I use a very soft alloy, measures out at 9 Brinnell on my LBT tester. They are .840 total length. They are .360 from the crimp groove to the tip of the bullet. I can size them to .458 or .460.

Sam, how does this bullet perform for you at say 500+ yards and beyond?

I admire your............"optimism" for shooting your 1876 that far!!  ;D ;)  Seriously, the Big Lube bullets are great. I use them in pistol calibers and they are wonderful. However, the big lube groove is a detriment to aerodynamics at long range. As a side note from a man who shoots paper patched bullets in a Shiloh Sharps, the paper patched bullets are making a really strong "comeback" with traditional LR BP shooters as they are as aerodynamic as a modern jacketed spitzer bullet.  ;)

Har!  No kidding, I can't even see that far most days! :D  However, our pard, John Boy is making hits at 800 yards with his 1876.  There  is a thread running elsewhere on this board that discusses PP bullets and the 1876.

I am planning on trying a few PP bullets in my Shiloh just for grins. ;)  May try it in the 1876 if they can be loaded without screwing up the patch.

Sure, you could get hits at 800 yds. w/ a .22 LR if you had a spotter and "walked" the shots onto target.  ;)  The difficulty with LR shooting is repeatability with a load and sight setting in all forms of weather, which is the bugaboo w/ BP. I'll second what Mike Venturino has said for years, that he knows of no man or woman who can shoot a BPCR and hold minute and a half accuracy day in & day out from 100 yds. & farther.

John Boy posts on the Shiloh Forum and he knows what sort of groups some of these fellas are getting at LR w/ PP loads.

Kid: Mine PP's aren't in the league with the better shooters on Shiloh - but I'm working on it!  ;)

Am not really sure about some of them:
250gr PRS at 100yds out of a RVSSBH - shot gun pattern
500gr original Big Lube - 57gr H777 and a H&R ... 600yds:
5 shot group: 2 3/4" x 7" in the 7 ring.  Three of the holes I could almost put a silver dollar over them.  And I had 2 witnesses

Kid, the design of the original 500gr Big Lube base was 0.786" seated in the case ... about 53gr of Black.  So I had to go the H777 route to see how it flew.

That's why Dick re-did the mold for the Mark II
