I'm trying to rent a car for a trip to Utah in about a week.  No one will rent a car in California and allow it in any other state except Nevada and Arizona.

I don't want to try to take my clapped out old wreck that far.

Why are Hertz, Enterprize, and the rest making this policy?

I don't know why not, but it's that way all over; we rented a car in Minnesota, and were prohibited from taking it to Iowa, but could take it to Chicago. ??  Maybe it is just their way of asserting their authority; or just twisting our tails for the ducks of it.

Here's an idea:  Rent one to come to Las Vegas, one way, then rent another one here, to take to Utah.  Think that would work??  Or, just give in, and fly.

A possible alternative:

Arrange to have the old clunker put in the shop while you are gone. Surely it needs an oil change or something. Then call the rental car place and say you need a car for a week, with unlimited mileage, while your car is in the shop. If they ask where you'll be going, say "around." Then, unless they specifically mention you're not being allowed to drive to Utah, drive whereever you want to drive. But don't you mention Utah, make them bring it up.

    I knew you was gonna say that, but I jus' had to needle ya', anyhow.    You know, I definitely feel the same way, after that trip to the land of MannySodas last September.  Onliest reason I'd even consider it anymore would be in case of a dire emergency, and even then, it'd take some serious considerin'.

A couple of years ago i had to make a connecting fly in Minn/StPaul, and was the worst experience in my life, we got dropped at term B1 and connection was at F67 (or something like that) the people were rude, and after we got on the plane, we sat on the runway for 2 1/2 hours waiting to take off. (we were #37 in the line and only one runway)
When I got home, I read a book by Charles Karult, and he described the same situation same airport only 20years earlier.

So I am flying to Boston this month and we are going thru Dallas/Ft Worth...

After his trip to "Wendover" Utah, Forty Rod returns the rental car forgetting his helmet and the timer slip that says 112.95 mph average speed.

Spent some time at Wendover when I lived there, but used to spend a LOT of time at the old Salt Lake Raceway.  Learned to pilot sports cars around there and watched some really great drivers get their starts on the salt track. 

Drove my first and only Formula Vee rig there in about 1961-62.  Came in third behind some hotshot dentist whose name I can't remember, and a Utah highway cop named Marvin Dennison.  Five cars finished behind me, two others didn't finish at all. 

Watched Ak Miller run a Devin-Olds Pikes Peak car for six laps after the oil pan dumped itself dry and he still came in second with a totally cooked mill.   A friend of mine bought the car for something like $400, rebuilt the engine and trans, stuck some odds and ends on it and raced for another five years.  Never won anything, but he was driving a Miller car.

Lots of MGs, Jags, TR3 and 3A, Lotus Seven flying shingles, and the like.  I bought a  Vanwall GP car that someone had rebodied into the world's ugliest roadster, but it ran like a champ.  Lots of Sprites and AH 100s and early 3000s.  Toward the end there seemed to be a larger number of Mustangs, 'Vettes, a few Alpines and a Tiger or two, and some Porsches.

Every now and again someone would spring a Ferrari or birrdcage Maser on us, and once a Lister-Jag.

Now see what you went an' did...Got me all nostalgic.

Dang old Crown Vic doesn't seem like much any more.
