FYI, you have to vote for both at the same time.  I'm stuck with just one vote. Sooo sad. Haw! ;D

I voted for Ruger because they are the best ;D but seriously I like them for their toughness and dependibility.

Ruger.  With Eagle Gunfighter Grips they point real well for me.  I don't have to search for the sights.

Ruger 4-5/8" Vaquero and a Ruger 4-5/8" Bisley Vaquero. Both blued in .44 magnum. I had them both before I got into the sport and they do double duty as ranch/hunting guns. Can't beat them for strength, reliability and affordability!

Roogers! Cause thats what I got.  ::) I bought my first Rooger back in '74 it wearn't a CAS pistola though. A nice little SS Security Six .357. I came with a 4" barrel an' I had it changed to 6". Shot bullseye and silhouette fer more a few years. Next "76 come the Super Blackhawk 44 Mag. 7 1/2" Blue. I carried it around on every hunt fer ever. I did the slihouette thing with it too! When I went half blind an' plum crazy I put'm away fer 'bout 15 years. A few years back my buddy was getin' outta the gun business an says last call. I aways wanted a '94 Win. as a companion piece fer the Blackhawk. So now I got 2 cowboy guns. Well, 3 really cause I already had this '94 Win Musket NRA thingy! Next thing I know I'm holding a Bisley and it stuck to ma hand. Well, hoot I got 2 hands, had ta have 2 Bisley's 44 Mag Vaquero's 5 1/2" a course. Then along come a SXS and for I know it a brace a '58's NMA Sheriff's. Leather, Duds, Ammo and such, I had forgotten how much I like to reload, ma boolet bags weights near 80#. I can hardly get up in the PU. An I still got brass ta load! Geez, I think I'm outta control! But lovin' it.  ;D ;D ;D ;D Yeee Haaaaa!

I like the Colt's becaus they have the look, the feel
the heretage of the Cowboy idea.
If i'd want strength i'd by a Freadom Arm's
The Remington C&B for their dependibility because
i never had a malfunctin with my -58

Rugers for durability/reliability/price.

Colt clones for traditional looks, and they just feel better in my hands.

I voted for Other.. cause I just enjoy shooting my Rems so much right now.  They are better pistols than I deserve... and no, you can't have them ;)

I also plan to like my new Opentops in 45 Schofield.. so Other gets some reinforcement.

But I would have voted for Ruger as well.  I've got a pair of RVBs and I never, ever worry about how they will shoot and if they will work.  They just don't have the panache' of the Rems, or Opentops, or even Replicas..

Adios,

Definitively my Rems '58, go feeling, never had a single problem with them, most of the time used C&B but sometimes with a convertion cylinder( do I have to mention the brand? well, it's only two initials  ;))

To me it`s Rugers only because of the durability and price. That also goes for my off-topic big-game rifle.

My first singleaction was a SuperBlackhawk. Before CAS, the fun part was heavy loads. When I started with CAS I used my Super for a while, then changed to a Schofield. But my hands ain`t to big, so i didn`t like the grip for duelistshooting. Then I changed to 5\5 Vaqueros, and hopefully that will be my last trade.

Once in a while I shoot cap & ball, and then I find the Remington 1858 very reliable and accurate.

I am shooting Ruger Bisley Vaqueros as my main guns.  I like the grip and the lower hammer for shooting duelist. I was shooting 1875 Remingtons mainly until I got the RBV's. The Remingtons point  well and fun to shoot but I was having problems shooting BP with them so I got the RBV's.

It's all good. But Ruger has been the gateway for more shooters getting into CAS than all others combined. The vast majority are very shootable out of the box and a set of Wolff springs makes them very smooth. I love the way my Schofields shoot, but I want to be buried with my RV's.

Hext, I have and like them all ;D  but you said "favorite"  so I picked "other" since my favotites are my Smith & Wesson New Models.

I shoot my best groups with my Vaqueros.

Like my Colt Clones pretty well and shoot them on occasion.  But my favorites are hands down the Smiths.  Now if someone would just make a clone ;D

I've been a fan of the Colt SAA since I began watching westerns as a kid.  I still think they're the best.  Between my wife and I we now have eight of them.  But...just got a USFA

BTW, the only reason Pards pick something other than the Smith & Wesson New Model number 3s is because they have never had the chance to shoot one. ;D  If they ever do they will realize the best any other gun can be is second best! 8)

That's really a hard question.....I worked it down to two, both percussion guns, the 1860 and the 1851.....then, went with the 1851 as my favorite overall.....then had to vote 'other' as it wasn't a choice.   :'(

Got my first handgun when I was a tender age of 12, it was a brass framed "Reb" model , .36 caliber, 1851 style from Navy Arms....it was my constant companion and I kliterally shot it to death.  ;D

rugar 32's, stainless. i picked my girls because they fit in my hand very well. and the recoil is almost zero.
these were the first hand gun i touched and just had to have.
they are in consecutive serial #'s. and get this, the last 2 digits are the same as the last two #'s of my other half's and mine sass #'s. ;D
just had to have at that point.

shoot strait and always have fun.

Right now it’s a pair of Frontier Marshals in .45 Colt. from EMF.  Not  quite consecutive serials, but close enough for shootin’ work.  I fell in love with the Hartford when I won one at EOT several years back.  That's what these are, except they have the brass grip frame, that I also like.

Ruger 5 1/2 inch bisleys.  I favor the bisley frame and the Rugers are durable and inexpensive.  With a Wolffe spring kit they aren't bad to shoot either.

I would have to go with my Other vote.  I really enjoy shooting my Rodgers and Spencer and Star Single Actions.  My first handgun puchase was a Dixie Gun Works 1851 Navy, but the above mentioned pistols shoot so well for me.

I like the Remington NMA for balance and pointability. The action is shorter than anything unless it's been short-stroked. Lighten the mainspring, add a couple cartridge conversions and they're ready to go.

I like my Ruger Bisley Vaqueros and my Birdshead Vaqueros.

The Bisleys are a dream to shoot. With the 4 5/8" barrel they are not too forward heavy, the Bisley hammer is easier for my short thumb (I shoot duelist) to reach. I put Power 1/2 cock notch hammers in them and this gives a very nice trigger.

The Birdshead grips fit my hands better than any other. I don't know why this is but they just feel right. I love the short (3 1/4"?) barrels because they make the guns lighter and more responsive, very neutral in the hand and this along with the fit makes these guns point perfectly for me.

I like Rugers for CAS because, frankly, we are rough on these guns and I would hate to break one! Rugers are relatively affordable, durable, and simple enough to care for.

I like them because they are a good design and not very many in Indian Territory shoot them. The design was so good Colt stole the idea for the 1873. ;D

Right at the moment my fave is a pair of 7 1/2" 75 Remmies in .45 Colt. Nobody in this part of the world shoots Remmies, so I've got 'em on style points, and when I take my time and shoot like I know how, I don't miss much with 'em either. They even work pretty well shooting one handed (I shoot Classic Cowboy).

Uberti Cattleman; .45LC; 7.5" barrels.

Got about 8 of 'em.  7 plowhandle grips and one Bisley for long range pistol shootin'.

They are inexpensive, feel sort of like real Colts, danged reliable, and pretty.

I started with Ruger .44's for the very same reason, and still have one rifle in .44, but I've switched to OMRV in .45 w/ 5.5" barrels.  I've just never had any problems with my Rugers, and ever though I owned other replicas in various barrel lengths and calibers that pointed a little easier, every single one of them had to have some smithing done.  Rugers just work, and keep on working.
Ruger 4-5/8" Vaquero and a Ruger 4-5/8" Bisley Vaquero. Both blued in .44 magnum. I had them both before I got into the sport and they do double duty as ranch/hunting guns. Can't beat them for strength, reliability and affordability!

Just what most others are sayin'. RUGERS! ;D  My main guns are Vaquero 44-40's. Had Gary Reeder reshape the grip frame to what he calls the " Gunfighter " grip. Really fits nice in my hand. I also had a pair of RV in 45 colt done the same way, but don't shoot them much. Been shooting my 44's since 95 and have had approx. 15,000 rds through each and have never had a problem.  :D

My favorites are my New Model Army Remingtons with their R&D conversion cylinders.  I like them 'cause they feel good in my hands, are reliable and point of aim and point of impact are the same.  And they are so much fun with full cases of blackpowder.  I shoot more accurately with these than any other revolvers I have.  So they have become my main match pistols.

Colt clone.  Feels great in my hand.  5 1/2" in 45 LC.  Gripmaker "ivory" grips.  Style points galore!  What Matt & Paladin used is good enough for me! :o ;D ;D

Well, I guess if I had to choose a favorite... it would be my Ruger Vaquero Birdshead in .45LC with the 4 5/8" barrel.  It just feels good in my hand & is a great shooter.  My second choice would be my Colt Clone by EMF in .45LC with the 5 1/2 barrel.  This one looks great & is a real nice shooter as well.

For the match 2 Uberti blackpowder frame SAA's with 7,5" barrels and Grimaker's ivory grips, shooting .44 Colt ammo, because they are reliable, feel good and the price is right. For fun shooting Uberti/Colt OT's in all kind of configurations like RM 51 in .38 Spec + RM 60 in .44 Colt, RII in .44 Colt, OT in .44 Colt.

My favorites are '58 Remys with 8" barrels, bought them because I always liked the look of the piece and to me it spells Cowboy as much as a Model 60 Army Colt.   I wouldn't trade for even the best single action pistol on the market.

Well guys, mine is '72 OT Army grip in .44special. Why? Its the only one I have now. Im new to cowboy shooting. Been a flintlock shooter forever, now im moving up 100 years. BTW, Chuck Burrows is making me some of his awesome riggin's for my OT.
I will most likely be looking at a SAA in the future. My money says Cimmerion, though I like the Colts and USAF's.
I like Rugers, have had Blackhawks before in my life. Have never heafted a Ver.  The only thing, and this is fixable, Rugers seem to have 'grity' actions. But, id like to live long 'nuff to wear a Ruger out.
Wish me will enjoyin' my now OT Army .44Sp. I think iv found a hobby I can LOVE !

Been a Colt SAA collector for over 40 years, to date I own 66  first generation SAA, 26 autoloadres most 1911, for CAS I shoot a pair Colt second generation SAA NP in 45LC
My daughter "Lady Cin" shoots a pair of third generation blue SAA in 44-40.

You may say that I prefer the Colt SAA over all others :)

Safe shoting and happy trails :)

I've got several that I realy like to shoot, depending on the mood, but my overall favorite would have to be the 60' RM conversion in 44 colt.  It is the most accurate handgun I've ever shot, bar none.  Other than that probably my walkers are next.

Cimarron 1872 Open-Tops, 7-1/2" barrel, Army frame.  They are dead accurate and have a real coolness factor to them.  Had a chance recently to shoot a USFA Rodeo and one other Colt clone and didn't like the feel or the sight picture nearly as much.

My favorite is the older model ruger vequeros.  Several reasons.  OK   they are heavy, but if you accidently over charge a round while reloading, they will handle it.  Dependability, relaibility.   And one thing a lot of folks take for granted, is safety.  The transfer bar under the hammer.  If you accidently drop one cocked, not a problem.

Now, it does take some work to get it shooting just right.  New spring kits, honing the cylinders for better accuracy, trigger job, and dont forget the sight in work.  And you can go as far as cosmetics too.  I have maybe 750 tied up in each pistol.  yeah, yeah, I could have bought an original colt for that!. What can I say.

Mine are in 45 Colt. 5 1/4" barrels.  I shoot 45 colt, 45 scholfield, and even 45 auto rim out of the darn things.  Once tune, they shoot as good if not better than my colt gold cup.

Howdy!

I shoot 2  1875 Remingtons, 7.5" barrel from Uberti and an older 1873 Colt repro from AWA, that is pretty much piece for piece a copy of a 2nd Gen. Colt.  I've been told that parts will interchange.

The (Uberti) Remington(s) is(are) very nice, and has had no work done to it before I got it(them) that I know of.  The AWA I bought new and is marked "AWA Italy" under the barrel, and except for a replacement wire bolt/trigger spring, is stock.  I replaced the spring by choice, not because it broke.  It has been flawless in operation.  I have 2 of the Remingtons and one broke a non-essential "safety-for-importation" part and both have been fantastic in operation AND accuracy.  I shoot Warthog (FULL power, but safe published loads) with either BP or the occasional smokeyless loads.  If I use BigLube (tm) bullets that carry lots of lube and BP, all my guns will easily last an entire match without cleaning, but like many, the Remington design gets sticky faster.

This also holds true for my 1860 (Uberti) Army Colt as well as my 1858 (Pietta) NMA Remington C&B revolvers.

Howdy again!

I mentioned my favorite guns for CAS shooting.

I also have an old Ruger Vaquero in 45 Colt that was a factory special edition.  It started life as a 3" (and a bit) barreled gun styled like a Sheriff's model, but with the ejector housing.  It came with special Laser-cut white Micarta grips.  The action had been worked on at the factory and light (but still factory) springs installed.  Since then I added a Qualite' brass Birdhead grip (done BEFORE Ruger came out with their own B-head guns), and I've done some other things to it; but no action work - it wasn't really needed.  During its customization, the "menu" disappeared from the side of the barrel.  ::) ::)

I DON"T shoot it for NCOWS, but for just plain shooting or the occasional SASS match it comes out and it is one of the best handling guns I've ever had!  I wish   it were as accurate as my 1875s, but alas ... only my Python (named Monty) or my High Standard Supermatic Citation can claim that!

The mechanical workings and inherant safety of the Rugers are legendary ... it's as tough - or tougher  ;D - than my old M1A1 tank!

After shooting Remingtons, Schofields, Conversions and Open Tops, I've come back to my first pistols, Colt SAA's.  My Favorite SAA Clone is an Old EMF 7.5 inch barreled .45 Colt Dakota, made by Jaeger of Italy.  I can shoot Black Powder, the various Substitutes and Smokeless with no problems.  BP & Subs shoot the best out of it and it's Companion, an EMF Artillery Model.  The best part of my Jaeger is the 1860 Army Grip and Frame I had fitted back in 1989.

My next modification is to get a cone type firing pin for them.

Howdy from San Diego

I fell in love with the Colt SAA at age 6 or 7 at that time and place I was living in Tijuana Mexico, my sister and I on Saturday's Matinee cap gun in hand we fought the bad guys along side Gene, Roy and Hoppy.

Every since then I always wanted a real Colt SASS and could never afford one I grew up with my Mom playing the role of Mom and Dad.

Now I shoot a pair of  nickel plated second generation Colt SAA in .45LC. as to why I like the SAAA well the balance, the way they feel to my small hands and most of all 'cause I made my dream come true, at age 64 I'm still playing Cowboy's and Indians. :)

Only in America could I make my dream to own not one but 66 Colt SAA most first and second generation and 46 Colt auto-loaders most of them 1911 Military.

Safe shooting and happy trails :)

I started with an old Cimarron in 44-40, which promptly broke halfway throught the first box of shells through it.  I then had the pleasure of going to my first SASS match at the old Tin Star Ranch in Fredericksberg, Texas, and handing my broken gun to the best gunsmith I've ever known, the late Bob Taylor, who returned it with an action job on top of a new hand spring, even though I'd only paid him for the repair itself.

I stupidly sold it so I could have a pair of .44 mag Rugers to play the game with, but that sixgun remains the single best shooting single action I've ever owned.  Something about the bottle neck cartridge of the 44-40 made it the cleanest shooter as well.

WELL!  While buying a Ruger is certainly no mistake, neither is an AWA.  Fine guns and they'll interchange parts with a 2nd Gen. Colt ... which IS the King, after all.

AWA, EMF, Beretta/Uberti, Pietta, Cimarron, USFA, Dixie - take your pick.  They're ALL quality guns.  (But the Ruger IS the toughest and the LEAST authentic!  ;) ;) )

Cyrille, isn't this sport great!  We can have different opinions and the end result is still FUN, no matter what pistol you use!  ;D

Well Hoss, "I cut my teeth" so to speak on Ruger Revolvers, maybe I'm just an ole "stick in the mud, But to tell the truth, I fail to see why anyone who started in this sport with a Ruger Revolver would ever go to anything else least authentic or no. jmo though.

My first 5   CAS pistols were Rugers, and I still have one.  I doubt I'll ever get rid of it ... it's a FINE, smooth, good shootin' piece!  I DO shoot much more NCOWS than SASS, so historical accuracy is important to me.  Lest ANYONE get the wrong idea, howsomever - Ruger Vaqueros and New Vaqueros are legal for NCOWS use, just not the Bisley Vaquero.  But, I had never held a real SAA (or clone) until I held the AWA.  It just seemed to fit my hands perfectly!   I don't even really mind the extra size of the Rugers. (old ones - I haven't yet held a New Vaq) I just prefer the feel of the original.  My AWA was more accurate from the box than any of my Rugers, which were VERY accurate - but ALL of them shot low and left.  :-\  I dunno why.  I'm usin' the same loads that I used with the RuVaqs; 250 gr. pill pushed by a full case of FFFg!  ;)  Or, for the few times I still shoot smokeyless, the same bullet sent downrange by 5.1 grs. of Clays.

Diff'rent strokes fer diff'rent folks. :D :D

Howdy, y'all!

4 eyed Floyd, I didn't change the mainspring on mine, but I DID put one of the Wolff or Heine (from Brownell's) replacement bolt/trigger springs in my Longhorn.  It made a big difference in smoothness.  The trigger pull was already at 3 lbs. so it was fine, but the new spring made everything smoother AND it is now @ 2.75 lbs. pull.

I put the same spring in my Iver Johnson (Uberti) 1860 Army Colt.  It smoothed it up even more than the Longhorn!  I wish Wolff or Heine made the same spring for ALL my single action guns!

Ho Large Hext,

Your poll is faulty.  I won't vote in it.  It's like asking what rifle do you prefer and making "Winchester" a choice.  There are simply too many Winchesters to make the brand a choice and really poll preferences.  Same goes for Ruger.  There's too many different Rugers.

True, there are many diffrent Rugers, and to my knowledge none are true copies of any gun that was around in the 1800s. However we are discussing SAA type revolvers and that narrows the field a bit. Caliber is also a matter of personal prefference which tends to widen the field some  but in a diffrent direction. I like Rugers, particularly the older Vaqueros and I prefer .45 caliber LCs which leaves me with one gun or brace of guns and rifle caliber that I can use when shooting SASS or CAS.

my 1st pair are om vaquero's    45lc   blue,  5-1/4, my next pair are om ss in 38/357 5-1/4",  then I have an odd ball pair.  om blackhawk 6 -  3/8" barrel in 41 mag and an om blackhawk brisly in 357 7 1/2" barrel

I sure get funny looks when I shoot the odd ball pair...........but they are dead on.

Currently the New Model Vaquero in 45Colt. They really work well for me. Unfortunatelt the big batch of Winchester cowboy ammo is a bit off, not as good in these guns as the old MagTec stuff. I have huge hands, but strangely enough, I accidentally 'slipped' the hammer a lot more with the old model and my NMSBH. The Colt sized grip seems to work better for me, go figure?

I love the 45 and really like the way I can just chuck the rounds into the cylinder, the chamber opening is so big, there is nothing to catch up on, they just fall straightin with a satisfying schloooooNK!!!

Having said that, I have bought new guns, all in 44WCF (1873 rifle as well) as I intend to start shooting classic cowboy and will convert to black powder when I have got on top of the muscle memory required for the new discipline (one learning curve at a time thanks).

The guns are Piettas in 44WCF 4 5/8" Bbls with an action job. They are sweet, but I haven't competed with them yet. I won't be getting rid of the 45 NMVs until the clones prove themselves. If they work out all right, I have a NIB 44WCF Dakota clone, I will get it slicked up and use it as a back up gun.

Strangely enough I saw my 44Mag Old Model Vaquero in the gunshop I traded it in for the NMVs. Big bores don't sell well here, as they require a special permit (easily obtained, but most shooters don't bother, which I find strange). I am in two minds whether to buy it back or not, I have up trying to find a mate for it and traded it on the pair of NMVs mentioned above. It needs a good home, but apart from being my first SA it doesn't have many other redeeming features, I have an older Blued 44Mag SBH with the long barrel (10" or something like that) and a 44Mag SS/NMSBH in 5 1/2" so I'm pretty well fixed for 44s.

Decisions, decisions!

I like my Rugers because they're not just a worthless toy like so many of the imports and the NEW Vaquero.

With my OLD model Vaqueros, I can shoot target loads or the fire breathing loads that cause everyone else at the indoor range to bench their guns and come over to find out whether or not I'm firing a cannon. I can hunt paper targets or grizzly bears with the same gun. With my H-110 loads, I'm afraid to shoot paper targets too close, for fear of setting them on fire!

Yep, they are stout and go from mild to wild ammo wise.  Used to be able to buy a used OMV for $350-400 tops; now they are nearly twice that of you can find someone willing to give them up.

My first sixshooter was a cap and ball 1858 Remington from Feinwerkbau in Germany. I still shot it today. For CAS, I use a pair of USFA  Pre War revolvers in .45 Colt.

When I was a boy, I saw Robert Fuller und John Smith in „Laramie“ and later on Leif Erickson, Linda Cristal, Cameron Mitchell and Mark Slade in „High Chaparral“. Since these years I have wanted to possess a Peacemaker. That was hardly more then a foreign word for the boy in the sixties but contains all the good feelings I had and I have still tody about honesty, courage and integrity of the people in that movies.  ;)

Today, my USFA peacemakers give me all that feelings back and they are really amazing guns. Original Colts in good condition for shooting are hard to get in Germany.

It's a toss up between my 1851 Colt Navy model and my Colt 1860 Army model. From the back end, they both look and feel the same. The 1860 has more power (.44 vs. .36) but the Navy is just a hair more accurate. Both aquire the target very quickly. The Navy model is better looking but the Army model looks more business like.

Hummmmmmm.............. just one, huh? Hummmmm..............I'll go with the Colt 1861 Navy!

First time I've ever picked Navy over Army!

I am a newbee for sure so forgive me for my ignorance.  I just got into BP a few months ago but I have always loved shooting and guns.. (Weapons lol as the Army taught me).  As a Nam Vet I have shot a few "weapons" but I am NOT and do not claim to be an expert.  I just burped off and hoped I hit something that was shooting  back..  1911 and M-14.  That time was NOT fun.. M-16 was not a favorite in early 66 when I was there.  I kept my 14 as heavy as the ammo was to carry and the weapon itself.  Like the AK you can put in mud and blood and it will still fire.  Well, I am old and was early in the war and I said that and I am stickin to it. lol       Enough said on that.

Got 6 BP pistols in the last 6 months and I love them all.  Its all about fun and shooting.  My favorite is the one I am shooting at the time....    Well, I never said I was smart, just having fun and enjoying our right to have what the Constitution says.

I've shot Ruger Blackhawks and Vaqueros (Old- and New-Model), Beretta Stampedes, 75 Remingtons, and Richards-Mason conversions (.44 Colt and .38 Spl.).  My favorite all-time-ever pistolas are my Uberti '58 Remingtons with conversion cylinders and lightened hammer springs.  They fit my hands like they were custom-fitted, and I don't have to worry about lining up the sights -- they point right where I'm looking.

I like the Ruger Bisely Vaqueros the most because of the heft and laid back hammer.  I also like the fact that they fill up my hand more than a Colt replica.  That being said I also have a set of Colt replicas for when I feel the itch to shoot something different.

I shoot with a Ruger Vaquero (old vaquero) and a Pietta Clone both 5 1/2 in barrel, cal 44/40 and enjoy them. The new Piettas seem softer as the main sping has been factory reworked (Thanks Alchismita)
The ruger is "stag" gripped (W&Wwonders made) and strong hand shot, the Pietta will be stag gripped (but still smoth wood gripped) and weak hand shot.
Nice shots with and quite fast (for me) after only 5 CAS training and competition.
Not mant ranges available in France, the closest is 200 km, may be close for the States but a little far for our small country.
Regards and greetings to all from France.

I've owned and shot Ruger Old Model Bisley Vacqueros, Remington 1875's, Cimarron Thunderers and USFA SAA's.  Calibers range from 357 to 45LC and 44 WCF.  My all-time favorite revolver is the USFA Premium SAA in 44 WCF - a beautifully made gun, with excellent accuracy, fit and finish.  My favorite caliber is 44 WCF loaded with black powder.

Best is Ruger Old-style Vaquero in .45 SSTL engraved and tuned.
Favorite is original Colt Bisley made in 1902 in .32 WCF.
The inside of the grips are carved with the original owner's name, 1909 and 'Tacoma, Wash Cascade River Snow Camp'.

I suppose it all depends on the pistoleer's perspective. However as far as I can see Ruger is tops, True, it may be a reproduction of a gun that never was but it is stronger than a Colt SAA, just as accurate if not more so, but the accuratcyv is in the eye of the shooter not just in the firearm itself. A wellmade fire arm enhances the accuricy potentenal but it is still up to the shooter to hit the target

I don't think any pistol feels better than a Pietta 1851 Reb Colt in my hand, but I'll compete with my 1858 Remmies (cap & ball of course). If I was to start out fresh, and didn't live in country trying to revoke the Second Amendment, I'd purchase Old Ruger Vaqueros in .357. I shoot most everything as good or bad as another, so its just how they make me feel when I see'em. Percussion weapons keep me more honest, and watchful....

I am just a beginner (in CAS & SASS, not in shooting).
Have a BlackHawk 5 1/2 in 45 Colt, and recently acquired in trade a 4 5/8 New Stainless Steel Vaquero in 45 Colt. The Vaquero came with a Hartford EMF 1892 replica lever action rifle.

People keep telling me to go 357 and shoot 38 sp. If I could find a way switch from the 45 Colt to 357 in both revolver and rifle, I may very well do so eventually.

It'll be several months before I am set up for reloading. In the meantime, do you all recommend I stick with the 45 Colt and not move to 38 spl - 357 even given the ammo cost and rapid fire differences between the two?  I like the traditional aspect of 45 Colt, but even the SASS internet sites suggest 38 for newbies.

I am not recoil shy, but recognise that greater recoil increases the recovery time for the next shot.

Thanks,
Ron

if reloading costs are a concern go with the .38's bullets are cheaper, you use less powder(more loads per pound) and if for some reason you don't have enough ammo for a match you can buy factory .38's for about 1/2 of what a box of .45's cost.

I love my .45 Schofields. One is a Navy Arms Uberti with the 7 inch barrel special edition. the other is a Wells Fargo model made by Armi San Marcos (sp?) with a 5 inch barrel. I won't shoot any pistol or rifle less than a .45 because I love the caliber. My 1866 Yellow boy is also chambered for .45 so I can use the same rounds in pistol and rifle. My shotgun is a double barrel with exposed hammers in 20 guage. I agree that I won't wimp out with a .38. That may be the way SASS rolls but not me.

I love em all. Can't get enough of the Schofields. I love tht 3rd model Russian, but it doesn't work well with my small hands for duelist, but damn is it accurate. For BP its the 1858 remington. Of course the Colt is king. Have no use for rugers. Have owned three blackhawks, each one of them had a factory defect. Bought a mini-14 when they first came out. Couldn't get a group smaller than a bushel basket at 25 yds for love nor money. Owned 2 model 77; one in 7mm mag and the other in 338 win mag. Neither one would hold a zero; and yes that was verified with several shooters and different scopes. I do have a 10-22 that is the finest 22 that I have ever owned. Plus the fact that Bill Ruger was a liberal kinda turns me off.
I am watching with great interest the developments of the Merwin Hulbert reintroduction, thinking that I might like to give this one a try. I have never fired one but have handled a couple of the originals and they felt quite good.
Currently though, the very best feel is the Cimmaron Thunderer.

I gotta go with my new consecutively #'d Taylor's Uberti-made 44-40 Remington '63 conversions. Two of the best finished/fitted revolvers I own, bar none. Been having a ball testing loads with them; BP as smokeless.
After my experience with Colt Open Top C&B 'wedgies', the idea of cartridge versions just didn't appeal. My trio of Uberti .44 Remington C&Bs has been nothing but joy.

Anything but Ruger. Why, because they only outwardly resemble a cowboy gun. I like the feel of a half-cock notch. The Ruger is a strong and well made gun. I had one of the original Vaqueros but it never felt like a single action. I like Colt SAA and clones and also Colt and Rem cap and ball pistols.

I hear you and agree with you mrappe. That's why I like my schofields. The only colt clone I have is one modeled after the original style. Firing pin on the hammer and all that. It feels good in the hand.

I have two Rugers. An old Single Six in .357 and a Ruger redhawk .44 mag with a 5 inch barrel. Love them both, but the vaqueros just don't scratch my itch of authenticity.

I also shoot full-power black powder loads.  When I shot smokeyless, they were also always full-power.  My non Ruger guns have held up just fine after tens of thousands of rounds.  Needless to say, my Rugers have held up fine as well.  After 13 years of shooting my AWA Longhorn (45 Colt) I broke a spring a couple weeks ago (during maintenance, not at a shoot).  I consider that normal wear & tear, not a failure.

Matter of fact, the ONLY catastrophic failure I've ever had (of a cartridge gun) was while I was in the Army, when a firing pin broke in my Remington-Rand 1911A1 during a pre-combat inspection, while performing the Manual-At-Arms for my Commander!  Luckily, he knew how much of a stickler for maintenance I was (which was why he made me his Armorer and go-to guy for small  arms - before I went to Master Gunner school) and we both got a laugh out of it.  I'd still love to know how many times that firing pin had been hit by the hammer before it broke, since the last of the Remington-Rand pistols were made during WWII.

Just a note ... when I say full-power, I don't mean OVER spec loads like some think "warthog" means.  Having shot with C.O. Jones, I know that is also what he means.

Same here Steel Horse. No sissy loads in my guns. All of them are in .45 Colt and they are all factory full house loads. I do load my own but I use the full loads in them as well. If it ain't a kicking it ain't worth a lickin. LOL

I know Rugers will hold up to just about any load, but so far all the others in my collection have done the same. I don't baby any of my guns. They all get shot and shot a lot.

I have been shooting Uberti guns for about 30 uears now. Started with a 51 Navy and must have owned 20 different ones since then. For the most part they have been good to me. I have 2 Uberti SAA clones in .45 as I too will not own a handgun unless the first digit is a 4. And I shoot real loads. If I want to shoot a BB gun, I'll go out and buy one. I'm still waiting for a brace of 7 inch Schofields to arrive. Dying to get them also have a 5 inch Schofield and once you get used to them, you fall in love with them.

As much as I like shooting the rugers, a good buddy loans me his now and then (but they're in that girly caliber, you know the one under .40), I will have to say Uberti.

Just doing a laugh about full power loads. A guy in our club let me shoot his pistols yesterday to try them out cause he's looking at selling them, I asked him if he wanted me to shoot his loads or use mine and he told me to use my own. I don't think he realised I always load full power, he doesn't get out there much when we shoot which is why he's selling, and the look of horror on his face when I touched the first one off was priceless.
He always loads light.
After that we agreed to use mine in the rifles and his in the pistols.

Some time in 94 of 5 went to a gun show in El Paso.  I guy was selling a 10 inch Super Blackhawk 44Mag for $250 with an uncle mikes shoulder holster for $250.  Had no use for a 44 mag, but the price was right.  I was hooked.  Next purchase was a Bisley BH, followed by a Vaquero 44 mag that I bought to start shooting Cowboy action.  Back then you only needed 1 pistol.  Picked up a rossi 92 and a baikal shotgun.  Basically Rugers are built like a tank and Ruger stands behind the product.  The on negative with the older Vaquero is the cylinder does not index for unloading.  The new vaqueros do.  They are also quite a bit lighter.

Rugers are the timex of CAS

Cpt. Dan, I started with Ruger Old Vaqs, also in 44 M and if you didn't know, you can get the parts and make any old Vaquero index right with a Free-Spin Pawl set-up.  I suspect that Ruger purchased the rights to this design and then changed it ever-so-slightly, so now they call it their "patented" update to their guns.  It cost me $32 to do each of 3 Vaqueros I have had over the years.  I still have one ...

But NOW I have a NEW favourite toy for shooting CAS with BP ammo!  I recently bought a very new production Uberti model of the Colt 1871/1872 Open Top; Late Model (long grip like on the 1860 Army), chambered in 44 Special!  To keep thing as historically in line as possible, I have loaded and shot 44 Russian BP rounds 'thru it, and thanks to a couple great pards who hang out around here, Litl Rooster and Johnny McCrae, I now have a small quantity of 44 Colt cases that I'll be loading up and trying!

The 44 Russian cases I loaded up with 3F Goex as well as some with Pyrodex P, and use that charge to push a 200 gr. MAV Dutchman BigLube (tm) boolit.  I'll use the same boolit, but with more BP allowed by the longer (new model) 44 Colt brass.

Yee Haw!!

Longer brass = more room for BP
More BP = more smoke and fire

More smoke & fire = MORE fun for me!!!  (I'm an UN-repentant Warthog who doesn't like light poof-tink loads.  But ... warthog does NOT mean over-charged loads; it simply means using the highest power/heaviest safe published loads.)

I can't just pick one.I love my Ruger New Vaqueros and my Uberti Smoke Wagons. They all shoot good and they all feel good in the hand.None have bad points.Ruger puts out a very good product from rifles right down to the single actions.

I like my Smoke Wagons by Taylor's in .44-40 w/4 3/4" barrels. They are slick and smooth outta the box and have run without a hitch fer 3 years now using nothing but full loads with BP. Other than having the cylinder to barrel headspace brought out to .008 I have done nothing else to these guns.
I like the checkered wood grips, the slightly lower hammer, the wider ramp on the top frame and a thicker front sight. They're a joy to shoot.

Yeeee-Hawwwwww!

Good on ya, pard!  Are you gonna load BP in brass shotshells?  I've had a ball with mine and have developed a simple way of reloading them.  But it is time-consuming.  (It's all done by hand, except for the re-capping operation, and that COULD be done by other hand techniques.)

My Tula shoot-gun is not my favorite CAS pistol, (or a pistol at all) but I do shoot it one-handed somoetimes at CAS matches!

Describe your favorite pistol.. why do you like it so..
If you're an other, then tell us all what it is..

I'm trying something, you get 2 votes.. we'll see how it works.

After trying Remington 1858's and 1875's as well as Schofields and New Model Russians I went back to the Colt Style Clones.  My favorite revolvers are my 7.5 inch barreled SAA's.  One is an old EMF Dakota with an 1860 Army Grip frame mounted on them and a set of Tru-Ivory grips.  My second is a Great Western 2 outfitted as the Dakota.  Those 1860 grips fit my hand like a glove and are the best shooting of any of the previously mentioned firearms.  Don't get me wrong, I am not bad mouthing the others, it is just that they did not trip my trigger like these SAA clones do.

Howdy!

Although I have medium to small hands for a man, I have found that the 1860 Army grip on my old Iver Johnson marked C&B gun has the most comfortable grip that is on most of my guns.  (I say most because I have a Hogue grip on my Python - named "Monty," oddly enough  ;)  that is the MOST comfortable grip of all the handguns I own, but since it's NOT of the Olde West era, my 1860 gets the nod.)   I have an 1871/2 Open Top I got 'thru Cimarron that has the1860 Army grip as well.  BOTH guns are made by Uberti, but the C&B gun fits my hand better.  The wood is thicker on the O/T and I have sanded it down some, but I'm not very confident and don't want to ruin the already excellent wood-to-metal fit that it came with.  I WISH I could get it even closer and also thin it some, but I don't have a lot of confidence in myself when working with wood.  I guess I'm not patient enough, because I have taken too much material off before, and as you know, once it's gone you can't get it back.  Oh, well.  It fits fine, I just know that it can be perfect (if I knew what to do) because it is just right for most folks and would be VERY close to a perfect fit in the right hands.

Like you, Grapeshot, I prefer the Colt fit (especially the Army grip) but I DO like the Remington fit almost as well.  I had a pair (now just one) of 1875 Remington Army models (the ones that Uberti stupidly markets as the "Outlaw") as well as an 1858 NMA Remington Cap & Ball.  The NMA grip shape and feel (mine is a Pietta) is so-so, but the 1875s came with some hand-made thick grips that had a laser-carved tombstone and different initials on the outside panels of both grips.  One was marked RIP, the other LIP.  If you wore them in a double holster rig, each "engraving" faced outside.  I thought of each as meaning "Rest In Peace" and "Live In Peace."  It was pretty cool when I first got the guns, but I didn't care for the thickness of the grips, plus the laser engraving looked too modern.  (I know, it's just me!  Some years later I sold one of the 1875s and put both of the laser-inscribed panels on it.  Then, my bud Jed Cooper gave me a very nice set of old Uberti factory grip panels he had from a gun he no longer owned.  Surprisingly, they fit very well.  I say surprisingly because Larry "GripMaker" sent me (OK, I bought them) some VERY nice stags that I really wanted on my Remington.  But alas, the frame is shaped oddly, and not like the newer models, so they will NOT fit.

(Anybody want to buy a "never-been-worked-on" set/kit of stag grip panels for an 1875 Remington?)

If this is the worst thing that happens to me this week, I guess I'm in pretty good shape, eh?!

 ;D

I do love those long 1860 grips!!

That's great, Fowler.  A lot of folks have been biding their time to see whether the new M&H revolvers will actually be made.  It sounds like they have finally gotten their act together!

first handgun i owned was a old 3 screw ruger blackhawk in 357[ bought back in 1975 or76].  have owned about 7 or 8 ruger sa since then  along with with a bunch of other single actions  in 22lr and mag ,357,41mag,44 spc and mag 45lc 454casull  had a old german made nickle plated with ivory grips  44-40 but back in the 70's ammo was almost imposable to find and sold that one for that reason  still have a 71/2"41 blackhawk thats been 1 of the most accurate handguns i've owned.for cas  i like my uberti hombres they just fit my hands a little better . i shot another shooters 2nd gen colt ssa in 357 that was tuned and engraved that was the nicest shooting sa i've shot going have to save some coin to get a pair of old colts to be happy now   the 1873 colts and it's clones are the classic cowboy guns that i grewup watching on tv as a kid and are what i like to shoot in cas

Another vote for Ruger.  I've got a stainless Bisley .357 new Vaquero.  It's the only single action I've got right now.

I had a Taurus Gaucho with case hardened frame in .45 Long Colt, but the ejector rod was plastic, and the grips were ugly black plastic, too.  I know now that I could have traded the grips, but at the time I just couldn't find any information on what grips would fit it, as the Gaucho was (is?) out of production.

I traded it in for the Ruger, and have never looked back.  I'm very new to the sport, so there may be something I set my hand on that I fall in love with at some point, but it hasn't happened yet.

I went through a few guns before I found two I REALLY like, and they DON'T MATCH...both are Uberti's from Cimarron, my left side pistol is an 1872 Army Open Top with 7.5" barrel. I have several cut & repaired tendons in my right hand dating from the 1980's...it's not as strong or flexible as the left hand. On the right side I use a Model P Jr. The smaller size works well with my right hand infirmity. Both are .38 Special. Sure glad I'm lefthanded ::)

Ruger "Old Style" Vaqueros in .44 & .357 Magnum, all with 4.62" barrels. They are very durable and reliable. One of my .44's had 20,000 rds through it before a part (transfer bar) broke. You get your moneys worth out of them.

The girly guns (SASS Vaqueros) belong to the wife!

Ruger certainly IS "durable."   They're Hell-for-stout.  And you'll be able to pass 'em on to your kids for sure.  And they'll pass 'em on to their kids.  And those "kids" will ... you know.  Ruger is, in the world of guns, a synonym for "strong."

Taylor Uberti Cattleman in .357 4  3/4. Found the standard wood grip too slippery so I changed out with a black gunfighter style grip. Works for me.

I like the Ruger Bisely Vaqueros the most because of the heft and laid back hammer.  I also like the fact that they fill up my hand more than a Colt replica.  That being said I also have a set of Colt replicas for when I feel the itch to shoot something different.

Definitely Curer Vaqueros. I started with a pair of birdsheads in 45LC SS 5 1/2, then switched to a pair of blued 7s.
I now own a pair in each of the following calibers. 45 LC,  38/357, 44-40, and 32H&R. All are SS. Darn cowboy game is like a disease. Actually I'm a gonna view this group as a support group. I need help. ::)

I'm shooting .357  Uberitis with 3.5 barrels but am migrating to Rugers. I like the shorter barrels as they clear the holster faster and with the short distances to the targets, I don't see a need for longer barrels. Downside is the short ejector rod sometimes doesn't kick the spent shell out.

My pair of Uberti Remington 1875's in 44-40 are my favorites. The Remington fit my big hands better and I've not had a lick of trouble with them in over 10 years shooting them. Also just got a pair of Remington 1890's in 45 Colt so this may cause a rift between the two models. ( I keep them separated in the safe!)
