I ran across these and grabbed one.  Really like the "Old Silver" finish.

Those are really nice. Good grab. I was talking to Lee about them the other day. He thinks Pietta uses an alloy with nickel in it so they may be less apt to corrode.

Nice!   I really like mine.  I got one in 2014 as a graduation present to myself.   All I did was replace the nipples and it is a great shooter.    I hated the grips.   Worst of what Pietta puts on them, no grain and the darkest red of anything they use.   I looked and found a couple of originals on line that had a flattened pattern that matches the pistols profile and a few had inlays in the grip.  I opted for both.   Here with a Texas sized bowie I made from a corn knife.

A little information here.  The "Old Silver" finish is also present on the "Marshal" 1851 44s, and the Capt. Schaeffer replica and now several other(s).  The finish is actually highly polished steel that is then heat treated.  At least, that is my understanding.  There was, at one time a misconception those guns were Stainless ... NOT.  And they WILL rust if not cared for properly.

I currently shoot a whole pile of the Pietta guns of that "Finish" and really like 'em.

PS:  RE: THE GRIPS.  Recent built (last couple years) of Pietta 1851 replicas now sport a grip of more Colt portions.  The old "Trombone Bell" grip are GONE!!

There are a few examples of factory 'engraved' pistols. Maybe copy one of those for the fun of it? This is one looks like it was stamped rather than engraved but it is verified as having been done at the factory.

Although not corrosion proof, polished then heat treated would certainly make a durable finish. I wonder how that holds up compared to CCH?

It's good to know the newer grips are a more realistic shape.

I have read this in a number of places, and yet this is the best preserved one known to exist.  (and the price!)  That frame looks CCH to me.  Could be an uneven faded blue I guess,  but it sure does not match the rest of the gun.

I've been thinking the same thing. Here's another example of some stamping. I wonder if this was factory also. It's pretty cool. It would take a mighty small stamp to do that. Maybe a modified letter stamp would work. Or a center punch. I'll give that some thought. This type of stamping is a lot like border stamping on leather.

I was thinking the same thing Marshal, it's very much like leather stamping. You could use the "V" from a small letter stamp set. Also the "I". I good center punch would also work and maybe, if it was hard enough, a small hole punch to create the circles like in the first one you posted.

I'm going to have to experiment a little. This would look really good on my current project.

I thought about hardening the tip of a small leather stamp but all the stamps I have are much bigger than what they used. The steel in them probably wouldn't be adequate. I wouldn't want to sacrifice a good tool unless I was sure it would work.
