Homemade Wonder Wads
« on: November 25, 2020, 08:40:32 AM »
Gentlemen, For those of you who make your own felt lubricated wads for cap and ball pistols, do you prefer lubing the wad material before you cut them, or lube them after they're cut?

Also, I bought the felt material years ago, and can't remember where I got it.  What are your sources for that?

Lube then punch for me. I use craft store felt that is rather limp but once the bees wax and Crisco lube hardens they punch out nicely with a home made punch.

If you punch them out first, do you just dip them in the lube?

I have a shallow tray , I melt the lube that just covers the surface then  drop the wads in the wads absorb the lube
its easy to pop them off with plastic putty knife ...

 :)  A HAPPY THANKSGIVING ALL   ;)

Don't forget that all important POWER NAP today.  Now.  I must report I have simplified the process for Wonder Wad type lube pills for my Percussion Guns.  I DON'T USE WADS.  Nope.  None at all.  No Bear Grease, No Goose Grease,  No Chrisco, No Beez Wax, Nada.  None.  ZERO, ZIP.  HOW??? You may ask.

Simple says I.  I shoot APP as my propellant of choice.  Requires NO LUBE whatsoever.  None.  Nada.  Zip.  Zero.  You can use lube but it makes no difference.  APP makes it's own lube.  Wondermus!!

Admittedly, this missive provides no useful information for the OP.  The OP obviously isn't using APP and needs the hassle of messy, sticky, gooey . . . . stuff.  Nah.  No need.  Now, also admittedly, as this missive provides no applicable nuggets of wisdom for the OP, it certainly may be ignored.  Should you elect to continue your ignorance, I shan't be insulted.  No, not one whit.  However if your reading this part, it's too late for ya.  Turning to run will do ya no good.  Yer here.  Nanny Nanny Poo Poo!!

Greetings My Good Netizens-

regarding sources of felt ....
Since Real BP and petrochemnicals do not get along so very well, I always felt (pun intended)
that one ought to avoid synthetic felt.

However, I do not having any scientifical basis nor even casual anectdotal evidence.... just my feeling.

However since thick cardboard, ocassionally  soaked in wax, works pretty well, i have stuck with that
(except for one bag of store bought felt wads)

I figured out it's Duro Felt.  How does the cardboard work?

I punch wads from pulp egg carton, or similar pulp containers, then soak them in BP compatible lube. I pick each one out of the lube with a tweezer and lay them on a plastic bag to harden. I use them atop the powder in percussion revolvers and in pistol/carbine loads over BP.

I wouldn't have thought they'd carry enough lube to do everything they're supposed to.  You use the same diameter you'd use for felt wads?

They seem to work well, even in the 20" Uberti '66 in .38Spl. of course the bullets, RCBS.38 Cowby mould 145 gr. are lubed with SPG as well.

I have used the fiber Egg carton wads as well, they work great. Goodwill has old Felt Hats for cheap, I buy them when they are available.

Most likely a better seal with Felt. For me it is a toss-up
