I will be hosting the 2020 Grand Muster, June 26, 27 & 28 at my farm.
This Muster will be open to anyone in the GAF. If not currently a member I can help you register. (Membership in the GAF is free and easy) By using Google Earth and going to 41°40'16.24"N Latitude and 99°19'42.54"W Longitude you can see the Grand Muster site. Registration forms are available below and on the dispatches page of the Grand Army's Web site. Participation will be limited to 45 shooters. Registration is $80 before May 15; $85 after May 15. Extra banquet meals are $17.50 (for non-shooting wives, girlfriends, and children, ect.). Meals will be available on site from Delmonico. Those wishing to attend but not compete may do so without registration fee, but be sure to pay the meal fee if you plan to eat with us.
The planned activities include: a 3 stage GAF steel target main match, a Long Range Rifle match, a Precision Pistol match and a GAF Expansion Era Match. While 3 stages for the main match doesn't sound like much, these three stages will be of the skirmish format and will feature about 20 knock down targets per stage.Round counts will be dependent on the number of times the shooter needs to shoot at each target to get it to fall. 100 rounds at least would be a good plan. This is a match that participants say truly needs to be experienced to be fully appreciated and another described as "The finest Victorian military firearms shooting match in the world."
Shooters will be able to sight in their rifles on Thursday and Friday afternoon and evening. Sighting in your rifles for the distances used is STRONGLY encouraged.
Long Range Rifle will be 100-300yds. on armor so full power jacketed bullets are fine for it.
We will have a tent city and I have tentage for about 10 individuals if you don't have your own contact me, I can help. We should have plenty of time to sit around the campfire and visit.
The average high temperature in this area on June 30th is around 87 degrees
I've attached a FAQ sheet and a suggested equipment list.
We expect to run 3 or 4 Squads shooting concurrently. Each squad will cycle through each of the 3 main match stages, the long range match and the sidearm match on Saturday. The Long Range Match and the Precision Pistol Match will each be treated as a stage. We will run ahead of schedule if possible. We should be finished shooting the match by Saturday evening with awards presentation Saturday evening at the banquet if possible; however, if we run behind we will finish up Sunday morning. That also leaves Sunday available for happy fire and use of the Howitzer and Gattling if it returns.
If you have a UTV/ATV that you would like to bring, you are welcome use it between stages.
The banquet will be at the Comstock Premier Lodge ( http://www.comstocklodge.com/ ) and the price of the banquet is included in your registration. If you are bringing a spouse or child who isn't a registered shooter the cost of an extra ticket for them is $17.50 Lodging is available at the lodge as well. If you are considering staying at the Comstock Lodge, don't wait too long to make reservations. I know at least one room was booked Saturday night for next year's muster. I've also reserved a block of rooms at the Wildlife Inn at nearby Taylor as well (308-942-6234) early registration is also suggested. We bought out both facilities in full in 2018.
The Grand Muster falls on the same weekend as the local city fair and the High School Alumni reunions so all area motels WILL sell out. If planning to stay in a motel MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS EARLY!

Noted a couple mistakes, mistakes corrected. Posted 2020 Muster Registration, then noticed it was on the original post. If I could delete this post, I would, it serves no purpose at this time.

Also, it says 2019 in the body of the text, instead of 2020.
-
Yes, I copied and pasted this year's info, then edited it. When I added the attachments one of them was too big so it didn't save my edits. It should be corrected now.

3 Registered shooters for next year already.

What is the theme of this years Grand Muster?

120th of the Boxer Rebellion.

Hope to attend, final decision will be COVID 19 dependent.

I expect to make a statement concerning the Chinese Virus in the next day or so
-
Isn't "Chinese Virus" racist Sir? NO, it came from CHI NA !
-
Seems Scotty needs some insensitivity training.
It originated in China, it's Chinese. ;D ;)
-
I'm planning on not attending the muster this year. Of course that is the norm since I can never make my schedule work. :(
I have sometimes gone shooting appropriate guns and gear during the muster at my home range. I will do the same this year but I am endeavoring to have an appropriate uniform for this muster. I will have to do some creative thinking to make my own stages. I'm lucky to have an "action range" at my club. I can do shooting and moving, poppers etc on that range as long as I am the only one there.
-
blue shirt \khaki pants and a hat and the obligatory suspenders works great for a SAW Late IW

Please reread my post Del, that was EXACTLY my point!
-
Sounded like someone had been to too much sensitivity training, never had to myself, I think they were afraid of what would happen. ::)
-
If somebody doesn't like "China Virus" Then how about "Kung Flu". Or Maybe "Wu-Flu". Perhaps my insensitivity training needs updating, too.

Jeez, that's new, I thought the "Brown Bottle" or "Beer" flu was treated with Asprin and lots of water. I.E. a hangover. Learnin' every day.

Joke about it as much as you like. Today reality hit, found out today, was exposed to Covid last week, today temp up 3 degrees, pulse ox down 4 points to 94, employee health says come to work tomorrow. Talked with my supervisors, they say no. I agree with them. Will review tomorrow, if I report to work, I will be wearing a mask @ gloves. At this time, I am between a rock & a hard place, so show up to the screening in the AM, & tell them I shouldn?t be here, but employee health said I should.

Use your judgement, Brian.
If exhibiting symptoms, isolate. You have a good case for justifying it.
Keeping yourself and others safe is most important.
Keep us informed.
RCJ

And Brian, please keep us informed, as much as possible, how you're doing if you do come down with it.
-
Will see how this plays out. Want to come but if travel restrictions in effect or if we are still supposed to stay at home I will. Sadly my son in Grand Junction is working on the China Virus ward so we really should not visit him enroute
-
Take care of yourself, Brian!
-
Largely a faulty thermometer, next AM, went to work, had a departmental nurse check my temperature, normal. Was able to purchase a new thermometer, temperature normal/stable. 12th day past potential exposure, but must remain cautious, my county largest number of Covid positives in state.

Beer flu for the culturally sensitive.
That is more properly Mexican Beer Flu. Once must be specific as we would hate to see bud or coors sales drop off based on inaccurate information

My registration hits the mail on Monday, 5/18.

Most know I had heart by-pass in December, been talking since before it with my Drs on what I can do this summer, had the go to resume my duties this summer provided I would get someone to help me load and unload the gear, they were worried about me carrying the ovens up the basement stairs, had that covered.
A couple weeks ago I started to have trouble with a cough and congestion, no other signs of COVID-19, I let it go for a week but no improvement so last Monday I called the Dr for an appointment, they made me do a Covid-19 test which made sense to me. Went to the drive thru place and got the q tip shoved in my nose clrear to my arse-hole as required, the test came back negative so I got to go see the Dr today. I have a sinus infection and they did a chest x-ray, bad news, I have some pneumonia also, got sent home with antibiotics and steroids.
She would not tell me not to do it, but her advice was to not do the muster this year, partly due to the pneumonia and partly due to the fact that my cardio rehab has been put on hold because of this mess, I am supposed to be done by June 1st and have not completed a fourth of it. As much as I want to go, I am going to listen to the Dr this time and not come up, a very hard decision.

Del, thank you for letting everyone know.
Everyone else, I am working on some ideas as to how to handle the meals. If I come up with a solution I'll let everyone know (again by June 1) If not I will refund the meal fees as soon as I can after June 1

BTW I keep forgetting to post this:
John Irons asked me to pass on that he and River City John, and Wooly Dan have reserved the bunk house room at the Comstock Lodge and they have room for one more person to share the room with.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Grand Army of the Frontier;
I am pleased to be able to announce that as of Friday we have been approved by the state and local health Departments to proceed with the Grand Muster with some caveats.
1.) Delmonico will not be able to attend to our cooking needs. At this time, I have not secured a backup source for on-site meals. Since I currently haven’t got anything lined up, don’t send meal ticket money with your registration. If I am able to come up with a plan for on-site meals, you can pay as you use the option. If you have already sent payment, I will refund at the Muster.
2.) When I laid out my plans to the local health department the lady I spoke with said they all sounded good except for the banquet. We can’t use the Comstock lodge’s facility as we over fill it and can’t maintain the social distancing requirements. So I suggested holding it on the campsite as we have plenty of tables and could spread it out over about 200 acres if need be. (The last part was added with a chuckle because, after all it would give us plenty of “social distance”) Her response made absolutely no sense to me. She said that wouldn’t work, that we couldn’t have the banquet in a venue that isn’t rated for capacity. She said that we would have to find a venue with a rated capacity at least 4 times as large as the expected number of guests. The banquet is currently on hold and may not be held.
• So with that all said please plan to bring your own food and drinks.
• Apparently, SASS isn’t allowing match directors to bring a water cooler or an ice chest of bottled water. The GAF is more concerned about the heat and dehydration than I am about the chance that somebody might get the Wuhan from drinking our water. Water WILL be available
• Everyone (at all times) must try to keep the physical distance. No hugs or hand shaking. Use hand sanitizer often.
• Feel free to wear facemasks or bandanas as you see fit.
• There will be hand sanitizer at the water tables and in the out houses.
• Remember to maintain 6 feet distance between groups on the range and at lunchtime. Also, maintain 6 feet during registration
• OF COURSE, ANYONE WHO IS HAVING ANY SYMPTOMS OR WHO HAS BEEN EXPOSED TO ANYONE WITH THE VIRUS SHOULD STAY HOME! THINK OF OTHERS!
-
Thanks for the update, sir.

UPDATE
I've had a number of folks ask about the area restaurants; To the best of my knowledge, they are all open to at least carry out and Most if not all are open for limited seating dine in.
-
I received this message from Bat Masterson:
"I spoke to Emily with the Comstock Lodge yesterday and she said she would be doing her lunch delivery to the range again this year. When I explained about Del she even sounded open to making a limited number of lunches for non CL guests. She said she thought they were about $10 Ea. last year, packed in a small cooler you gave her and delivered to the range at noon.
I also found this link on the CL webpage about restaurants in the Sargent area. You could also follow the back links to contact them about lunches. She also said she has open rooms this year with all the cancelations.

Being a newbie, another question. Do we need to bring firewood/charcoal? I usually hesitate transporting firewood across state lines.

Not if Jerry has kept busy. ;D

Well, I haven't been THAT busy, but I should have enough by the time the muster rolls around

Emily also said that the Trotter (local stop and rob if you've never been there) has the best pizza in town as well as lots of fried goodies and sandwiches. I got a case of heartburn just listening to her talk about it.

Ice, go to the Corner Market for Ice, they have the six 5 pound bags aka bale for less than a 20# there or at Trotters. The best deal on Ice I've seen, easy to divide.

Just an update, I should not die soon, I seem to be over the pneumonia and my left lung is fully inflating again. I start back in Rehab Friday, have not been since I think March when it was cancelled due to the WW WU Flu or what ever they call it today. I was scheduled originally to being done before the muster and have completed less than 1/4th of it.
Going to be hard not seeing everyone this year, have hardly been out of the house since we got home in early January, not just because of this Wu Wu thing but the risk of a cold or regular flu, was wearing a mask in public before it was cool. I know that has been tossed around but my Drs tell me, no the masks won't stop the virus, but the virus doesn't travel along dry and by itself much, it travels on the snot/saliva that is coughed/sneezed out and a mask will stop most of that and lower the risk of a high risk person catching it. This is what they told me before I went home and this other virus was just a rumor. Even lowering the amount of virus coming in allows your immune system to have a better chance of destroying it. This follows pretty much anything I've been taught in science class.
-
Glad to hear that Glen!
I've been wondering how you were doing but have just got home from the daughter's house. She lives so far out in the boonies that there isn't signal. I'll give you a call in the next couple of days.
-
Ok, I found a venue for the Banquet and have it reserved. The Comstock Lodge personnel will serve the meal Saturday evening.
They are also willing to make individual lunches and bring them up to the hill. Anyone interested in this service should contact Emily Jandreau at (720) 431-1989 or emily.jandreau@icloud.com (ftp://emily.jandreau@icloud.com) by June 22 and pay the Lodge directly.
I will be returning any funds I have received for meals. If you haven't sent your registration please do not include any payment for meals other than any extra banquet tickets for camp followers.

Hi
Having more rifle trouble, actually glasses trouble, need new ones for the Rifles. Still having car issues, but may rent. Can you swap me between all pistol and Krag for both Victorian and Expansion on the day of battle so to speak? I have a few hundred rounds of Schofield and can generally hit stuff. The Krags are giving me issues. If I work out the issues, then I'll shoot Krags, if not Schofields only.

I can & want to attend! I have some reservations! I work in a major hospital, that has put me front line, by next Thursday, I have been at an entrance 25 times for134 hours. I have retired, but back dooring the institution as a volunteer! My department accepted my suggestion to keep me on board as an unpaid consultant. At this time, 18 shifts as transport, I love it!
Understand, 6/7, I served as Entrance Monitor at Covid clinic, since then at front entrances. If I attend, I will wear protective gear, & if you are afraid, keep your distance! If any of you object to me attending say now, for the safety of all, I will skip!

Due to some malfunctioning this weekend I will not be able to come up Saturday, it's not recommended I push it that much and besides I may be playing nurse to a sick wife who is in the hospital. I got to ride in the big red box truck early Saturday morning and she drove herself Saturday afternoon to the ER.
We both should be fine but hit a big bump in the road, my recovery has been set back to about where I was in late January minus the incision pain. Wife may require several nurse visits a week for a month or so.
I had a malfunction in one of my bypasses, they got it partly open and the old one is still there but reduced also. Good news is the heart is forming I think they called it laterals and if I understand it, it's growing small vessels on it's own and they are giving meds to help. Will find out more on Friday.
I did not have a heart attack but tried again, almost waited to long because I thought I was having acid reflux since everything showed fine with last echocardiogram.
I still have my sense of humor and was exchanging pictures with a friend in Minnesota who was hauled in on Friday.
-
Brian,
No worries.
I personally feel that social distancing at the GAF Muster will melt away fairly quickly. Once everyone gets down into those arroyos in the heat masks will certainly disappear. And I'm guessing it's going to be difficult to drink adult beverages through a mask.
One of the hardest adjustments for me during this pandemic is that I'm a hugger.
RCJ
-
Hi
I mainly hang out with people I work with, we've been out a lot walking, eating dinner etc. Social distancing at 6 feet really isn't as "unfriendly" as you might think. No fever this year, I have a mask or two, and will bring my bandit bandanna. We're all old and are used to shouting anyway.
Stay Healthy Del. Watch the blood thinners, those scare me as much as a heart attack.

Me too, but badly needed for the time, my Drs goal are to get me off them as soon as possible. I had another episode last night, not as bad as the one Saturday morning but we woke up the neighbors aganin and the EMT's and the ER people as well as the Cardio Dr assured me that calling 911 was the right thing to do. It was not a heart attack but unchecked could have went either way. It was not acid reflux and likely none of my acid reflux problems over the last couple have been acid reflux, taking that med and them going away right away was luck, not a fix.
they upped my meds, monitored me and sent me home early afternoon, there should be nitroglycerine waiting on my porch in the morning so I don't have to call 911. The long term plan is to get down to just the low dose aspirin but until then as things work themselves out the only options is the blood thinners or a redo and I'm not really wanting to do that again, will if I have to, but it would make me very grumpy. Being field dressed sucks.
The problem was confirmed the day after Thanksgiving and suspected the week before, I was going to save this picture to show up there but I'll show it now, this was Sept 14th in almost 90 degree heat at an event, my friends were worried when I sat down but I assured them that I was fine and only having acid reflux and some cold tea would help, it did or so I thought it did, so I went back to cooking, my Okie buddy was taking pictures and just happened to take it.
I showed it to a couple of the cardio Drs. and they are all of the opinion that I am not having an acid reflux problems, and this happened a couple times last year at the muster while you were shooting and like this day i sat out about 15 minutes and went back at it. My surgeon told me I'm a tough old Coot, not sure if that or damn dumb, don't matter I wished up. They are very sure I will be back up to snuff by next year, most likely by fall when I have my first event. i won't have it any other way, Rehab starts again Monday, I wanted to head up there on Monday or even Sunday but it ain't going to happen, as soon as I get the OK I'm going to try to build up to walking 2-3 miles a day, I was up to a mile and a half in March and then got hit by that mild pneumonia and had to stop and cardio rehab had to stop also due to the whatever it is.
-
Hey Del, you're doing pretty good. Just stick to plastic or wooden spoons for a while, no knives. I was on thinners for a month and doing leather work. Not necessarily my best idea....

Looks like I should be able to get away from work for the Muster. Got a new sub at for my route, finally got one I think might work out. Going to try and do what we did before, get a room at the Rodeo Inn, and commute to the shoot. Got no answer on their phone this evening, will try again in the morning.
-
Went to two appointments today, adjustment to the meds is working and I feel better, I may have had a mild heart attack last Saturday morning, if I did I pulled it off because after reviewing all the test results Heather says there is no damage from it if I did, likey the EMT's Nitro stopped it as it was actually happening because there was a flutter of some sort on the EKG in the ambulance that was gone by the time I got to the EG. Still looks very good for a full recovery, made one hard decision I was afraid I'd have to make, I will not be training one last bird dog due to I have decided I have no business out tramping by myself. A bit hard because he showed more raw potential than any of the others, no matter, got a good friend out of the deal. As my one friend says, he is a handsome Lad.
Did go to the basement today and saw that pile of iron, going to be hard because wanted to pack Sunday and be up on site monday. :-[
