The bottom one is a US Army issued M-1899.................. hardly a speck of blue left........................

Those M1899s are scarce! What a find that was!!! It looks perfect just the way it is.

I think I know that M1902 you got there-DA trigger rivals anything we could possibly compare it to!!!

Here are mine  the hand ejector was my Dads circa late 30's

Those are nice!

I always wondered why the .32-20s were so popular back then. Never heard a very good explanation, but I would like one!

I've got a match to M-2's 32-20, but not as pretty, blue is pretty spotty on mine. Handy little revolver, though. It's the only Smith I have that counts as "old" in this board, all the others are "new-fangled 1970's " guns.

Pony, I know the 70's seem like just yesterday. Most people would call that old though! The General already hijacked the thread with the Uhberties, so might as well show the 70's S&Ws. Heck, I was going to start posting pics of Colts! :D

Colt's you say?  Well now, there are more old Colt's in the safe than Smiths.  I still use many of them for Zoot shooting (and yes I also use the M & P in the last post for AZSA).  I have at least got enough in .38 Spl. that I no longer have to drag out the .32's.  In fact I've got a pair of Army Specials in 32-20 I should really find a new home for.

My hands down favorites are the large frame New Service Colt's in .45 Colt and ACP.  Used one of these at the last Grand Muster to good effect.  My local Cowboy club The Sand Creek Raiders also has a match we call Professionals (after the movie, we called it Wild Bunch for years until SASS stole our name.)  This game even predates Zoot by ten years, you can shoot anything up to 1921 (you know, the year the Thompson became available) and Cate and I both shoot a brace of New Services' in this match.

I am more interested in my old Colt DAs.  From 1877 to the New Service.  My favorite is my New Service 38-40.  A photo of me shooting it in Kansas at the KVC 2-Gun is on the cover of the latest NCOWS magazine, The Shootist.  Of course, as is my bent, I was shooting BP instead of smokeless...

Yes, you do know it, and it does have a really sweet trigger! I've shot plenty of guns with worse triggers, but never any better!

When I got the 1899 I thought about trading the M&P, but is just so sweet I couldn't stand the thought of parting with it.

Someday before I die I am going to shoot some Zoot! New Service shooters-now that warms the heart some. Seeing how they hit the market in 1898 I'm sure they saw much black powder back in the day.

I had wondered what type pistol was used to win Brigade Expansion Era Champion. Now I know-a Colt's New Service! :D

You probably know it, but the round butt K Frame .38spl , AKA M1899/M1902/Model 10/Military and Police Revolver holds the record for the longest period of uninterrupted production of any current American firearm -116 years!

The latest version-

...and counting!

Actually I wasn't aware of the record, but it makes sense. When something is that good why change it?

I care not weather you what to discuss S&W or Colt.
Let us actually get the definition of what the term "old" is? And how it relates to CAS.

But, Blair, in this forum we're usually discussing MAS, Military Action Shooting, so many of the DA's from the turn of the century up to WW1 fit in, as well as the virtually identical models produced for years afterward.

pe,

Ok, and yes I understand.
My question is how many years later, after WWI, does "old" qualify to be classed as "old"?

Hmm.. For S&W, I'd classify WW2 and earlier as "old", since after that they changed to the "short action" design. For GAF purposes, any S&W round butt, with the "pencil barrel", in the 6 shot .38 frame is basically identical to the 1899, so it's good. For Colts, since the 1892 is legendary for it's "reliabilty" , we have been allowing later Colts on the .41 frame, pencil barrel, no shroud, for a substitute. But not the Police Positive, since it's post 1900.

Blair!!

When were you born??  That might be classified as old??  Is it germain to this discussion??  This has been a great thread to follow  ;D

Coffinmaker

PS:  I haven't had occasion to fondle, shoot, or mess with any of the "old" S&W guns since I left the Military.  Surprising as it may or may not be, we (the USAF) were still lugging the M&P Viet Nam and for quite a few years after.  Unless there has been a relatively recent change, the US Bureau of Prisons is still stocked with a gazillion M&Ps.

I got this circa 1925 5" .38spl M&P in a package deal for $175. Just gave it to my daughter when she turned 21 and she wants to fire it at a GAF shoot! :D

I need to get new pictures. All the pictures I have of the S&Ws have either Colts or Winchesters in there!

I hope you feel badly about stealing those two!  Nice set!  As an aside, the Nebraska Safety Patrol used to issue .351 Winchesters.

Not to worry, Charles , we won't discriminate against Colts and Winchesters here! Just try to be sure there's no Glocks in the group!

That's great-no Glocks! I'm actually a "Gunsite Academy" trained instructor for the Glock. They perform magnificently, but still ugly and boring and my old fashioned wood and steel guns will do anything I would ever need them to do anyways.

The .351 is a first year gun and was a "Buy It Now" on Auction Arms for $175.00! Crazy! :D

The Smith & Wesson was thrown in on a deal with another Marine. $325 for a beautiful nickle 1931 Colt's Detective Special and $175 more for the Smith and he wanted to sell both right then and there, so I went ahead and bought them both! :D
