Winchester revolver in GOTOW
« on: November 23, 2023, 12:54:21 AM »
The current Guns of the Old West issue has a neat article on the Winchester revolver.  You know, the one they designed and maybe built a few but then stopped so that Colt would stop making the Burgess lever action (so the story goes).  I had only seen a small black and white picture of one once.  This is a nice article with big pictures of a nickled and engraved model.  Various circumstances indicate it "may" have been Bohlin engraved and "may" have belonged to Tom Mix.  I don't think they ever mentioned who actually owns this gun.  I didn't read it word for word but scanned it fairly well.  I don't subscribe due to the price - I look at them at the newstand, usually my local Walmart.  This issue has the "Golden Spike" engraved Pietta revolver on the front cover.

Uberti couldn't reproduce a Merwin Hulbert at a reasonable cost, but they might be able to do this one and I'll bet it would be popular but they would probably never be able to get a real one to reverse engineer.

 :) Hey Abilene  ;)

And a Happy Thanksgiving to ya  :D

Absolutely no interest in a Winchester revolver.  However I think it's a crying shame it would be so so so dam'd expensive to tool up to make a Replicant of the Merwin Hulbert.  Especial with the "Skull Krusher" grip and the posibility of interchangeable barrel length.  Oh Well.

Yep.  My dream gun would be the opentop, scoop flute, short barrel, skull crusher grip model.  :)
The sample gun Mike Harvey sent to Uberti was a top strap model with plow handle grip, so that is what they would have made first, and we'd have had a wait for the other.  But all for naught.

Happy thanksgiving to you also!

A membership to your local library will give you access to Overdrive. A newer version of the service is called "Libby". There are books and magazines available in several formats, audiobooks, eBooks, and traditional printed books. I prefer audiobooks and have listened to hundreds. A library membership is a good thing.

Thanks for mentioning this! I use Overdrive/Libby for audio books quite often and I've read a couple of magazines and ebooks there, but I didn't know that they had GOTOW. Now I'll get to read it too!

Thanks!

Mark at Cinnabar Ranch did a piece on one of his U Tube vids a while back about the Winchester revolver.

 :) The Choir  ;)

OK.  I gave in.  I caved.  While I was aware there was a Winchester Revolver, I have held no interest.  Until now.  Until this thread.  So I went researching (Google Foo) and found the Beast.

I can understand why the Winchester Revolver had Colt real nerky jervous.  Way ahead of "others" as far as "features" go.  Well and truly advanced.  While I wouldn't be much enamored of the Grip, it would be outstanding for a one-handed or Weaver stance shooter (I know, no Weaver yet).  Colt and S & W eventually mimed the swing out cylinder.  Whooda Thunkit.

Howdy Obscure Gun Aficionados,

I think that Winchester did Colt a big favor as I believe that the Colt lever gun was considered second rate compared to the Winchester. It's my understanding that the Burgess uses a similar feeding system to the finicky Lightening. The foregoing is based on my (always questionable) memory. Perhaps the more knowledgeable here can enlighten me.

Here's an article well researched that touches on it, although you have to read it all:

My top wish would be a pair of Remington 75's in 38-40. I suppose I could have the new 9mm version or the 357 version bored out, but I'd prefer it done at the factory. Cheaper that way. I bet 38-40 would sell more than 9mm.

And while we are talking strange, how about an 1865 patent for a swing out cylinder
