Help for a Newbie
« on: February 03, 2020, 10:09:45 AM »
ALL:
I have a Shiloh 30 " heavy octagon 50-70.  I bought it about 10 yrs ago when I had money.  I need a primer on how to make it shoot.  I have an article in BP Cartridge mag written by Mike Nesbit on the 50-70.  From a cold clean barrel, the first 5 shots grouped at 1 o'clock 6 inches high and 4 in group at 55 yds.  425 gr 63 gr of KiK 2F.  Factory iron sights.  After that it went down hill.  Please point me in the right directions.

Get the book written by two campion shooters called ?SPG Lubricants BP Cartridge Reloading Primer? by Mike Venturino and Steve Garbe. They explain how and why step by step.
Little powder much lead shoots far kills dead.

Does the 9th addition have enough updated information to warrant purchasing if you can get a 1996 version?

Joe, what lube are you using and whats your load?   You say it went downhill after 5 shots but what are you doing about fouling....wiping between shots?  Wiping after 5 shots? Etc.

Sam:  I have not been wiping between shots.  I am used to my 38-40 with SPG lube and the proper bullet going 50-60 rds between wiping and still maintaining 5" groups at 75 yds.

Try it or at least every 5 shots.   I think fouling is your problem.   Also, you might consider using a blow tube and use it between shots cause its awful dry air there in Lamb County which makes for hard fouling.  I like Napa cutting oil diluted 10:1 for a wiping fluid.

Also, what powder are you using and are you using compression?

I built me a blow tube.  I have Goex 2F, 3F, KiK 1.5, & 2F.  It did not like the KiK from the start.  I cast some 446 gr bullets from a Lee mold yesterday.  I have a Lyman 515141 from Midway in route.  I would like to try OE, but no one within 150 miles sells BP by the can and I dont want to find storage for another 10-25#.

What does your bore slug out at?  Some of those bullets may be too big for the Shiloh.

The 2f Goex or the KiK should be okay....either need about 1/4 in of compression to work right.  Use a drop tube if you have one...if not settle by touching the case against a vibratory cleaner.

If push comes to shove you could always duplex by using no more than 10% smokeless in the form of 4759, Rel 7, or similar burn rate powder under your blackpowder.   If you do this don't compress the load more than about 1/16 in.
