45 LC load meeting power factor
« on: January 04, 2012, 06:27:49 PM »
Howdy guys. I don't stray down here too often from the Leather Forum, but I recently started reloading. I'm wondering if anyone had a 45 LC load worked up that will meet/exceed the 150 power factor for the following set up:

250 LRNFP bullet using Trail Boss out of a Marlin with a 20 inch barrell.

I appreciate the help. JD

How do you figure "Power Factor"?

Doesn't SASS Manuel state minimum velocity at 650fps and Max out of the rifle at 1400fps?  I'm thinking that either velocity make major with a 250 grain .45 cal bullet running at any velocity inbetween.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.

SASS Minimum as in CAS has nothing to do with it.  Wild Bunch has a 150 minimum power factor.

Bullet weight x velocity=power factor.

Example:  230 grain bullet X 725 fps = 166.750 or 166.7PF

Check of loading data for TB and it should get you in the ballpark.  Verify with a chronograph. ;)

It must be understood,  SASS and Wild Bunch are two SEPARATE games.  Requirements are very different.

PS:  Almost any base load with a 200Gr or heavier will make minimum PF.

A 250gr bullet only needs to be going 600 fps to meet the power factor, so it should be pretty easy to exceed that.  The Hodgdon load data for that bullet with Trailboss ranges from 606 fps to 727 fps, and I'd think that would be higher out of a 20" barrel, so even their minimum would probably be okay.
