Title: Remington 38-55 rolling block
Post by: Logangrimnar on June 20, 2022, 09:57:55 AM
Hello,
I purchased a remington rolling block from a lgs that is selling an estate. It is marked remington number 1 military conversion on the tag. The gunsmith says its 38-55 but the barrel has no markings at all. The only stamping on the entire rifle is covered by the rear sight. The barrel is round, heavy, and black. It has unertl style basses installed. The wood certainly looks upgraded. Has anyone seen anything like this? Did numrich sell round 38-55 replacement barrels? Any information at all would help. I will obviously validate caliber before shooting. The hole certainly is smaller than 45 and bigger than 22.

I have seen rifles like yours in the past, they are all gunsmith or hobbyist conversions.  Converting those old RB's to 38-55 was quite popular in the 60's-90's.  I remember one that looked a lot like yours that was built by a fellow named Harris in Terrell, Texas.

From the leading edge of the action back that looks very much like the Pedersoli (sp?) target Rolling Block being sold these days. The barrel and fore end look to be custom re-barreling and a custom fore end. You very seldom see that attention to detail on the hammer, the block's thumb tab, and on the trigger guard, on military conversions.

My $.02 worth. YMMV

It definitely looks newer than any conversion I've ever seen. Once I get it home I'll remove the sight and see what it says.

The only way that I know to verify the caliber would be to make a chamber casting using cerrosafe from Brownells. Then measure the dimensions of the casting and compare to different cartridge dimensions.

A very nice looking rifle.

The shop took it back and refunded my money. They then sold it as a 357 herret. Very possibly what it is but why anyone would chamber that rifle in that Caliber is anyone's guess
