Title: Colt open top
Post by: snubnose57 on July 21, 2018, 06:34:50 PM
Recently picked up one in .38 special.
My question is, were all the originals in .44 Henry, or were any made in .38 rimfire?

Some of the Navy conversions were 36 Rimfire, but I've not heard of a '71/72 Opentop in that caliber.  Maybe somebody will come along that knows for sure.

Colt only manufactured the 71/72 Open Top in their (Colts) proprietary copy of the 44 Henry Flat cartridge and it was actually intended to be a same caliber partner to the 1866 and the Henry.

This is not to say Colt absolutely did not also build a few "One Offs" as prototypes.  Nothing other than the above ever went into production.

Congrats on a sweet pistola.  I have a 7" Army .45 and 5.5" Navy grip in .38.  They are really fun to shoot and  I think the open top is one of the nicest "natural pointers" out there. ;D
