screw in top of hammer
« on: January 11, 2020, 07:45:00 AM »
I have a question. I am looking at a Taylors uberti 1873 cattleman, I have had 3 in the past. this one is an on line auction. it has a small screw in the top of the hammer in the middle of the curve. it must have something to do with a safety feature, I have never seen one like it before. what is it? can the hammer be replaced to get rid of it? thanks for the help,,,,,,,,,,,,,
beware of the man who has only one gun, he probably knows how to use it.....

Since it is in an auction, I would suggest passing on it and waitining until you find the "old model" with the proper hammer that you desire...

 :D Hi Perfesser  ;D

Now why didn't I think of that.  Don't like it .... Don't buy it.  Kinda like a Buss.  Don't like the destination of the one just pulled up??  Don't get on.  Wait for the next one ... or two.   8)

OlSkool,

I doubt Uberti could answer that question.  a genuine WAG (Military acronym for Wild Ass Guess) on my part would be about 20 or 25 years ago.

The changes aren't actually "Safety" features.  They only serve ONE purpose.  DROP TEST.  BATFE has a requirement the gun be dropped from about 8 feet up, on the Hammer, with a round UNDER the hammer and not discharge.  ALL of the previous changes such as the two position Cylinder Base Pin, Hammer Nose Block (Gun you are looking at has a weird looking BLOCK thing in the front face of the hammer) and now the even stranger Retracting Firing Pin.

In the past, Uberti has always gone back to the Basic configuration of the hammer to mime the original COLT pattern, hence the basic hammer has been available.  With the "new" enhancement, Uberti may well not do that.  Uberti has a habit of not supporting previous iterations of a design "feature."

Uberti also phases changes, enhancements and other stupid stuff over time.  A specific item, enhanced, will be introduced to production as existing quantities of the "old" item are used.  Thus, there is no accurate answer to specific "when" questions are asked.

Uberti had that safety hammer back in 1973, bought a Navy Arms 1875 Remington with it and another in 1977. I bought Navy Arms all steel Cattlemen (Colt SAA Clone) BP Frame in 2001 that did not have that safety hammer.  Surprised that hammer is again being used.
