Has Anyone else noticed....
« on: May 22, 2021, 09:44:20 AM »
My 5.5" 1872 Open Top is .45 Schofield and my 7.5" 1872 is .45 Colt.  The cylinders are exactly the same length and I was able to swap barrels and cylinders back and forth between the two.  I am thinking of taking a .45 Colt chamber reamer and bump the shoulder forward in the Schofield cylinder.

Any thoughts?

Its no big deal, as I generally only load Schofields, even though three of my four .45 CAS revolvers (Colt 1873, Kirst 1860, and 1872 7.5") have .45 Colt cylinders.  It would be nice, though, to be able to use the Colts in all four of my revolvers.

No problem.  I have seen guns labeled as .45 Schofield actually chamber in .45 Colt.  The shorter round actually makes the gun harder to sell as very few people shoot the Schofield.  So it makes sense to make them interchangable.

Thanks!  I can rent a reamer for $37.  I think I'll do it after I get back from RR Flat.

 :)  Hey T. Lawman  ;)

Just a quick FYI.  The Uberti Open Top is the most versatile Single Action current available for CAS Play.

The Open Top is chambered for 38Spl, 44 colt/Russian, 44 Special, 45 Schofield and 45 Colt.  ALL of those cartridges may be added to a single frame with just a little fitting.

HOWEVER:  To do so, it is imperative to follow Pettifoggers tutorial for correcting the Barrel to Arbor fit.  The correction needs made to the Arbor and once done, adding the other calibers is just a matter of sourcing the Cylinders and Barrels.  The bore for the Arbor in the Barrel Lug will need de-burring in ALL the additional barrels.

Play Safe Out There.

PS:  I have never been a fan of the 45 Colt to be chambered in the Open Top but that is for another thread.

 :)  Hey Deacon  ;)

I have bad news.  If your talking about cartridge swap for a Uberti Richards/Mason conversion . . . . and the base gun is .44 or .45, a 38 cylinder/Barrel combo won't fit.

VTI had two of the .45 Colt cylinders for the open top in stock for $130 each.  Pulled the pin and ordered one.  By the time I paid shipping both ways to rent the die and gauges, it would have been about $80.  Its a snap to fit the new cylinder....

Got the cylinder today.  Miked it against the .45 Schofield cylinder.  Everything is virtually identical.  Popped it in and timing was perfect!  Should be good to go.

ANYONE want to buy the Schofield cylinder for a  really good price???
