ASM 1860 Conversions
« on: December 22, 2019, 07:26:25 AM »
Did all ASM 1860 Conversions have a cylinder split gas ring on the arbor between the cylinder and the barrel? I have a few of these Conversions but I have one of the early ones serial #93X  without the gas ring and it locks up tight and functions, and fires just as well as the others.
Thanks again,
Reno

No.  The Gas Ring with the cut out for the Barrel Breach was a much later addition to ASM production.  It is actually more common to find the guns without the gas ring and without the recess in the cylinder face for the ring.

The gas ring actually serves to establish reliable End Shake and Head Space.  It would however, tend to lock the gun up with the Wedge tapped home.  Most of those guns had the same "short Arbor" problems as Uberti.

Thanks again, Coffinmaker. When I bought the gun it had never been fired, and knew the risk of the ASMs as I have had a few but the price was to good to turn down and thought at least I would have a few parts as I know parts for them are no more. The wedge fits tight and when cocked the cylinder locks up tight with no movement.
Thanks again, Coffinmaker,

Reno

Coffinmaker, how could I make a gas ring, out of small metal tubing filed to correct length for the head space?
Thanks
