Gunsmithing / Measuring mainspring strength
« Last post by Navy Six on March 21, 2024, 11:13:33 AM »
I intend to conduct a series of tests on Colt style percussion pistols in regards to mainspring strength and its affect on percussion cap performance. I would like to accurately measure and compare a variety of mainsprings. I do have a trigger pull gauge and considered measuring that as I swapped out different mainsprings on the same gun. Is there a better way of doing this? I don't want my results to be based on "well, this spring feels heavier than that one". Any thoughts would be appreciated.

As I will be unable to attend the convention this year, will there be video recordings of the seminars?

Hopefully not on the 11 o'clock News.

Spencer Shooting Society / Re: spencer bullet selection

I bought a Chiappa Spencer in 45 Colt two months ago. I had on hand a box of Missouri 255 Keith cast bullets coated with hi-tek coating. I loaded them to exactly 1.6 inches. Mine has ran almost perfect from day one. If I work the lever with authority it feeds and shoots like a champ. Sometimes the very last round in the tube gets a little fussy but it’ll still feed. At first it was a learning curve on how to work that lever. Don’t baby it. Now that I have probably 300 rounds through it it is smooth as butter except for that very last round sometimes.

Yes, to be clear, I just want a cut down stock, NOT a complete rifle.  And I would NEVER cut down a full length stock.  I did once cut down a full length .50-70 once since the last nine inches was absolute sewer pipe.  Still haven't figured out how that happened.  The rest of the bore was nice.  By the way, it WAS a nice picture of a long wrist stock.

Well hit 76 here this afternoon and just beautiful. Took the g'kids to the gun range today and had a great time. Nice to see I've finally got the Uberti 66 running again, man it is smooth. Kids liked it too.

Very nice, time well spent mentoring young people in shooting sports. I applaud you.

Was 75° high this afternoon, it will warm up to 80° high tomorrow the cool to 70° Friday and Sat.

And I can't read.  Ewige is eternal and Jager is hunter.  i read Slim's reply as Ewige is eternal hunter, which got my history/folklore wheels going and was thinking of linquistic connections to Herne the Hunter and Cernunnos (those two are linquistically related and are both depicted as horned hunters).    Regardless, it was a fun dive!   Welcome to the group!
