A Homecoming....
« on: December 06, 2019, 02:53:15 PM »
About 15 years ago, I gave my son a couple single actions:  an 1860 Richards-Mason in .44 Colt/Russian, and a 5" Wells Fargo model 1875 Schofield in .45 Colt/Schofield.  A few months back, I got the 1860 R-M back.  to go with my .44 1872 Open top.

Well, he misses the 1860 after all, so its going back to him, BUT he is giving me back the Schofield!  I think I got the better end of the deal.  Yeah, its a different caliber than the 1872 Open Top, but I don't think I mind a bit.  I'll be like Rafe (Tom Selleck) in Crossfire Trail.  AN 1872 Open Top and an 1875 Schofield.  I get it back tomorrow.

Bummer TL.

Only one thing to do.  Find someone with an already sussed 44 Open Top and convince 'em they really need a Schofield.  Make a trade.  An offer they can't refuse, so to speak.  Or just whack 'em over the head and make off wid da Open Top.

I'd offer to help, but I only have two Open Top actions and each of those actions are set up with three different calibers, 45, 44, n 38.  That allows that I can shoot at least 9 different cartridges on the same tuned action.  All Kinda different Suppositories you betcha.  I don't very often shoot Suppositories though.  The Open Top, once sussed, is darn'd versatile.

Well, I am very partial to Schofields (since I no longer shoot BP or subs). One of my first Cowboy Chronicle articles I penned was in 1996, was about the newly acquired Navy Arms Schofield in .44-40.  I had it engraved with my alias by Texas Jack Lehman, rest his soul...

For now, I will pair it with the .44 Russian 1872 Open Top Sort of of like  "Big Thumper and Little Thumper."  Also, if I choose to keep the 1872 (it is an author gun) I can get a .45 barrel and cylinder for it.  If not, I think a .45 "Saber River" Kirst Konverted 1860 would be neat, too.

When you think of it, the original .45 Schofield 230 grain 28 grain black powder load at 825 fps was about equal to the .45 ACP in thump.

Used to shoot with a guy, Lanky Lester, wore a cavalry outfit and shot one OT and one Schofield from flap holsters.  He wasn't fast, but had fun.

LOL!  I have an 1881 half flap cavalry holster.  Its for a long barrel, so the 7.5 Open Top will be in the half flap and the 5" Schofield will be in a slim jim.  This is my rig (minus cross draw).

Here's my parodical "son"(gun) returned... I doubt if it has 100 rounds through it, and has been a safe queen for 15 years.  Virtually mint.

I am trying to remember when I first got this Schofield.  I think it was early 2000's, maybe 2000-2002. I got it for a Cowboy Chronicle article from Taylors.  It was my second Schofield, as my first was a 7" 44-40. I got this because it was a Wells Fargo 5".   MY kid has had it for over 15 years...
