I have one made the same way out oak dowels.

But, I like that one a whole lot better than mine... 8)

I used a 3/8" 4-6" dowels to seat caps. I like wood rather than metal or horn as it is a little less hard and to me, less likely to set off a cap if pushed hard. When I shot in a "True Grit" type match (required 4 pistols, 2 rifles & shotgun each stage with approx 450 rounds sent down range) my palm was pretty sore from seating caps. So I just drilled a hole into another hardwood of 1" dia, rounded the edges and glued the 3/8" into the 1" part. In essence, made a "short starter" like is used in muzzleloading rifles only much smaller.

As an additional benefit, Hellgate's "short Starter" is perfect for loading rifle cartridges into the side gate. Saves pinches and cuts, especially the last round into '92;s and Marlins that tend to have narrow, sharp edges.

My daughter found wooden 'beads' about two inches in diameter at Michael's Arts and Crafts.  Basically wooden balls. Think she paid less than a buck for two of 'em.  Bore a 1/2" hole about halfway thru it.

Lay a 1/2" dowel on the bench and roll it back and forth with the sander on it.  That narrows/tapers one end, just leave a blunt point on it.  Keep checking it against the unloaded pistol's nipples.  Once you have a good fit, cut it to about six inches.  A drop or two of glue and insert the tapered dowel into the ball.  Instant cap seater.  Fits the hand real nice............

Now I like that cap seater! I use a 3/8" X 6" Doll rod with a piece of round trimed leather glued on both ends.

I have for long time made size of nipples just right so that caps I use seat very snuggly from capper. Really only need some additional, light pressure to check seating. All sorts of tools work good for to check.

Well now, that looks like just the ticket for capping my Remmies!  Thanks.
