weight loss effect on uniform
« on: March 18, 2009, 11:16:57 PM »
I just started weight watcher and lost 7.6lb in the first week.  In a year i hope to drop down from a XXL to a L.  About how many sizes can a uniform frock coat be brought down?

Oh, making a uniform smaller is no problem. Mine seem like they get smaller all by themselves just hanging in the closet. (BTW, that weight you lost? I found it. you can have it back if you want.)  ;D
Seriously though, depending on how much you loose, you have a couple of options. You can have it taken in. A good seemstress can do wonders. Or you can shrink it. Some wools will shrink a lot just from the sweat you soak it with in the summer. Others won't shrink much even soaked in HOT water. I'd save the shrink option to use if the tailor can't take it in enough. And then I'd be very carefull about it. You could go from a XXL to a childs Sm. in a twinkling  :o

I would say be careful how much you take in and ask the semastress if she can keep the xtra fabric vice slicing it away.

Once the excess is cut your uniform is smaller and with some exceptions very hard to make larger again.

My Mom has done amazing things with arm length and back area work where she left extra fabric to lets things out or lower sleeves when needed.

Saves money when weight comes back or say your new work out routine adds more shoulder and back muscle mass.

PR, I don't ever have to worry about takin' up clothes, It's always about letting them out. It's hard for me to take weight off and keep it off. I really like to eat and with diabetes it's hard to mamage my weight on a regular basis.

By all means - talk to a seamstress or a tailor and ask about having darts put into the garment.

A 'dart' is a sewn-over fold, used to alter fit without removing fabric and in the case of wool, is a good way to ensure your uniform's fit.

Why do you want your uniform to fit properly anyway, do you have something against realism?

Reminds me of the cartoon of the Supply Sergeant handing a stack of clothing across to a recruit while saying:

I thought uniforms were supposed to fit like this...(Old Top) He tells me my clothes are always too tight. Old Top often looks like a bag of rocks..heheheh   but I guess he likes room to move around..

DN, how are ya pard?

With the new USCG weigh-in system my work out routine has doubled.

I weigh less and have less body fat; however, my shoulders and back have expanded some.

C'est la vie!!

Yep!

You have to go to China somethine. The security gaurds have one size uniform that's garanteed not to fit anyone!
