River Junction Cavalry Hat
« on: January 27, 2012, 07:02:46 AM »
Hello!

Does anyone know what the quality of the River Junction Trade Co. Cavalry Hat is like?  It looks pretty good in the picture, but you never know until you see one.  Thanks!

Hi

I have a few hats now, and I STRONGLY suggest that you buy a fur felt hat, not the wool one.  Fur Fetl handles the rain better, wool shrinks.  I haven't purchased from River Junction, but I do know that they sell hats in both Wool felt and Fur (Rabbit) felt.  The fur is double in price, but the fur will also be wearable after a 3 inch rain.

I have one of thier hats. The quality of the wool is fine and it is shaped OK but does not have authentic detials like the edge stitching or fold or the vent.

Correction. The one I am describing is from Coon Creek not River Junction. I was confused about which hat came from where.

When did you get yours?  According to the description, they are supposed to have the side vents and edge stitching now.

Is yours the black or drab version?  I need the drab version for my Marine impressions.

Others on here would know better than I, but the original hats I've seen are all over the map as far as color.  I would guess this is a combination of differences in color as issued as well as different amounts of fading.  I doubt too many people were concerned with it at the time, as they were "field" hats.  It's been pretty well established that uniformity in the field was more theoretical than actual.  Thanks for the input gentlemen!

For my drab hat I have placed an order with Eureka Arsenal for a model 1883 drab hat. I will post pictures when I get it.

I will report on the River Junction hat when it arrives.  They had a twenty percent off anything in the store sale and I couldn't resist.  I'd rather spend the extra money on powder or gas checks or something!  I hope it's nice!

I made up my 76 black hat, with a river junckion hat, the union  slouch hat, had to get the right ribbon and vents from else where ,which wasnt a problem ! and it was looking good.

I made an error when talking about my hat. I bought two hats this summer. One black slouch hat one from Coon Creek Old West and a tan John Ford Cavalry Hat from River Junction. I had confused the two. Jim from River Junction kindly pointed out my possible error to me in an email and I checked when I got home and I have switched them in my mind.

I apologize to all and sundry--especially to the fine folks at River Junction.

It was my Coon Creek hat that does not have authentic details like the edge stitching or fold or the vent.

My River Junction John Ford Cavalry Hat was exactly as described. It is well made and worth the price. I have since trimmed the brim and reshaped it to a different form but what came to me was exactly what was advertised. The folks at River Junction were extremely personable and easy to deal with. I have made a few purchases from them this year and I will buy from them again.
