screws, base pin and small parts nitre blued.  The gun will look period correct.

Do NOT buff the pistol disassembled!!!  Only buff with grip frame installed to cylinder frame.  To do otherwise will round the edges and make the gun look refinished from 20 yards away.  If you're going to send the gun out for refinishing of any sort -- blueing, case hardening, plating, etc., be sure all the buffing is completed on the assembled gun before sending the components out.  Specify that the parts are not to be buffed further by the people doing the finish work.  Not every company will be willing to work with you on these conditions.
