Title: Tell me about your guncart
Post by: Lee Melone on September 01, 2004, 06:47:15 AM
Just finished building my guncart this weekend.  Thought you might get a kick out of it.

Yeah, she's a little heavy.  I always seem to overbuild things.  Tilted back in "travelin' position" I can see over it ok.  Room for 5 guns inside the rack, but wouldn't you know the old 97 I just bought is a long barrel and won't fit in the rack!

Haven't done the decorating yet, but was thinking of a Farmers Almanac instead of Sears & Sawbuck.  Oh, and it still needs a vent.

3 legged folding camp seat fits nicely inside.

I built it myself. It is a modification of one that Rolan Kraps designed.

I made mine from a Toys-R-Us wagon. It works fine, but I'd like some bigger diameter wheels on it for rough ground.

No pics. My friend made mine from plywood, scraps and some pine. Wheels aren't big enough, but maybe over winter I'll change that. Gun rack is upright, holds six long guns of which two spots are for SxS's. It has a removeable ammo box large enough to hold ammo and other accessories. The upright is held to the lower section by two large bolts and nuts with washers inside and out. This knocks down low enough to fit under the Tonneau cover of my pickup so it can be kept out of the weather while traveling. It's also fairly light weight...........Buck 8) ::) ;D ;D

Built mine myself offin one of Rolan Kraps designs,........ I changed the boxes, made the main one bigger and changed the back one to a half sized leather cantle bag I made, I also added some D-Rings to tie off stuff like blankets, rain gear, other coats canteens, and whatever else will fit....... , then added a slot for another gun............

Up here in Grandmother's Land, gunz haffta be carried under lock and key. Since I travel to matches often and stay in motels, this ment haulin a gadzillion cases and boxes from the house to the truck, the truck to the motel room, back to the truck, unpacking at the match, and then doin the whole thang in reverse to go home.

So I built me guncart with a removable, locakable front, drawers fer all the different ammo, and a compartment up top fer stuff like ear plugs, glasses, 'n' such.

It's big but it does the job 'n' all in one box.

I built mine from plans that Rolan Kraps has on the web. It's a first cart and I built it to see what it would entail, and now I am planning some mods to make to it.

I built mine so it breaks down to fit in the back of my Subaru.  First one I built is getting a bit "ricketty" and needs to be replaced.  Next one will still be a break-down but will be built to enclose the long guns for bad weather matches.  Doesn't happen too often, but nice to keep the guns protected from the weather.

As I get fat and feeble, I appreciate a smoother ride.  A couple of our posse members designed and market these nationally. Holy Terror takes a better picture than I, by far.

Nice piece of furniture there, TB!

I've been thinking about designing (another ;)) cart, one with a removable rifle rack that can be put into a bracket mounted on a wall, so it can be used as both cart and display.  Still playing with the idea.

Yeah.. after you sweat and struggle and make something really nice, ya hate to limit it's use.

The design challenge I'm working through right now is the SxS.  It needs to be broken open in the cart, but not in the rack... I've got a few ideas, but it may take actual tinkering to make it work.

Hext, just make the butt slot long enough to support the shotgun in either configuration, that should solve your problem.

I'd make the rack itself so it fit all the guns closed,........ then make an extension of the rack that stayed on the cart, so you can open the double/s....................

My gun cart stands 14.3 hands, is a pure six year old dark Charcoal colored Wyoming Mustang (almost a black mottled coat) named McGregor (got him from a BLM sale when he was about two). You can see the Spanish Barb in this horse he has a dished face like an Arabian. I don't worry about bigger wheels to make it easier for him to get around on, just new shoes every once in a while. Best mounted shooting horse I've ridden at this point in time. Carries all the guns and ammo I need and no, I didn't make him, GOD DID (Kitchi Manido). He loves people and he likes to go fast. I'll post a picture of him here next week some time, real Indian horse.

Hext,  take a look at our cart:

http://kimandbarrymckenzie.com/Gun_cart/

The "rack" is detachable.  Notice the six clevis pins that hold it in place.  Three on each side.... one attaches the bottom of the rack to the cart body, one attaches the brace to the rack, and one attaches the brace to the cart body.

Pull the six pins and the rack and braces lay nicely in the cart... after you rearrange all of the other junk that's in it.  ::)

But... to the matter of a SxS, you can see by the cutouts for the long-gun muzzles that I haddn't planned on a sojourn into classic cowpoke when the cart was made.  :-\

I haddn't thought of also using the rack as a wall rack... but now that you mention it, it does kinda look like one of the rifle racks in the sheriffs offices of the old west.  ;D

Mine is made on a garden wagon chassis.  Its heavy, and a lot bigger than most, but it has a (always) vertical gun rack for six long guns, a place to carry my cooler (a necessity), and a large possibles box that doubles as a seat.  The rack provides a back rest for the seat.  I could quite easily add an umbrella holder.  And, with the tires fully inflated, it pulls or pushes fairly easily; that's important, too.

I finished mine yesterday. I used the Gunslinger plans that are floating around the wire and went from there. I wanted the box to come off and I made a few other changes.

Mine's a cross between Barstool and Rooster.  Handmade, simple and inexpensive.  Holds 4 long guns and a cooler for a seat.  Has a small chest with 2 drawers to hold ammo and a small box at the top for my coffee.   Was made with cheap 1x6 pine.  Light and functional.

My next is going to be more exotic.  Basically the same design, but made with koa.  Wheels are used 16" wooden spoked pneumatic wheels with standard 1/2" roller bearing hubs.  Came off an old miniature car.  Needs sanding, painting and staining, but will look pretty cool.  Heavier components but will be smaller.  :)

I had to go cheap and simple!  I drive a 73 Volkswagen Bug and there's no trailer hitch on the back, so my gun cart has to be able to fold up and fit in the back seat.  This one was about 45 bucks out the door.  It holds my rifle, scattergun and my Winchester ammo box.  I made some coathanger wire hangers and I hang my tomahawk, whip and canteen, or my two liter wooden water barrel on the outside.  It ain't fancy....but it works!

Mine looks alot like M.D,'s except it not painted red. It's pine, holds 5, with a umbrella, the seat with pillow are cowhide, and it has the sass logo with my name and no. on the front box.  I have my untl. BC in gold near the handle, and a couple hook. I for my leather cowboy canteen,, the other for a Medicine bag I use for brass. I put extra stuff in a pair of saddle bags with conchos. It's a very cool ride.

Here's Mine.  It accomodates Four shooters.  The longarm rack is on a lazy susan and holds 12 longarms.  The big box is seperated into four compartments.  The rear box is a wooden cooler we built.  It's a heavy S. * B. but it does turn heads.  Me and Modern Day Cowboy built it and won EOT cart of the year 2004.

Hi, Marshal Halloway:
Where would one find the type wheels shown on the gun cart being pulled behind the covered wagon, shown in your picture? They look to be iron tired, wood wheels. They look just great. are they available in different sizes? They look like the wheels on the two wheeled push carts that peddleres pushed when I was a kid. The picture of the cart and wagon, has my head churning with ideas.
Thanks.

No Pics of mine yet...but is a "modified CalGraf design" built by none other than Col. Mark Flint also known as J. Mark Flint.  Really good guy and great example of the cowboy way.  Its take down, made of oak (so it is heavy) and 'bout the only mod I plan for it to add some PVC pipe for a beach umbrella, for some place to hide from our NC summers...

I figure that I'm never going to impress too many people for a massive collection of Western stuff or having more guns than anyone else, as my focus has been into my WW2 collection (which is quite head turning at displays) and I can't repeat the same commitment into CAS. I just don't have that much money.
I figured, however, that while I'm no gun cart maker, I could turn some heads with what I did with it afterward. My intention was to paint it a dark green color and trim it with various insignia. If there was space, I was also going to be painting a SAA on each side of it somewhere, to look like my own pistols. I also have other ideas, but I wasn't sure if there'd be room or not. I have quite a bit of experience in such things, after painting pilots' jackets and steel pots for re-enactors and veterans. I had originally intended to make it into a showcase of what I could do, something that would really stand out. I had ordered the cart from a local guy who makes good simple carts. I liked the others of his I'd seen, so I told him to have one ready for me this past weekend.
When I got there to pick up the cart, the closer I got to it, the more the realization hit me:
Holy Crap, it's varnished!  :o
I don't recall the other carts of his being varnished, but now I wonder if I just never noticed. I'd have to take it totally apart, strip it completely down then start over. As I was putting it into my vehicle, I realized that just wasn't going to happen. So, my plans have been put back only slightly. After doing some painting on it, here's what it looks like:
I will be putting other things on there as I can think of what would look good. I still want to paint a side-view of one of my Rugers, maybe on one side of the box. I'm still not sure yet. I have the "CAS guidon" insignia on the handle sides, if you look closely.
Check out my website, it'll give an idea of the kind of stuff I can do, even if it's really not CAS-related:

Attached are pictures of a gun cart I've just completed for myself. The tool box is removable. I'm estimating that it cost me around $160 for materials including the tool box. Oak boards & brass hardware are expensive. A neighbor helped me with the use of his table saw. Mostly straight 90 degree cuts with the exception of the uprights & the gun slots.

I've posted pictures previously (although not in this thread) of the half-scale Red River Cart I completed last year.   This Spring I produced hoops and a canvas cover (both removeable) for rain protection ..... (Click on thumbnails to enlarge.)

(http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i219/GrantRCanada/Red%20River%20Cart/th_Cart02a-1.jpg) (http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i219/GrantRCanada/Red%20River%20Cart/Cart02a-1.jpg)

(http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i219/GrantRCanada/Red%20River%20Cart/th_covered02.jpg) (http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i219/GrantRCanada/Red%20River%20Cart/covered02.jpg)

The rather unattractive contraption at the front end of the shafts in the lower photo is something I rigged up for attachment to the shafts to hold them horizontal when the cart is "at rest", and also to afford someplace to sit down.  (The lower plank has dowels projecting from its upper ends which engage in holes drilled into the underside of the shafts, and the upper plank pivots over the top of the shafts to hold the unit in place.)

However, I am not impressed with either the stability or appearance of this system, so my next project is to make something along similar lines (as far as operation/attachment are concerned) but which utilizes the nail keg shown in the upper photo for the support system.  The whole thing will just lift up and come along with the cart when being pulled, but when the unit is "at rest" it will hopefully have a more appropriate appearance - as if someone placed a plank over the top of a barrel or keg to support the shafts and level the cart.

It seems logical that cart shafts must have been propped up in such a fashion "back in the day" (at least once in awhile) though admittedly most period images I've seen show them resting on the ground ....

You may be able to tell that I shortened the shafts a bit after the first photo was taken, and will likely shorten them again slightly to minimize over-all length for ease of transport.  Note that the shafts on original carts were often quite short - about the length of the "basket" section, if not less.  Only a single draft animal was used, with the usual harness system requiring the shafts to reach no farther than the shoulder ...

Enclosed are pictures of a removable insert that fits into the bottom section of my gun cart. I've taken a piece of rubberized-bottom outdoor carpeting and folded it to form a cradle to hold my rifle & shotgun in place. It is glued together with Barge Cement. I'm hoping it will protect the butts of the guns.

Howdy Pards

I guess I cheated, I bought mine from Bill Bower of Oak Tree, it has a large storage box in front and a box in the bottom back and a smaller box in the upper back , I did a little leather work on it and added a few do-dads and lined the gun box with green felt . I think its going to work just fine for me .

Jonhny McCrae and Rattlesnake Jack , You Pards did a Rightous job on you gun carts , they should give you years of service..
Take care and shoot Straight  ;) :D ;D ;

My gun cart is in my avatar.
Ahhh ... a true-blue NCOWS shooter: acts as his own packmule!   ;)

The main reason I built my half-scale Red River cart was to have a 'NCOWS-legal' conveyance ...
though admittedly it's just a mite cumbersome to transport to shoots, it definitely can be done,
because I made it with the axle and wheels easily removeable.   Matter of fact, I hauled it about
1200 miles to the Grand Army of the Frontier Muster at Ackley, Iowa, just last month ....
(http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i219/GrantRCanada/GAF/2007%20Muster/th_Muster07_13.jpg) (http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i219/GrantRCanada/GAF/2007%20Muster/Muster07_13.jpg)

Prior to that trip I had shortened the shafts somewhat to make it fit better in the back of my SUV,
having noted from 'period' images of these Metis carts that the shafts were frequently quite short,
in keeping with the way the single draft animal was harnessed up:
(http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i219/GrantRCanada/Red%20River%20Cart/th_c081787.jpg) (http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i219/GrantRCanada/Red%20River%20Cart/c081787.jpg)   (http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i219/GrantRCanada/Red%20River%20Cart/th_jefferys2.gif) (http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i219/GrantRCanada/Red%20River%20Cart/jefferys2.gif)

I've also rigged a new 'shaft-support and sitting-down system', as seen in the first photo above.
The previous system (visible in the photo in my first post showing the canvas cover in place) was
frankly rather 'chintzy-looking', and also none too stable as a chair ...  This version also temporarily
attaches to the shafts while in use as a guncart (top plank pivots to 'lock' it into position, or remove)
and thus just 'comes along' with the cart when moving it from position to position using a leather
strap affixed to the lower plank on either side of the keg ... just visible in the first photo.  Hopefully
it looks more 'realistic' - i.e. meant to appear like the cart shafts have been set up on a plank atop
a barrel, with another plank laid across the top to form a table or work surface ....  Have not yet
located a period image showing such, but it seems like a plausible thing to have done, and at any
rate this system is definitely much more solid for sitting down!

Your rig looks good, Jack. The barrel is a nice improvement over the other brace. It looks more plausible, not to mention more stable.

Awful nice lookin’ werk.  I’d just hate ta push (pull) it some places I shoot. Ya need small ‘n light.  Real muddy in places too.

When I was a kid, Mechanics Illustrated had plans for a scale ‘03 curved dash Oldsmobile.  Really like to convert them plans o’er to electric motivation ‘n make a gun cart outtah the thing.  I’d have ta have a trailer to take it places but that ain’t difficult ta come by.

Thanks for the kind words, Gents!

Awful nice lookin’ werk.  I’d just hate ta push (pull) it some places I shoot. Ya need small ‘n light.  Real muddy in places too.

Well, Arcey ... 'muddy' ... or even worse ... was a very traditional set of conditions for the original carts,
so I'm OK there, I think ... (click to enlarge)

(http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i219/GrantRCanada/Red%20River%20Cart/th_muddy01.jpg) (http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i219/GrantRCanada/Red%20River%20Cart/muddy01.jpg)  (http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i219/GrantRCanada/Red%20River%20Cart/th_muddy02.jpg) (http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i219/GrantRCanada/Red%20River%20Cart/muddy02.jpg)  (http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i219/GrantRCanada/Red%20River%20Cart/th_muddy04.jpg) (http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i219/GrantRCanada/Red%20River%20Cart/muddy04.jpg)

FWIW, the third image above comes from the sketchbook of a fellow who was part of an 1862 overland expedition
from Fort Garry on the Red River (near present-day Winnipeg, Manitoba) to the Cariboo Goldfields in north-central
British Columbia ... about 2000 miles or so 'as the ox plods'.  (Which reminds me ... everyone keeps telling me to get
a miniature ox to pull my cart .....   ::) )
(http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i219/GrantRCanada/Red%20River%20Cart/th_usualview02.jpg) (http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i219/GrantRCanada/Red%20River%20Cart/usualview02.jpg)

Actually, as for ease of use, I've found that the bigger the wheels, the better a cart traverses rough or uneven ground.
This cart is actually quite light and well balanced, and thus pulls quite easily, which is especially noticeable when I pass all
the other folks struggling with the more common smaller-wheeled guncarts in the ruts and bumps so often encountered ....

What I was thinkin’ is them pretty wheels in the mud.  Nasty.

I’ve hoarded a dozen ¾ X 24 plywood disks.  Broken from wire spools from the building under restoration next door to my office.  I build carts from plans supplied by Russ N. Hound on kansascas.com I’ve modified.

If  I ever get back to the state shoot, I’m buildin’ one just wide ‘nuff for two long guns ‘n usin’ the salvaged disks for wheels. There’s one stage set there ya walk straight up ta get to ‘n ta leave ya walk straight down on a red clay path.  My four wheeler ain’t real heavy but I thought it was gonna drag me down the hill ‘fore we made it to the bottom.  The incline is such the cart rode on it’s hind wheels all the way down.  One slip.....................

Boot Strap, thanks for the kind words pard.  The stagecoach fills the back of the old Ford Pick-up if that helps pard, lol.  I would guess the weight at about 45 to 55 pounds and it is made mostly of pine.  The wagon wheels are the most expensive part of the creation so, you may want to look around to get the best deal possible.  I had a pard tell me it's probably a little under 1/4 scale?

If you're interested in the plans for this thing, (instructions, diagrams & photos) shoot me an email (eosimages@suddenlink.net) and I will get them right out to ya pard.

Seen one of them coaches, up close ‘n personal, built from those plans by Texas Ant, Mechanicsville, VA. Very, very nice. Ant tells me he got some technical advice from BW by phone.

Me? I wouldn’t attempt it. Ant is a craftsman. I’m a hack with a jigsaw who knows his limitations.

That's a fine lookin stage!!!

Meanwhile, for something entirely different, I put this lightweight cart together.

four guns, folding, removable integral front "box" bucket.

Wheels and handle are salvaged from a an old "goat cart".

Bucket serves as ammo tray and cooler with a foam insert inside.

Haven't used it yet, but I think it'll be ok.

Somewhere in my junk, I have a copy of that MI issue.  Arthur Godfrey and a buddy of his were selling those cars as kits (they had the olds and a ford), pushing em to folks in the then new gated retirement communities where they woulda been legal to use.

It's a big machinist job to build one, but it wure would be neat :)

Most gun carts I've seen share a common problem, or two.  Ever since I've been allowed to carry a gun, after my 6th birthday, I've been taught that the end of the gun with the round hole is where the violence comes out.  In other words, I hate looking down gun barrels, especially my own.

To that end, I've designed a minimalist gun cart that won't require the operator to look down his gun barrels when he's moving the cart.  It's a two wheel design that folds up easily and can be hung on wall pegs when not in use.  It'll transport easily, haul all the ammo needed for a full annual match and hold up to Four long guns.  I'm making Two of 'em.  One each for my Two Sons in Law.  They are great pards to shoot with.  My daughters made good choices.

Ok, I'll post photos when I get the first one finished.

FWIW, my own gun cart has me looking down the barrels and it'll get replaced when I'm done with the first two carts.  I'm thinkn' it will become a garden tool cart for my bride.  She will get a kick out of having a cart to move her garden stuff around in.

Stand by for photos in a couple of weeks.

Not a gun cart...but, if your looking to build one quick and dirty and have something fairly solid: Target has this wooden wagon for $23.10 that is ALL wood, with wood side rails, metal axles and pneumatic tires. Hell, the tires and axels alone are worth twice the price. It's going to be the chassis for my gun cart as I need to build one by Sunday.

Orchard supply sells a slightly nicer model for $119!

Hi Y'all,

I recently ordered a cart from Off The Wall Guncarts

http://guncarts.carolinacowboys.us/

I'd like to make one, but I've just got too much on my plate right now.  Anyway, I gotta make a comment about the customer service.  FedEx dropped the ball on their end, and Gunther went to bat for me.  He got the cock-up cleared up and delivery is set for the original time, so I don't have to rearrange my plans to meet it.  When was the last time you dealt with somebody whose reputation meant more to them than your check?  Been awhile for me.  Anyway, my hat's off to Gunther.

Nice, Daniel.  Guns vertical, no lookin' down the barrels.  I like that.  Three wheeler for stability.  Another plus.  Is that a hand break I see?  I'm always runnin' late, so maybe that's a good feature for me to consider!

I like any of the carts that allow one to sit.  Can you rest a spell on the rack in the front?  My legs really hurt by the end of the day from standing.

Howdy,

I made a Valise that is about three times bigger than the Civil War Union Officer style.  It holds my ammo, my side x side scatter gun (broken down) and my spare pistol.  I also carry patches, Balistol and other needful things.  The Valise easily straps on the back of my motorcycle and although a bit heavy works well at a shoot.  I will be joining NCOWS next year so it will work for those matches as well.  I also have a wheeled cart that fits in the truck or it breaks down and fits in the "Tour-Pack" of my Harley.

Best Regards,

Panhead

Yup, 'tis a hand brake.  I use it more as a parking brake, 'cause this cart rolls SO easily a strong breeze can hijack it...

Nope, can't sit on it -- the front wheel's too small for my caboose! ;D ;D  That's why I also carry either a camp stool or a folding chair on the cart.

4 weels are not perfect on hard ground. Half bit, used with reins is pretty useful when hard slope.
I don't recommend the side held guns or need to use thick foil to avoid them moving and rattling. ;D

Daniel,  I love your cart.  I've got a stroller frame and have been trying to figure out the best way to make it into a cart.  I think I may adapt some of your ideas.  I've even got a few racks left over from my bicycling days.  Perfect!

I also like your valise Pete.

I drive a Taurus, so space is limited and I currently use a take down cart given to me by a dear friend.  It still has much life left, but is becoming soft around the edges where the pieces slide together.

Thanks for the ideas folks!

99% finished with my gun cart, made of poplar.  It was a copied design from Doc Martin combined with the Cherokee Coby Cart.  It uses plow handles to give the rigidity of Doc's cart, and folds down like the Cherokee Cart.  The plow handles attach with T nuts and easily come off; then the cart folds down.  The small box on the rear is permanently attached while the "strong box" is removable.  The Northern Tool steel wheels have bronze bushings (I installed) to reduce the hub to accept a 1/2" axle and roll smoothly.  Some cart builders are concerned with the steel wheels, but I just could not bring myself to use rubber or plastic spoked wheels.  I gave it a test ride over my gravel driveway and it rolls fine.  They are attached with pins and are easily removed - if I ever need to install pnumatic tires or something else.  Hardware is from Van Dykes Restorers.  As I get better pictures, I can add some.

I want to thank Doc Martin for answering all my questions and going out of his way to send pictures and give me construction advice.  I have never met the man in person, but seems to be a great guy.  Kudos to Doc.

Now, that's something I've wanted for years now.  That looks just great!

I'd have to sell the car and get a truck though. :(

Purty kitty too. :)

Thanks fellers. Actually, as far as dimensions, I sized it to fit in the trunk of my Audi A4 sedan. Put the seats down and it slides right in through the back. It's about 5 feet tall, but only 18 inches deep, and the wheels come off for transport. And as well as the cat, you can just see Abigail, my Labrador retreiver, peeking around the other side.

Ah .... my first grandchild will be one year old on April Fools Day .... and it fits her, too!  (Starting with her being airlifted to Neonatal Intensive Care in the 'big city" (Calgary) less than 24 hours after her birth, and spending a week there, over a "problem" which turned out to be ....... nothing!)

Just made this one for traveling. I have a 4 wheeler we use for local shoots that needs to be hauled in the Dodge 4 door. Lately with the price of gas when we go to a match far away we drive the wife's KIA (35mpg) so had to make something that would fold up and hold what we need.

Our gun cart is made by Clay Graham (http://creationsbygraham.com) and is called Ponderosa. It has room for 4 long guns, has an ammo box and a tool box. M'ette has not found time to "tool it up", but I guess when she's done with it, it will be hers....  ;D

Hi,

I don't think anybody much comes to this thread anymore.

Although it might take more time, I would go back to where you saw a cart you liked, and then use the profile of that member to send him a PM about plans .... as I said, it might take an hour or so to find a couple of plans and PM the owners, but I think you would have much more success that way ..

Best of luck!

When I can find my garage (at least the inside of it,) I would like to make me a guncart. Can't decide on the style but have some ideas.

My current cart is almost impossible to beat. Got it used for $100 and it has carried me and Old Top (and on one occasion 4 of our close friends) comfortably. It holds  5 long guns (originally it was 4 rifles and 1 shotgun, but I noched one opening to make 2 shotguns) It has a top compartment, and a large drawer, and inside of the top compartment has another compartent with a lid.

It is still working just fine

          Hey Everybody....

I have been thinking of a cart and wanted to make a cedar coffin. Thought of making a poplar frame and covering it with cedar closet lining.
The thing that is bugging me up is how to put wheels into it, with the narrower size of the base the only way I can think of is to have an axle housing sticking way out the sides of the bottom or the back side.
Can anyone give some advise on this ?
I figure it will have to be at least 15 to 16 inches at the base, flare out with shelf's at the wide part then taper back down toward the top to the first measurement. I thought of putting lips on the shelf's for ammo storage
I think some tung oil or danish oil rubbed in would make the color or the wood just pop out at ya!
I would have already started on this but being in the army all my tools are in the storage unit, so that has a big affect on what I make!!

After attending a few Cowboy matches and photographing several score of carts I decided I could build one myself. The total cost in materials was about $60 including the wheels I got from Northern. The wood is a good grade of birch 1/2 in ply on sale because it had a damaged edge($21). The ammo carrier and the cooler rack both fold up into the handle assembly and it all comes out and lays flat in the bed of my truck. I remove the guns(4) first as it is easier to store them in their cases. The accessories box in front is removable and I will pad it later for a seat. It actually is about 6" too high and would reduce the handle etc. by that dimension if I had it to do all over again. All in all it works very well and I will add more later such as a coat hanger, hand gun holder etc.

                                                                                               Rob Wright

Louie, I have built a lightweight coffin, (full sized, used as a CAS vendor merchandise display and also as a cargo box on my MC trailer)
and here's my recommendation.  Build up yer coffin box using ripped down pine sticks at the joints and to form reinforcing battons inside, and 1/4" panelling of some sort as the skin.  I used underlayment plywood.  the completed coffin is urethaned with satin exterior urethane.   Rip down 3/8" thick pine mouldings to cover the joints in the skin.  Use screws and glue on structural stuff, brad nails and glue on trim.  My full-sized coffin only weighs 30 lbs.

THEN frame up a basic, very light handcart ala the one's they used to move wooden crates and barrels back in the day and mount yer coffin on it using a couple of wingnuts or some such to secure the box to the frame of the handcart. The box would happily sit on the cart frame, but a couple of screws and wingnuts to hold it fast when used as a gun cart would unitize it but allow the box to be easily removed from the "chassis".  Then use the traditional method of attaching the wheels to the handcart chassis with a straight solid axle and clevis pin clips (again for ease of removal for transport/storage).  It'll look just like what it is, a coffin being moved about on a handcart.  Plow handles can be bought that would make great handcart vertical rails/handles.....  Interior should be kept very light.  Use simple cutout "rack" forms and either leather or pipe insulation to make upper and lower cradles for guns, etc.

here's my MC trailer with the coffin box...

It wasn't quite done in this pic.  The internal brace was temporary and is now cut out.  The trailer now has a tailgate, lights and fenders added.  the coffin box lid has a water-tiight gasket made up with white silicone and four "tool box latches" hold the lid secure for travel.  I've taken guns, ammo, clothes, merchendise, etc, everything except a gun cart needed for a three day shoot (stayed in a pard's RV) in the box, towed behind the bike.

Here it is in use as a vendor display.

Louie, been thinking about what you said about the wheel placement on the coffin and how far they would stick out.

" I figure it will have to be at least 15 to 16 inches at the base, flare out with shelf's at the wide part then taper back down toward the top to the first measurement."

Think about this, cut an axle in half and mount it on the backside of the coffin so that each axle protrudes perpendicular to the side. That way the wheels will be close to and parallel to the coffin side and although canted at an angle it would not impede the rolling ability of the cart. I can mail you a sketch if you PM me your address.

       Hey Everybody,

You know come to think of it a railroad freight dolly sits at an angle when not being used, if you put metal inserts on the bottom of the coffin and T bolts on the freight dolly all you would have to do is tilt it fore ward and the whole rig would still be attached and everything would be at a slight angle to the back.
So, All your firearms would be leaning back into their racks.

Hi,

I have been following your thread with interest, but it seems time to make myself known.

I want to build a gun cart the looks like an old shipping box/ streamer trunk, and would sit on a Railroad style hand truck.

I have bought 5' Plow Handles, but am unable to find a source for the metal parts of a Railroad Style Hand Truck

Since you have mentioned it, I am hoping you may have found some sources ...

Hi Back,

Thanks for the suggestions ... I just sent emails to both resources to see if they had something like what I am looking for ...

What I hope to do is use an old antique hand truck as a bed for an antique looking Steamship Trunk or something similar.

Of course, once opened, it would show itself to be a gunbox with yoked beds for long guns, holsters for short guns on the sides,

and ammo storage below to keep the weight low ...

          HIYA;

You know..... you could go with a freight cart all together and bypass the freight dolly at the same time!
They had larger wheels in the rear and had a regular type of wagon tounge ( like a hay wagon) if you go with a half scale model your steamer chest would be just about perfect!!
You could  also get a miniature longhorn steer to pull your cart from the above link, I think the add says the harness comes with the cart. But get ready for this......those long horns cost about 1500 bucks and up each!!
Then you would have to worry about what the RSO would say about cowpies on the firing line......

Lewie,

Good points all; and we havent even discussed how my litte Jetta would get the steer and wagon to a shoot ... so I think I will stay with the original plan.

The 'steamer trunk' will be through bolted to the hand truck with removable stove bolts and wing nuts ... so that the hand truck can go on the Thule Bike rack up on top, and the 'steamer trunk' can go in the back seat or trunk ....

I find it interesting to see how much emphasis placed on the period correct costumes and yet there are golf carts and bicycle tires, etc. used in carts and nothing is said. Those that do, that is their choice, but what makes the the atmosphere of the West come full circle should include wood, leather and materials that would have been used in those days.

There are plenty of opportunities to express yourself in this way and my choice was a coffin. The interior is capable of holding 6 guns, 2 of which can be SXS shotguns. The coffin is simple in design and function. As the pictures illustrate, the guns sit on a rack above the lower level that serves as an ammo shelf. The wagon like wheels serve as nothing more than a way to wheel the cart around.

The coffin is simple, yet functional in that it is also designed to lay down on the legs that can be seen on the back of the cart. They serve as support when the coffin is laid down and can then be sat upon while waiting your turn.

My son and I built this with great plans to make it an elaborate gun toting tool. Once we got it to the point of holding guns, function canceled further plans, and at this point there is still a lot that can be done to make it more serviceable, but this works and it will have to do...

I have a coffin shaped guncart that I bought used from another shooter. It is a factory made one by a guy who uses the "Don't Tread on Me" logo with the snake. I have been doing NCOWS lately and they don't use guncarts. It's a nice cart with larger spoked wheels which makes it to push around.

The above photos shows a slightly different type of gun cart.  Wife and I needed a cart that would haul the most in the lightest weight cart we could find.  To roll over pea gravel easily a three wheel cart was chosen. The entire cart is made from quarter inch plywood.  Bought the baby stroller from Goodwill for $15.  Had to put on new heavy duty tires, heavy duty tubes, tire liners, and green slime to allow it to be pushed around the cactus in the desert.  My son has built another cart using this cart as a model.  The photos show a foam core mockup I had to make to get all the angles correct.

     Shrapnel;

I like how you worked the sxs or single barrel gun slots into your cart, that was a very good idea!!
I was thinking of putting lidded shelfs on the sides where the angles meet, sorta like a secretary's desk to hold little things and such, maybe a 2 hinged lid (panio hinges ) if you were looking down at it, one hinge lifts the lid and the second moves it over toward the outside edge of the coffin, but then again I had no thoughts of more than 3 maybe 4 long guns. and the revolvers would go in the bottom compartment or the other side or into little slots and just ammo on the bottom in a second compartment.

If you went with a smaller sized coffin ( young adult ) it would be small enough to slide into the back seat of a 4 door car!!

When I attended my first SASS shoot last month, a guncart wasn't high on my list of needs (I still needed a rifle and scattergun at that point). But after standing for several hours in the hot sun, a comfy seat was soon a high priority.

With most guncarts I saw the seat (if they even had a seat) was an afterthought. However being of rather generous girth, and with a bum leg, in my case the seat was first priorty. So what better than to convert an actual chair to a gun cart?

Behold, the gunCHAIR!  :o

It only holds 2 long guns, but that's all I have at the moment. :D  But because they're mounted to the side, they don't point in your face when you're walking with it.

And the seat back itself is a great handle, so I don't have to worry about adding one (as I originally planned).

I started with a used (bought at a thrift store for $25) "glider" rocking chair. Removed the bottom half of the glider hinge, and just kept the chair portion. The only additions were to add the wheels and axle, construct a storage box under the seat, and add the gun holders to the back. Since the chair was used, I did need to tighten things up a bit, but overall, it was a really easy build.

The gun holders were tricky to visualize, since it's an odd shape to work with, but even then they only took about 2 hours or so to complete. The front legs gave me the most trouble. I used the original legs, sawn in half, and screwed to the chair. However, I didn't make them as strong as I should have at first. So they needed to be reinforced.

The seat already had the hole in the middle. I just removed the foam pad, the springs underneath, and added a hinged seat that is padded with foam, and covered with leather look-alike upholstery. This is the lid for the storage box.

My wife thought I was crazy when I described this to her. But now that it's finished she thinks my fellow gunslingers will be mighty jealous.

So far it's 90% complete. I also plan on recovering the original backrest in matching brown (it's an ugly blue cloth right now), as well as adding an umbrella holder, and using an idea I saw here to create foot rest out of a wood-covered bucket. Finally, I also plan on adding some period-correct spoked wheels.

The only downside so far is that it's pretty hefty. Maybe 15-20lbs, empty. So it's no good for someone with a bad back. I'm also assuming it'll bog down pretty easily. But dang, is it comfy!  :D

I'll post additional pics as it progresses if anyone's interested.

My guncart,, gosh, my is plain and ordinary.. I love some of the nice ones on this thread.. how cool...  Okay, mine is used, and it has the wheels with the spokey like stuff you might see on a cart.  Its the regular style with room for all my guns, a larger box at the bottom for my junk and shot gun shells, and a little box at the top for my wetwipes cuz I make a mess, and my bullets as I need them.  It put a new board on the front to help hold the guns in but it is a different color rignt now.  And I added some padding.  It has a  couple hooks for a bag for the brass.  Some people have the best ideas and I just enoy seeing them.  But mine is just ordinary... but I love it cuz it works..

heres mine,Radio flyer, first I added 4" to the handle. they were made for kids to pull. then I added the long gun rack.

it removes and also folds flat for transport. this is the latch that holds its angle at the axle.

this is the atachment to the wagon.

the only change Id make is making it bigger. it only holds four long guns. DR

Being that I'm just a little thing, 'bout 5' tall and 130lbs, and I'm a college student who lives in a tiny efficiency apartment, I built mine with size, storability, expense and wieght in mind. I wish a had a pic to show you. It's made out of scrap lumber that I took out of my granpapa's barn, the main frame it out of a piece of conduit, (I did have help bending that to the right shape), and has a good size removable tin box (that was at one time cooler I think my dad bought about 35-40 years ago). The only thing that LOOKS half-way decent on it is the box since I did take the time to paint it. I get mixed comments on the thing, some about how gosh darn ugly the thing is and others about how well it folds up nice and the fuctionality of the thing. With the box off, it folds up near flat and I have no problem hefting it in and out of my car by myself. It holds up to four long guns and I can fit more than I need in the box. All-in-all, it does the job it's supposed to and I don't have to aquisition help to load or unload the thing.

Very slick design Gold Canyon. It's always neat to see someone thinking outside the box.  ;)

Mine is similar got plans of internet several years ago.  Keep meaning to add cooler shelf rear between wheels.  Tray up by handls for cell phone and misc tools and a removable insert for BP C&B loading.  Also need to add side handle and umbrella holding mechanism.  Maybe a couple of eyes to hold my home made squib rod.  Made the mistake of making it from oak so it is heavy and a broke a few brass screws.

Next time unless I design something really cool I will buy one.  Have over $300 in it and it kinda sucks - my fault - just sayin like trying to save money reloading - you don't but do get to shoot more for money willing to spend.

I'm surprised more folks are not using enclosed gun boxes on their carts.
I'm new at this so the questions keep flying. Do you transport your rifles in regular gun cases and then remove them and place them in the cart for the ride down the range?

Why wouldn't you use wooden rifle cases like these....

One or two guns in each box with (or without) removable lids.

Get to the range....Set up cart....install boxes with guns already in them......GO!

I saw this cart at the last shoot I went to.

Which was very nice when it rained.......Everything for a full day of shooting was contained. Slide right into the back of a PU or a station wagon and go........

An old rusty hand truck (dolly) I cut a piece of plywood the same width as old milk crate I had laying around and bolted it to the metal shelf of the truck. Then used bungee cord to secure the milk crate to the wood, And wouldn't you know it the milk crate is just big enough for a 5 gal bucket with a swivel seat top to fit down inside it. I use that as a empty shell dump and water bottle holder, etc.etc...I got two ATV gun mounts at Academy and bolted them to the sides of the dolly and the wood shelf. I've got two canvas bags up on the handle attached with a carabiner. One has shotgun shells in it the other has pistol/rifle rounds.........total money spent: About $25 bucks.

Is there any requirements on long arms in the wagons? I've seen alot with the barrels pointed up, which is fine but I'd rather point the muzzle at the ground, seeing as how I'm 6'2" I look down into alot of muzzles walking around a shoot and while I can see they're actions open it makes me nervous.

Just checking before I put a chuck/range wagon together  ;D

I know at the shoots I have been to, the rules state action open and muzzle downrange or up.  I think this is more intended for carrying to and from the loading and unloading table, but I think it spills over to carts as well in our neck of the woods.

With that said, I have seen the "factory" guncarts made from strollers carrying muzzle down so I guess I don't know the real answer.

Yes sir I've seen the same thing for handling the firearms but not transporting them stage to stage. While I know handling a firearm pointing the barrel up is good, I feel in a cart it does not have the stability of a two legged person, hence my wanting the center of gravity low and the firearms stowed action open

I've built two of them.
The most "authentic-looking" one is is about 4 feet long and looks much like the old goat carts of the 1800's.  It holds 8 long guns, has an antique chair and has plenty of storage.  It goes with us on a little travel trailer (homebuilt) or in the back of our pickup.
A pic of it is on my website www.wildwestarms.net.
I don't know how to put a picture here.  I've tried a lot of times unsuccessfully.
Maybe I'll ask Cammille.

Adios,
Mustang Gregg

I purchased it at EOT in 2006. It has my cattle brands burned into it along with barbed wire on the handles and my sons and my aliases on the top of the ammo box. I added umbrella supports, a handle bar for oulling it up inclines and modified the gun stands to support my 10 gauge double and my .50-140 Sharps "Old Reliable". It also has an upper box for glasses, ear aids, Balliatol, etc. and a holder for a cooler. I added extra large wheels to make it easier for this Cattle Baron to haul it around. It comes completely apart for traveling. My only problem is, occasionally, a pack rat will eat the leather laces that is extra security for my long guns.   :-(

Used a Civil War style ammo box for all my fixin's. The rack removes easlily and the whole thing fits in the back of my Escape.

Thanks!

These old so called "goat carts" come with wooden wheels as seen in my pics. Gotta watch out anymore, some of the running gear/bodies on these carts are pretty tough condition. Used to get them pretty cheap when the Berlin Wall came down, but now they are much more costly than they used to be. They can be found at antique shows in the $200-$250 range. Dont know where the fellers are getting the wheels for the carts that they are building themselves but a search on Amazon brings some up @ $90 (+ or -) apiece.

I took a golf club bag, cut some of the dividers out, and strapped it to the matching cart.  I fit a scoped AR, a scoped 10/22, and a semi-auto shotgun in where the clubs normally went, and the bags on the front and sides held the ammo and magazines I needed for my match.  I wish I still had it, looks like I'll be picking up another set.

After months of gathering supplies, equipment, uniform items and material.  I've finally finished my RNWMP Mountie persona/impression and gun cart.   I wanted a unique gun cart fitting a Mountie.   The dog sled moves easily without wheels.  After a few field tests, I decide if it needs a system with wheels.

(Perhaps a team of good sled dogs would make it easier to move around ... ?   ;D  )

Now you need a "faux NWMP Model 1876 Winchester" chambered in a pistol caliber for CAS,  like the one I had made up on a Model 1873 action in .45 Colt -

Thanks, Rattlesnake!   I agree, dogs would be an eyeful in Texas.  I've been considering the NWMP rifle.  In the spring, I'll be in San Antonio, Texas for a chuckwagon event.   When I'm down that way, I always stop at Texas Jacks.  They sell the NWMP rifle.  I don't believe they have 45LC.   I think they carry 45-60 and 45-75 calipers.

Yes, I've also got one of the modern reproductions (chambered in the appropriate .45-75 cartridge) but of course can't use it in regular CAS stages ... Don't think anyone has ever made a reproduction or lookalike chambered in a pistol caliber, which is why I had the "faux" one pictured above made for me in .45 Colt ...

Here I am holding my .45-75 Model 1876 reproduction at Fort Macleod in 2012 (in my CAS persona of "Rattlesnake Jack, Scout, Rockly Mountain Rangers") when PJ Hardtack (who just posted above) and I presented a display and demonstration of period firearms -

That was a fun occasion! Firing inside the Fort which is right downtown in Fort Macleod. We wowed the crowd.

The young man in the breech clout is a for real Blackfoot who does the narrating as the kids do their Musical Ride presentation. He and the young Metis interpreter were happy to fire as well.

Actually my rank is that of a Srjt. of Royal Engineers. The Crown was accorded to RE Srjt's due to their specialized qualifications. I was there ostensibly to inspect the Fort at the behest of the NWMP.

Alas, historical re-enacting gets discouraging when there is not much interest forthcoming from historical venues. There is not much appreciation in the form of recompense or monetary assistance.

Volunteerism wears off pretty quickly when it entails lengthy drives. Here in Gold Rush country (where I live), we have done events with as many as 15 re-enactors over a 10 day period from as far away as the American Gulf Islands. When you consider that the venue site is a 12 hour drive from the US border (AFTER a lengthy ferry ride), and some coming from Vancouver Island, it is a monumental task to assemble and organize an event.

We had a hard core group that eventually wore out. "Rattle Snake Jack", my wife and I were the only ones who crossed over from re-enacting to CAS because we were into it before we became re-enactors. Back in the day, they were one in the same for us - living, cooking, sleeping under canvas under all weather conditions.

It was fun, but eventually the burn out factor caused folks to drift away. Now I wear the uniform for dinner at CAS events only.

As well as the "Mountie Carbine", there was the 1979 "Spanish Contract" 1873 carbine in .44-40. This carbine was likely developed in lock-step with the 1876 carbine?

http://rarewinchesters.com/gunroom/1873/M73-027029/details.shtml

In 1878, when the NWMP were looking for a repeating carbine in a military calibre, the 1876 full stocked carbine was already in production, and popular in the American West. The first lot(s) purchased from I.G. Baker of St. Louis  with a branch in Ft Benton had commercial rear sights. It was reports from the field that resulted in the adoption of the "Spanish Meter" military style sight in 1882, and a stronger barrel to frame "shank". Later in 1882, the earlier 200 carbines were retro-fitted with the Spanish contract sight by force armourers.
